The Dark Side; Digital audio equipment recommendations and setup.

There's no such thing as overkill, right? ;)

The Music/Media Server just took a serious turn.

That said, I can't help but sing the praises of PLEX (PLEX Amp) running on a NAS for your digital needs :)

Nice one! I eventually need to get a good system for backing up files and things…

I have my NUC for now that has 4TB I think of space and that has rooncore installed on it. It’s really nice to have a NAS/dedicated system for streaming

Thanks for the input, but my run would be too long I think, over 20', so we're going to air on the side of caution and just scrap that idea. If I remember correctly, I think at one point I tried a set of USB over LAN kits that failed miserably. That said, the reason for my question is because I think, I need to do a little more checking, the Chromecast is dropping here and there and it seems to be getting worse, so I'm looking for an alternative method.

I started looking at the Bluesound Node, seems to be a favorite, but also seems like overkill for how I stream if I'm reading the features correctly. I use Spotify and my Synology server, unless the quality of the streaming is well worth the cost.

Any thoughts on the Bluesound Node, is it worth the scratch? And or other Chromecast replacement/upgrade options for my current situation?
Digging back through this thread since I'm in the market, and am looking for the same thing. Streaming from Plex mostly. I have this issue with my Chromecast Audio as well currently through my Yamaha. I narrowed it down to files at or over 24/96. Even though the Chromecast Audio specs show it can play them, it does drop out occasionally...and drops out much more with anything higher than that.

Did you ever get that HiFiBerry?

Its on the To Do list in the near future, with picking up my new 8 bay NAS we need to re-coop funds a bit, but I'm definitely going to pick up the HiFiBerry.

Love the Chromecast Audio, arguably one of googles best products ever. But, it is getting a little long in the tooth.

I still have one in use as a Roon end point. It can’t handle anything over 96khz. Might be time to look into a WIIM device.

As I mentioned in another thread, I’ll be moving late summer and am eyeing the upcoming Wiim Ultra.

Looking for advice on streaming services. I need bit perfect and ease of use with both Apple and Android devices.

I’d leave the apple if you are using a wiim. It’s over airplay so limited. If you wanted to use it at its fullest you have to get one of the android streamers like the fiio or eversolo that allow you to use the Apple Music app natively on them. You can log onto qobuz either using the wiim app and access its library through that or use through roon with the wiim as an endpoint.

All I really care about is using the phones with an app to select the music. I’ll have the Wimm connected with an Ethernet cable to get the data. Or am I missing something?

Qobuz has no “play” feature - I.e. you can’t control from the Qobuz app. Tidal has play and as far as I know works with all major hardware. So should work with the wiim ultra.

I use BluOS and am fine with the interface with Qobuz. Supposedly the wiim app is comparable to BluOS in layout and ease of use.

To expound on what @Joe Mac was saying above, iTunes won’t work from any of the apps in lossless. You have to airplay it in. You can download the app in a Fiio or eversolo device and use it from the device.

Yup, Apple is the fly in the ointment. Airplay is the only option with a WiiM if you want to play from Apple Music. That said, I don’t notice the difference doing Airplay vs having a stream that is lossless/cd quality
