Erykah Badu - Mama's Gun

220px-Erykah_Badu_-_Mama%27s_Gun.jpg

You may have seen my relevant post in the Rank The Albums! thread, where I ranked Mama's Gun as my least favorite Badu LP. My opinion hasn't changed. It's merely just OK for neo-soul, which is too bad since I have Baduizm as one of my top50 all time. The slow pace of the second half of the record drags this down too much, although the short stretch from "My Life" to "Cleva" elevates it a smidge. I don't find "Bag Lady" to be an enticing single.

Personal highlights: "My Life," "...& On," "Time's a Wastin"
Rating: 2.5/5 [Decent]

More like NOOOOOOOOOO amirite?

Growing up listening to mostly hip hop I always thought Prog was the polar opposite, hip hop was made by kids for kids and prog was for adults by adults! One was kids that didn't know what they were doing, couldn't play instruments and just found ways to make it work vs professional musicians that could play their asses off! Things eventually evolved and producers in hip hop got better and better which elevated the genre. I can appreciate Prog I just can't get into it because it's too perfect and I'd much rather hear something a little more sloppy and scatterbrained but this is a fine record.

Feels like they took every idea they had and put it on record, lots of interesting parts that would make cool like 3 minute songs that they instead string together to make 18 minute songs!

I'd rate this like maybe 3/5 because it's a very well crafted record but probably wouldn't listen to it again

Out in the west Texas town of El Paso Gap fell in love with a Country album?
It's not as strange as it sounds...

I do like this album quite a bit. Marty Robbins has a great voice and the instrumental backing compliments him very well. The goofy album cover undersells how morbid this thing is; someone dies in almost every song. It's awesome. Also this has to be one of the first ever concept albums right? Although I guess In the Wee Small Hours predates this by a few years. Still, impressive that this actually sounds like a cohesive set of songs.

I'll probably give this one a 4. See, I don't hate country!

My favorites are Big Iron, Cool Water, They're Hanging Me Tonight, The Master's Call (this one especially) and Running Gun

Right on!

Day 15, a day late...

Day 0015.jpeg

Another one of my mom's all-time favourites, and an album I've known to be beloved by many for a very long time.
This morning was my first time listening and I can see what the fuss is all about. A great way to start the day - good voice, good vibes, good times! I wouldn't be surprised if my rating goes up on this with some revisiting, but for this go a solid 4/5.
