April 19 - Working, but Poor. Play an album about being poor and/or working class.

Make good money, five dollars a day
If I made any more I might move away

Lotta poor man got the Cumberland Blues
He can't win for losing
Lotta poor man got to walk the line
Just to pay his union dues

Billy Joe Shaver - Salt Of The Earth

This album is about as blue collar as they come, some song titles include; “Hardworkin’ Man”, “Manual Labor”, and “Street Walkin’ Woman” even the songs with less overt titles still mainly address the day-to-day lives of those just scraping by.

April 16 - College. Play an album that you either first heard on a college radio station, or that you think all college students should be forced to listen to today.

Redman "Whut? Thee Album" - CKLN 88.1FM will always have a special place in my heart! Not only was it an amazing college radio station but it played a huge part in my musical education especially when it came to hip hop.

They had an amazing Saturday afternoon show called The Powermove Show that was an institution in the city! Me and my friends would pop a cassette into the deck hit play/record and go out and get into whatever trying to time it just right so you got back in 45 minutes to flip the tape and continue recording!

You'd bring the tape to school on Monday and blast it on the boombox, someone always seemed to show up with a boombox, you'd analyze each song, try to figure out the name and who performed it with very little help, this was pre internet afterall! It was so much fun!

Anyways, one Saturday afternoon I caught the world premiere of the new Redman song "Tonight's Da Night", I had no idea who Redman was but I was excited! What made it even better is the DJ gave out a warning about explicit lyrics, he basically said "this has some explicit lyrics so if your too young to listen just go into the other room and listen on headphones or turn it down real low!". Then they played the song and GODDAMN!!! That shit hit hard, I had no idea who this guy was but I wanted more! I made it my mission to hunt this album down, I mean it wasn't out and I had no idea when it was coming out but I looked for it every chance I could!

When it finally dropped I bought it right away went over to the homies house and we must have played it like 20 times that night! I still love this album and miss the Powermove show!! This is the only tape I have of the show left and it's hanging on for dear life! Anyways all that is to say that everyone that's ever been to college, heard of college or seen the word college written down should listen to Redman!!

April 18 - Hangovers. Play an album about alcohol, poor choices, or regrets.

Amythyst Kiah – Wary + Strange

This one's got some "Hangover Blues" in addition to some heavy regrets and appearances by alcohol (see especially the empty bottle of Wild Turkey on the car seat in the song about her mother's suicide that shares its name with the whiskey.)

Frightened Rabbit "The Winter of Mixed Drinks" - Always a lot to unpack when it comes to this band, regret, poor choices and a lot of mixed drinks later you see some optimism through your hangover!

April 19 - Working, but Poor. Play an album about being poor and/or working class.

Jethro Tull - A
Features the song Working John, Working Joe:
When I was a young man (as all good tales begin)
I was taught to hold out my hand
And for my pay I worked an honest day
and took what pittance I could win
Now I'm a working John and I'm a working Joe
and I'm doing what I know
for God and the Economy
Big brother watches over me
And the state protects and feeds me
And my conscience never leaves me
And I'm loyal to the unions
who protect me at all levels
And as I grew, the winds of fortune blew
and the bank smiled down upon me
And mortgaged to the hilt I threw
the breeze of caution behind me
Now I'm a working John and I'm a working Joe
and I'm good at what I know
And God and the Economy
have blessed me with equality
Now I'm equal to the best of you
And better than the rest of you
who would criticise my success
in times of national unrest
Now I own my horseless carriage
in its central-heated garage
And I commute eighty miles a day ---
up at seven to make it pay
I direct ten limited companies
with seeming consummate expertise
two ulcers and a heart disease
a trembling feeling in both knees ---
I'm a working John and I'm a working Joe
