The Blue Note Thread

They are so consistently great that it bends you appreciation of music in terms of sound, quality, physical presentation.... and then you start dipping into the adjacent Speakers Corner, Pure Pleasure, MPS -- they give and give and give.
It's true. Almost like there's no end, and kind of easy to lose site of what a great time this is for acquiring audiophile jazz--especially when you can pick them up through sales!

Did Blakey’s drums on Witch Doctor always sound this distorted? I know he plays real fucking hard sometimes and distorts the mic. I’ve never really listened to the album before now.

Maybe it's because he isn't one of the "cool cats" that are usually hyped around the internet, but I haven't seen any talk about the upcoming album by guitarist Julian Lage. If you're not familiar with his work I recommend checking out his playing on the Charles Lloyd record from last year, or any of the videos I'm sharing here. He's definitely a virtuoso and sounds like no other guitar player I've heard, mixing jazz with blues, country, rock and alternative music, and with an approach to the instrument that is often reminiscent of a pianist.

Anyway, I'm really excited for this new album, and you can order a signed colored copy on the Blue Note store for $23, so I think it is well worth the gamble even if you're not familiar with his music.

Full album is out on streaming. Been listening to it all weekend. The bluesy/country swingers really get me shaking.

This is great! I'm only a few songs in but I absolutely love it.

I listen to and trust the voices here, and still I am WOWed by Katanga!—thank you for motivating me to spin it! What amazing performances, and oh my, the sound. The liner notes on the insert really drive home the craziness of how unique this recording is for capturing these particular players, and how/why it is that they range from little known to completely obscure. Every instrument excels, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that Wilson’s piano really rings the bell for me. (Next spin it’ll be Bolton’s trumpet, no, Amy’s sax, no....) Tone Poet rules.

Don't have it and don't know if I'll be able to get it any time soon, but I was absolutely floored when I streamed it last week based on the general excitement around here, and I can well imagine just how much better it sounds and how much nicer having the tactility of the LP and liner notes is for the experience - but at the very least I'm glad to have been put on to the album. It's dynamite!

Seriously, the piano work near the end of "Native Land" sends chills down my back. What a monster of an album.

And to think, I almost passed on Katanga! entirely but figured "What the hell, at least the cover kind of goes along with Blakey's The Witch Doctor and the copy of Drum Suite I already own." But I'd say this is an even better album than The Witch Doctor. Every musician is firing on all cylinders on every track. Just an incredible lightning-in-a-bottle recording and a strong contender for my favorite Tone Poet in my collection.

I love music, and I love jazz. It's why I'm here after all. But it's rare for an album to move me the way this one has. I feel it, man. I feel it.
