The April 2023 Record Spin Challenge: "Want to go around again? I do."

The line "Fuck this acid trip, I need to come down." rings so true. I can't do that stuff anymore....

One of my favourite things ever heard during a particularly psychedelic festival was a friend of ours walking by a few of us who were hanging out and having a laugh, making no effort to stop he just said to us as he walked by, "I've taken too much acid, I need to go eat some mushrooms to calm down!"

April 24 - Gateway Drugs: LSD. Play an album that is schizophrenic, that is about taking acid, or that was made by a fan of the rainbow road

The Flaming Lips "The Soft Bulletin" - these seems like the right choice for today, they remind me of a guy in highschool that said he doesn't do acid...but he can make it...

Good choice based on the album artwork too. the photo was taken during one of Neal Cassady's early 'acid tests' with the merry pranksters.

April 25 - You had to grow up. Play an album that feels like a mature statement by a musician who has developed and matured as they got older.

Some artists enjoy an incredibly accelerated growth...

1981 lyric...
Gary got a boner
'Cause Gary's got a boner
Gary's got a boner
Gary's got a boner no, no, oh, oh, oh

1985 lyric...
The ones love us best are the ones we'll lay to rest
And visit their graves on holidays at best
The ones love us least are the ones we'll die to please
If it's any consolation, I don't begin to understand them

The National "I Am Easy to Find" - from angry young men to sad dad's.... I'm still looking forward to their new one even if I prefer their older stuff...

Jason could always write a song. But from the kickoff of "Cover Me Up" it's clear that he elevated his game with this album, focusing on the craft of being singer / songwriter, and being a good human.

This was my drug of choice when I did these things. Working 80 hour weeks and taking a vacation day trip on Sundays wandering around Boulder and Denver. I didn't know this band then, but they're incredible and more people need them on their radar.

Liquid Sound Company - Acid Music for Acid People

It's one of my white whales, so I've got to stream this one on Bandcamp instead.

We’ve come close to losing Jason Pierce due his battle with addiction but thankfully he’s managed to pull through. Here’s hope he can avoid becoming another casualty and keep making celebratory and life affirming music for years to come.

Radiohead - Kid A

My Freshman year of college I lived off campus in a shitty basement apartment. When we weren’t at school, working very part-time jobs, or ditching both to instead play multiple rounds of disc golf; we were likely drinking, smoking weed, or tripping balls. Are good friend was a drug dealer and always had plenty of LSD and we took full advantage. Many nights were spent watching The Matrix and/or listening to Kid A as I melted into your bright red velvet thrift store sofa. Kid A is the perfect album to trip to, it sill giving me mini flashbacks every time the first eerie synth of “Everything In It’s Right Place” starts to rumble from the speakers.

It's no secret that I'm a huge Rateliff fan...this album and Tearing at the Seams are his very best in my opinion. And this one hits on so many levels, as he deals with and writes about love, loss and grieving.

If I had read ahead first, I might have saved this for Friday but I'm more than halfway through the first side now, so here we go!

April 26 - Getting married. Play an album that you'd want to play at your wedding if you ever get married or if you were to go back and get married all over again.

Totally lucked out on my wife. Huge overachievement. I must have unknowingly had some magic beans or something. Still have no idea why she's still around 39 years later.

Even though this is from the middle of his output, it plays like a significant maturation from his earlier work and still strikes me as the most developed album, musically, that Beck has put out.

Our wedding song (back in '92) was Garth Brooks ~ Shameless. We've both agreed that it wasn't the best choice in retrospect. I think if we were to renew our vows, we'd use Peter Gabriels version of the Book of Love, we both key in on the lyrics when we hear it and it's an absolutely lovely cover.

The book of love has music in it
In fact that's where music comes from
Some of it's just transcendental
Some of it's just really dumb

But I
I love it when you sing to me
And you
You can sing me anything

Wilco - Sky Blue Sky

After creating arguable one of the most innovative and brilliant albums of my lifetime with Yankee Hotel Foxtrot and following that up with the even more dissonant A Ghost Is Born the band seemingly played it safe with their next release, this record, Sky Blue Sky. This album was initially a disappointment to me and likely many other fans who had gotten used to Wilco pushing boundaries with each successive release. It wasn’t until I stopped comparing it to what came before and learned to enjoy it for what it was, an excellent albeit low key rock album made by a band of middle-aged dads. I also feel like this was the album that cemented the bands status as the poster boys for the greying former hipster Millennial “Dad Rock” band. Still excellent but in a mellower, more grown-up sort of way.

R.E.M. "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" (1996 Warner Brothers; 2021 Craft reissue)
R.E.M. is a band that kept growing from album to album. They probably reached full maturity with "Automatic For The People" but this album is the one that in my opinion shows their full breadth, incorporating elements from their previous records along with a level of experimentation. It aged incredibly well too.

Talking Heads - Speaking In Tongues

I would be fine with this whole album being spun at our wedding because it’s full of bangers but “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” would be our first dance as it is a song that means a lot to both of us and we will occasionally even yell “LOVE ME TILL MY HEART STOPS!!” to which the other will shout back “LOVE ME TILL I’M DEAD!!”
