No Other is perfectly listenable but it's not really my thing... so I suppose it evens out to about a 3? I quite like Silver Raven, the title track, Strength of Strings and The True One. Unfortunately my least favorite song was the 8-minute one so that kind of dragged the album to a halt.

Not sure I have much else to say about it honestly. Just sort of left me feeling ambivalent.

Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock

It's a mixed bag. This album isn't sure of what it's trying to be. Is it new wave? African music? Synthpop? Sample-based hip hop? I can't even try to pin it down. I should clarify that there are plenty of albums out there where genres can merge and coexist very well. In the case of Duck Rock, the problem here is that there's no rhyme or reason to the genre choices. It's like emptying the refrigerator and hurling the contents at a wall and hoping some of it sticks. The last song is a particularly dated attempt on novelty country pop; it leaves a rather sour aftertaste.

Personal highlights: "Obatala," "Merengue"
Rating: 2/5 [Mediocre]

Day 16

Holy fuck.

What have I been doing with my life that I haven't listened to this before now? This is exactly what I want out of psychedelic blues rock. A whole side dedicated to an absolute killer rendition of "Who Do You Love?" Yes please! I am now looking for the Pure Pleasure pressing of this as soon as I'm done my vinyl diet. 5 stars.

For some reason it's not letting me post a screenshot from the website, but this is my next album. We'll see how it goes.

I have a vivid memory as a kid of my dad having this on tape and so it used to be in his car rotation the whole time. I can almost still picture to the smallest detail being in the back of his car in the late 80s and being completely perturbed by the title track which felt really sinister.

I still hate the eagles…

The Eagles have become a meme because of their ubiquity and sustained popularity amongst Boomers combined with The Big Lebowski’s excellent takedown of the band. I think the “I Fuckin’ Hate The Eagles” trope has gotten to the point that the pendulum has now over-corrected. A band that had spent most of my life being hugely overrated are now a little underrated.

The Eagles will never my favorite band and it still boggles the mind that they managed to sell so many records considering how MOR most of their music is but that all being said, I don’t think they are necessarily terrible or unlistenable. They are alright. Their music is well played and recorded and they have released some good singles. I just think it’s become such a trope to hate on the band that it feels like an overreaction at this point and I will openly admit to being one of the people who played up the “I Fucking Hate The Eagles” cliche over the past 20 plus years mainly because they’re a super easy target.

I mean I hated them before it was cool to hate them. My problem with them is they really are a singles band, their albums are full of weak tracks. I want deep tracks that encourage me to listen to the album, I don’t get that with them. I just wish they were deeper.

I also hate that they pretty much single-handedly changed how people think about concert tickets and I very much blame them for the current climate of unmarketable prices.

Well this is interesting, because I remember liking it well enough when it came out and everyone else being all Gaga over it.

I think my feelings on this album can pretty much be summed up by the one two punch of Prom followed by The Weekend.

Prom is just crushing lyrically. It’s an inventive sounding song, too, that is performed by a very capable singer.

The Weekend is everything about some pop music that I don’t like. It is overwrought in its current sound landscape and the lyrics are a worldview that is not only foreign to me but also somewhat repugnant. It’s also sung by a singer wanting to sound current and full of runs that don’t elevate the music.

I’m gonna give it another listen but I fully like half the album and fully hate the other half. At least it isn’t the snore fest that I think SOS is.

I was glad to get this one because it's long been on my list to fully listen to and I've never gotten around to giving it a full listen before today. I'm having a hard time deciding what I think about it though. It strikes me as an album I'll need to listen to a couple times to sort out my thoughts. I definitely don't care for it as much as I do the stuff with VU. On first listen I'm at 2/5. But my appreciation may go up after spending more time with it.
