The Blue Note Thread

Hey ya'll. It's been some time since I've checked in. Nice to see this thread still going strong! If anyone is interested in the Connoisseur series from Blue Note, let me know. I can do 20% off the price listed + flat $5 shipping in the US. I have 29 now. Too many to keep. :( Can ship overseas for cost too, just need to calculate it.

Might be interested in the Lee-Way and perhaps the other. Are these pressings comparable to the Classics presses?

I think a bunch of the connoisseur pressings are mastered from analogue. They were released in a few groupings and from what I’ve seen, the first batch was digital and the rest were analogue. I believe these were the digital titles:
Ornette Coleman - The Empty Foxhole
Andrew Hill - Judgment
Bobby Hutcherson - Components
Freddie Redd - The Connection
Wayne Shorter - The All Seeing Eye
Baby Face Willette - Stop And Listen

Generally, people really seem to like the Connoisseur pressings. I think Components is the only one I have though which seems to be a digital transfer (didn’t know that when I bought it in a shop).

What’s your opinion of them?
Are they digitally sourced?

I’m definitely interested in the two Lee Morgan titles.
And possible Ike Quebec.

Building up my Shorter collection...

Adam's Apple is the MM SRX, All Seeing is a first press, Ju Ju is a second press Liberty from '66, and Soothsayer is a Japanese market release that's actually pretty good. I still need a few more but it's looking pretty good...
Also, you should pick up Et Cetera while it’s still around $26.
That album is the cat’s pajamas. 🐈

All of them, you need all of Shorter’s albums. 👌

It’s one of the issues with Connoisseur pressings. Nobody really knows which are digital or analogue sourced. They said that the series eventually became analogue and the first 6 or so I listed above are digital. Not sure how many after that are digital. I only have the Hutcherson one from the first batch which is okay. I have heard that the Ike Quebec is a really good pressing and some others are meant to be nice so I would tend to look at the later ones they released if that helps...

They do have "analog source" stickers on the cover, but I think it was mentioned somewhere that they use an analog source if one was available. I'm not sure how this translates to the stickers. They sound great to me, and The Procrastinator would be my favorite of the three you mentioned. Classic Lee Morgan!

Can I message you in 5 hours when this Wayning Moments auction is over? If I loose it, I will buy both.

And never listened to The Procrastinator, but after looking at the personnel for the album, it moved to the top of my priority list.

Yep, sure thing! It's live in a few spots, but no bids or other messages on these at the moment. Wait until you hear the opener for Procrastinator. It's top notch Morgan!

Sounds lovely, and just to validate my situation—

Kind of hope I lose now. Shipping is $15 from Japan.

Anyone knows if this a good pressing? Is anyone else eyeing it? I wouldn't want us to compete and rise the price for it.

Any Japanese pressing up until something like 1993 will usually be at least good. Japanese pressings of Blue Note Albums were at first pressed by Toshiba (Until 1977), then by King (1977-83) and then by Toshiba (1983 and later) again. Supposedly Toshiba's first go around produced the best sounding records (these records can be often recognized by containing LNJ in their catalog number), followed by King's and then followed by the second wave of Toshiba. I have never done a direct comparison, so can't comment myself. I do own a good number of Japanese pressings and have never been disappointed.

This pressing specifically seems to be of the second Toshiba wave. I would certainly recommend the pressing, if the price is right. If it gets too high, you might as well start thinking about getting a MM pressing. I believe you can still order the new SRX version for $60.

On a side note, I was just looking at auctions from the same guy 😁
