The Blue Note Thread

Many, many skipping grooves. Made it to about halfway through the second cut on side B and pulled the plug - I mean, lifted the arm!
Wow. Haven't experienced this. I had one area towards the end of side b.
It was a pressing defect that went away after a few spins deburred something.
Otherwise this one sounded good.

I had the same experience as you. Mine didn’t skip or jump so was a bit surprised when many people had so many issues with it!

That’s completely possible. There is a review that says the guy calibrated his table (specifically leveled his table) and the skipping stopped.
Level table, proper anti-skate setup, alignment etc. all make ahuge difference. My Pictures of Heath (not a favorite album anyways) plays perfect.

I'm sure a lot of the online commentators, like on Discogs, haven't even got their turntable level.

I don’t have this album so can’t comment specifically, but, if a decent chunk of people have a bunch of BNC/TPs that play with no problems, and along comes one that causes notable portion of them problems, then something is going on that’s materially different, independent of setup.

Yep, this exactly. Summed it up more eloquently than I could!

I don’t disagree with this, but both can be true. The way it is recorded can show issues if you aren’t dialed in completely. Now should you need a certain level of equipment like being able to play the Telarc 1812 Overture? No. But I have records in my collection that I put on if I think something is off because they will let you know very clearly if something is amiss.

And I totally agree with this! So much in fact, that I went and played it on my StudioDeck with microline stylus, which tracked it MUCH better. Didn't skip once. However - further into the side it went, there was some audible distortion on the louder horn stabs, which honestly I have NEVER heard from the AT VM95ML - that thing is distortion free even on some offending titles with IGD on other carts, so to push the MicroLine into distortion is a pretty impressive feat.

The elliptical on my Grado woodie didn't stand a chance, and I'm sure no anti-skate on the VPI didn't help, either.
