The Blue Note Thread

Anyone knows if this a good pressing? Is anyone else eyeing it? I wouldn't want us to compete and rise the price for it.

Yep, I like the Toshibas. Not quite as good as the Japan Kings, but they're always more affordable. Oddly enough, I believe I sold this exact pressing today on eBay. $42 if that gives you any context for bidding range.

Any Japanese pressing up until something like 1993 will usually be at least good. Japanese pressings of Blue Note Albums were at first pressed by Toshiba (Until 1977), then by King (1977-83) and then by Toshiba (1983 and later) again. Supposedly Toshiba's first go around produced the best sounding records (these records can be often recognized by containing LNJ in their catalog number), followed by King's and then followed by the second wave of Toshiba. I have never done a direct comparison, so can't comment myself. I do own a good number of Japanese pressings and have never been disappointed.

This pressing specifically seems to be of the second Toshiba wave. I would certainly recommend the pressing, if the price is right. If it gets too high, you might as well start thinking about getting a MM pressing. I believe you can still order the new SRX version for $60.

On a side note, I was just looking at auctions from the same guy 😁

Thanks! I'll keep an eye on it and will bid on the last day if the price is still low. If it gets above $40, I'll pass on it. For that price I'd rather pay a bit more and get the SRX pressing.

I have most of the King pressings, with only around 10 missing releases for completion. Most of the collection was obtained in the early 2000s, and the price on eBay then was similar to that today. So they held in value, which probably means there are enough copies to maintain consistent supply.

I also have half the early Toshiba releases and some later Toshiba-EMI releases (of releases not released by King). LJC is trustworthy in terms of sound opinions (the early Toshibas sound best), but if your goal is to go for something resembling completion, go for the Kings first as they offer best value for money.

I have this version of The All Seeing Eye and can confirm that it sounds fantastic. Hope it ends up as good as it’s graded.
Perfect. The listing makes it sound like there’s not a single scratch on it, but for $29 shipped I’ll expect a VG.

Also excited to cross the last Blue Note Shorter release off my list.
All on his birthday coincidentally enough. 😎

Congrats/condolences for winning!
I won!
Used to be listed for $26 Buy It Now with $15 shipping, Id check it every so week or two, so to get it for $5 or so less is pretty legit.

Also only need his first two albums, Introducing Wayne Shorter & Second Genesis, and my 60’s Shorter collection will be complete...I suppose Weather Report is next?

EDIT - My next goal is actually to get all the Jazz Messengers albums with Shorter. No, I don’t have a problem......🤥🤫

I have yet to be able to get into Weather Report. Head Hunters either for some reason.

Jazz Messengers with Shorter is one I'm almost done with myself! I'm already eyeing most of the Mobley discography... I'm technically eyeing fiscal responsibility as well, but the vision there is getting blurry.

Yeah, I find Weather Report to be rather lacking compared to his 60’s work but I can dig it. Only have Heavy Weather and Mysterious Traveller.

Head Hunters
is all about “Chameleon” for me. It doesn’t get any better than that time, so the album suffers from it, imo, but I have grown to love the other two tracks (everyone knows “Watermelon Man.”). But man “Chameleon” should be the Jazz-funk anthem.

...maybe it already is

Okay, so because everyone here keeps talking about their Ebay scores, I decided it was time to check it out for myself. Apparently I got too enthusiastic and hit a temporary bidding wall, because I was bidding on too many things 😅

Won my first auction! A NM King copy of Art Blakey - Moanin for $24. Not too bad 😁 I can definitely see how this is addicting😅

Nice score! I just got outbid on a ton of japan pressings! I let Moanin go because I recently got a copy of it but that's a nice score. Be wary of the japan pressings since a lot are shipped from Japan and are $15+ shipping! That would still be a good deal though.

Yeah, I saw the $15 shipping. I'm hoping to score 1 or 2 more from this same seller, then shipping isn't too bad. And otherwise It's still a pretty good deal, especially with the conversion to euro's.

Edit: wow just saw something shoot up from 26 to 71 in the last second 🤯

Yea. I always plan on trying to get multiples from a Japan order but when I start losing them left and right like on this current batch, I call it quits haha.

Does anyone have any insight on the best book to get in order to learn about Art Blakey's life and career and the Jazz Messengers trajectory in general? I've been eying these two:
Hard Bop Academy Hard Bop Academy: Alan Goldsher, Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers: 0884301952202: Amazon.com: Books

Art Blakey: Jazz Messenger Art Blakey: Jazz Messenger: Leslie Gourse: 9780825672729: Amazon.com: Books

But it's hard to tell which would be better. Has anyone read either? Also, I realize there may be books that don't specifically focus on Art or the Jazz Messengers but may still cover them extensively and maybe I should look into? Perhaps something like these two:
Cookin': Hard Bop and Soul Jazz, 1954-65 (A Michael Neugebauer Book) Cookin': Hard Bop and Soul Jazz, 1954-65 (A Michael Neugebauer Book): Kenny Mathieson: 9781841952390: Amazon.com: Books

The History of Jazz The History of Jazz: Ted Gioia: 9780195399707: Amazon.com: Books
?
To be honest, I'm going to end up with "The History of Jazz" sooner than later anyway, so that suggestion is basically moot. Any insight into these books or others that I haven't mentioned would be very helpful!

Highly recommend The History of Jazz, but there's only a smallish section (4 or 5 pages) about the Jazz Messengers. Great book though.

Adding the other books to my To Read list - Thanks!

Don't forget the Davis quintet with Shorter! Plus all the records he played sideman on. Then you can move on to Weather Report. So close really!

I tried to stop being a completionist for any certain artist a long time ago but it is quite fun to have a goal. Instead I just buy most things that say Blue Note on them haha.

There are quite a few in that auction I'm eyeing, but I'll skip out on that Shorter record! I'm bidding on Cliff Jordan, Larry Young, Curtis Fuller and Hank Mobley...but based on the auctions yesterday, they will all skyrocket in the last 10 seconds. One jumped from $12 to $70 yesterday or something crazy.

I quickly decided not to be a completionist when it comes to jazz, theres just too much out there. What I have done though is to select a musician and stream all their albums, compilations and singles. Its a great way to see musicians sound develop (although it can obviously take weeks to get through all that stuff). So far this year I have listened to John Coltrane (82 albums, 32 compilations - 232 hours worth on comps) and Alice Coltrane (19 albums) fully. Im almost through all of Miles Davis' stuff as well. Lee Morgan is likely to be next. Its really fun.

I think I was looking at the same Mobley (No Room for Squares?). I'll let it go if so.
