kinda like my ac/dc listen earlier, skynyrd are one of those bands that you know what you're getting and that there isn't going to be a whole lot of depth to their records. their hits are hits for a reason and you aren't going to hear too many people stan their deep cuts. on this record skynyrd, at least compared to ac/dc, present a wider palette in their songs. this album's radio staples include the ballads simple man and tuesday's gone, the rocker gimme three steps, and the ballad AND rocker free bird. the other songs filling out this album are fine and generally in line with the feel of the rest of the record, but obviously don't stand out in any meaningful way. last thought: for as over-familiar as i am with free bird and don't ever feel a craving to listen to it, whenever i do listen to it i am /in/ to it, and it becomes a reminder for why it's so ubiquitous. it's like stairway to heaven in that way- it's just a song that once it is playing, i can't help but feel and understand why it is one of the most popular classic rock songs ever.

This album kicks ass. I will stan for it every day of the week.

curious- do you guys think any of the tracks that aren't listed in my post (things going on, mississippi kid, poison whiskey) stand out in any way or that you rate higher than the other, radio-known tracks on the album? if so, why? poison whiskey seemed the only one to me that would grab any attention.

this is a solid record, if i didn't make that clear. and very likely the only essential studio skynyrd record if just for free bird. i think only second helping could make a case for also being essential. but a hits compilation seems like the 'most' essential skynyrd.

edit: realized i didn't mention i ain't the one in my earlier post- that's a hits staple, too.

Live at the Regal is pretty great and serves as a lasting document of B.B. King being the fantastic entertainer and musical trailblazer that he was. It's a very charismatic record and, like many great live albums, does its best to try and simulate the experience of being right there in the audience. The inclusion of the banter with the crowd and their reactions really helps to sell the infectious atmosphere. Very much enjoyed it!

man, i'd forgotten how much of a straight up head bopper this album is. and in 2023 it's somewhat amusing to hear cube demand 'drop an old school beat!'. what's not amusing in 2023 is a lot of the material on this record that's considered problematic in today's world. it was problematic in 1990, too, and ice cube knew it, and that defiance is no doubt a big part of what sold this album at the time- amerikkka wasn't ready to hear the absolute realities he was putting out there, but *clutches pearls* the vulgarity!, and the profanity!, is ultimately what got more ears to at least hear about what really was going on in ice cube's world. one would hope listeners hearing tom brokaw say on this record "outside the south central area, few care about the violence because it doesn't affect them" would get the hint, but if the last 30 years - hell, even the last three - have shown us anything, it is that there's still a whole lot of amerikkkans who will fight tooth and nail to maintain their willful ignorance.

Supergrass - In It for the Money

First time listening. It's fine. It may just be that Britpop rubs me the wrong way. I don't deny that it's well-performed.
Lead vocalist Gaz Coombes sounds like Billy Corgan at times, especially on "Richard III." The track "Late in the Day" stood out most.

Personal highlights: "Late in the Day," "G-Song"
Rating: 2.5/5 [Decent]

I miss angry young Cube.

That was one I recently revisited and it is stellar on a 2nd/3rd listen. The title track and In It For the Money are big time bangers that get stuck in my head frequently now.
