The Beatles

I'm thinking about grabbing a MoFi Magical Mystery Tour, but the reviews on Cogs regarding the last three tracks on Side B are making me hesitate. For anyone here who has one, what are your thoughts?

@Joe Mac has that for sure. I have the mono.

I have both that and the mono. It’s a really nice master and I don’t remember any issues with the last three tracks on my one. I do prefer the mono mix though.
I have an 84 UK press, the MoFi and Mono versions and I also like the mono best. That said, the others sound really good and as @Joe Mac, I didn't hear any issues with the last 3 tracks.

Were the reviews referencing "fake stereo" on those tracks? I remember looking at this not long ago and everyone kept saying that on Cogs and Hoffman.

Fake stereo? I don’t even what to know what they mean by that 😂
Electronically processed mono. Simulated stereo. Capitol called it Duophonic in the US. I guess “Craptastic” was rejected by the advertising department. 😂

The only MMT with true stereo on all tracks was the German Apple/Horzu catalog number SHZE 327 which was pressed 5 times between 1971-76.

It’s supposed to be the best sounding MMT.

I didn’t need to know this.

I heard the Mofi last week and side one literally brought tears to my eyes. Side two also did, but they were the bitter tears of raging disappointment. Those fake stereo tracks do not sound good at all.
That being said, eight of the eleven songs sounded so good that I considered getting it, but only if I could find it for cheap.

HiFi Guy is correct about the German issue being outstanding. I have it and it is truly worth seeking out. The bass on Baby You’re A Rich Man is beyond spectacular. Truly jaw dropping in its depth and power. Bass should sound like that on all records.

Man, shame about the weird K-Tel looking cover art on those.

Just be sure to get the 1973 issue that is true stereo. 👍
So wait, all 5 of those pressings between 71 and 76 aren't true stereo? Only 73?

(Glancing through cogs it appears as @HiFi Guy mentioned it is all of them... that makes it a bit easier... because random cogs reviews have NEVER steered me wrong)

Cogs shows some to be re-channeled mono and others to be true stereo. Just listened to my 1981 German repressing 1 C 0620-04 449 and it is magnificent too with side two sounding even better than side one, imo.

Geez, I would hope Mobile Fidelity wouldn't use the fake stereo tapes for this. Side two will tell.

I think they just used whatever tapes Parlophone decided they were willing to give up, they won’t have had that much of a say in the matter. They couldn’t even get them back when the metalwork for With The Beatles broke, which is why that one is like hens teeth.

Spinning mine now, so far sounds good. Will let You know if my opinion changes on side 2.

Update - on my modest system, to my even more modest ears, this sounds great. I honestly couldn't notice a difference between side 1 and the dreaded last three songs on side 2. Again, I'm no audiophile but I would recommend tracking this down if at all interested.

I am interested, but based on the raves, I may be more interested in the German HorZu pressing. Need to do some mulling.
