The Blue Note Thread

Nooooo my Target Live at the Lighthouse order got canceled. Damn I am disappointed!

Another cancellation here. Pretty annoyed after coninously approving those delays.

I just placed my order through Udiscover with my 30% VIP coupon, not too much more..

Edit: So ended up being for the best. I contacted Target support and they replaced the order and adjusted the price 33%, plus it automatically put my Target Circle 5% birthday discount (that I didnt know existed) towards it.
So it's now reordered, without me having to approve delays ever few days for $206 shipped. And I cancelled my Udiscover order.

Just a collective thanks to those of you who talked up Katanga! so much. I was going to skip it bc I'm buying too many records, but I didn't thanks to discussion here and the Audiophile board.

I'm blown away by the music and sound. This is the essence of the Tone Poet series. A true gem resurrected in pristine format.

Still in stock on Amz btw, $27 fps. BN Release of the year for me so far.

Oh neat, I’m going to contact support and see how that goes. Will update!

So who has the new Cool Struttin' and Back at the Chicken Shack BN Classics? Mine arrive tomorrow. Discogs reviews say Cool Struttin is pressed perfectly. While Chicken Shack a few folks have said those micro hairline scratches are present again, and quite a bit of non fill.

I will be ordering Cool Struttin' next week if it stays in stock. I have a vintage copy of Jimmy I'm happy enough with.

Mine have arrived but I’m away for the weekend so won’t get chance to spin until Sunday evening.

I got the Sonny Clark & it looks good, but haven't been able to play it yet. It does have the same poly lined sleeve but no scratches. I don't think the scratches have a affected anyone in Europe, although I have had other issues with some in the series.

I just got my copy of Katanga today and it is NOT in a gatefold album cover! WTH?! It’s in a conventional cover with an insert of notes. Not feeling happy about that given the premium price and the standard set by the other Tone Poet releases.

Is my copy an anomaly or is this the new standard? Wanted to check before I play the album or return for an exchange.

there are a few Tone Poets like that. The Prisoner, The Phantom, Mr. Shing-A-Ling, and New Bottle Old Wine are in single glossy tip-on jackets. It doesn’t bother me, in fact it’s more like the original release to be non-gatefold - but most are in a gatefold

Seriously - you're going to return a record (which contributes to high prices for everyone else) because there is no gatefold, which was known by pretty much everyone? The Tone Poet series uses photos in a gatefold ONLY when photos are available. That means pretty much pre- 1969 Blue Note recordings only (although not all) and none of the Pacific Jazz catalog, as Katanga comes from.

What do you want, as the session was not photographed?

Thanks - I was surprised by it as I have purchased 17 other Tone Poets and they were all in gatefolds. Even online, many of the descriptions accompanying this record for purchase say that it has a gatefold; a few do say otherwise.

Now I can dial back down my suspicion meter and get back to playing great jazz. I appreciate the prompt responses.

I won't bust your balls, but just say original copies are rare and expensive if/when you can find one. You got a very good deal and pressing here now (better than the Mosaic Select digital IMO). If you want some sticker shock, go shopping for first pressing deep groove jazz one day if its not already in Japan forever.

Here is some more info on Amy and Dupree that you might enjoy reading. Enjoy!

Thanks for the info. The new pressing I purchased today is excellent, as I would expect from this series. I probably would not have been in the market for it had it not been for this reissue. I’ll read up on this additional material.

Angst - “a feeling of persistent worry about something trivial.” Not the only definition, but if the shoe fits…
