Should we do a group project

When I was young and getting into music I asked my mom (who graduated high school in 1976) if she like the Beatles when she was younger. She told me she preferred The Monkees. That was a sobering moment, even as a pre-teen I knew that was the wrong answer to that question.
Yeah my mom loved the Beatles until their music got "weird." Then she started liking the Monkees, and Herman's Hermits, etc that mimicked the early Beatles.

Had mine paused for a couple days, but here's my listen for tonight. Finally another one I don't own which may be surprising. But I never picked it up because though I've heard it, I don't know it all too well so I'm excited to change that. I love 'The Perfect Prescription,' as well as all of Spiritualized catalog, so I'll usually turn to those:

Did she know they didn't even write their own songs? Or play their own instruments? I'm sure she knew that wasn't even Michael Nesmiths' hat, right? Right? I can't say anything, my mom liked The Dave Clark Five!

It’s genuinely surprising that you don’t own this album.

Day 19 - This was actually yesterday's but I'm working to get caught up!

Day 0019.jpeg

I listened to this in the truck at work today. Twice. I very rarely listen to the same album back to back and it's even more rare for me to do so at work, but this was another one of those "what the fuck have I been doing with my life?!" moments! Certainly, I've long been aware of The Pogues legacy and them being loved by many musicians and friends that I dig, but I've never done the dive before today. Foolishness! This is my second favourite discovery of the project so far.

"The Wild Cats of Kilkenny" is stone-cold brilliant. A 6 out of 5 surrounded by 4s and 5s. Their covers of "Dirty Old Town" and "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" are equally incredible, but truly there's nary a misstep on this album. The A-Side is staked with MacGowan originals while the B-Side is just stacked!

Turns out the version I played twice is the extended 2005 reissue, which included a pair of "Dirty Old Town" B-Sides bookending the four songs released on the wonderfully titled Poguetry in Motion EP - even these were strong songs with "Body of an American" and "Rainy Night in Soho" being particular standouts.

This one will be getting lots of play for a while now, and is going on my vinyl wantlist pronto! 5/5

I like to play this one on St Patty's day! Also check out 'If I Should Fall From Grace With God.'

Day 20

Day 0020.jpeg

Another unfamiliar one. I've never really known the difference between Deerhunter, Deerhoof and Deer Tick, and have probably confused one for another along the way when their names do come up, which seems to be frequently enough. I'm midway through my second listen of the evening on this one, and while I'm enjoying it a bit more than the first time it's still not doing a whole heck of a lot for me. But that seems to happen with a lot of Indie darlings for me - it's part of why I just avoided so many for so long, but I've been pushing myself to dig a little deeper and have found some gems along the way - but this one just isn't for me. I'd give it a 2/5, but wouldn't not listen to it again

I forget exactly why, but I listened to this for the first time in forever the other day and I still love it.

FYI - Deerhoof makes avant garde music and Deer Tick is more americana leaning.

One other thing, the only reason I know and own this album (CD) is because it was recommended to me by the owner of my local way back when it came out. He also convinced me to pick up The National's High Violet around the same time. A secret santa gave me a copy of that for Christmas that year. I think my brother ended up with that copy.

The Police -
Synchronicity
220px-Police-album-synchronicity.jpg

First time listening. I recognized many more tracks than expected...I guess I've heard "King of Pain" and "Synchronicity II" several times in my youth, not knowing that Sting's group was behind those tracks.
The last half of the album backloads this record, with "Synchronicity II" to "Tea in the Sahara" all having varying levels of enjoyment of good to excellent. Not to say that Side A doesn't have any merit, as I enjoyed "Walking in Your Footsteps" and especially "Mother" for its musical discordance and absurdity of going against what I thought Sting's musicianship was capable of. If black midi made it, not a single zoomer would be complaining. Someone should ask or suggest 'em to cover that track, they did cover "Roxanne" after all!
I had a fun time with this one. Will be worth a few revisits. I might even bump higher in time, although it is not a masterpiece.

Personal highlights: "Mother," "Synchronicity II," "Wrapped Around Your Finger"
Rating: 3.5/5 [Great]

Day 21 - getting back ahead of the curve!

Day 0021.jpeg

Yes! This was the first Everything But The Girl album I ever listened to and I still absolutely love it through and through. I don't even recall why I chose to play it in the back at work back in my HMV days, but on a whim I did and I've been glad ever since. Extra nice to have this one come up now as their latest single was by far my most listened-to song of January, and I still can't get enough.

The opening trio of songs wins me over and draws me right in. "Wrong" and "Single" are probably my two favourite songs on the album. The only stumble for me is "The Heart Remains a Child" - I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. Makes the album more of a 4.5 for me than an outright 5.

I remember buying it because the Missing single was a thing. I was kind of happy it wasn't on this. Love this album so much.

Thoughts on The Monkees:
First and last songs, going by the original tracklisting I couldn't mess with a deluxe version, are the best Beatles impressions on this, some filler in the middle, Davy Jones tunes are not good, there's a couple of tunes that have Grateful Dead vibes, like not live Dead but an album track that's like good but wait until you hear it live! The Del sample was a surprise! Probably a 2/5 but wouldn't be mad at the two tracks I liked showing up in the right playlist.

Their television show was flawless...

Isn’t that soundtrack to their movie?
