The Dark Side; Digital audio equipment recommendations and setup.

Where the screen on it comes in handy is when using it to control apps rather than as a visual aid with it being a touchscreen and an android machine. If you’re an album listener like me then picking an album at the screen and then zooming around for 35 minutes plus isn’t teally an imposition. You can also control it form the eversolo app and the screen just be a display.

IRC bluesound do another model with a hard drive in it. It’s more spendy that the standard node.

Edit: Yes, they do, it’s the vault 2i.
I guess I wouldn't hunch down to use a small touch screen to choose an album to listen to when I could just do that from an app on my phone in my chair/couch haha. no touch screen also means much smaller footprint on the rack and you could even hide it.

Screens are cool and all but if I’m streaming, most of the time I’m running around the house not really sitting in the listening chair. Even then, it would be way across the room and really tiny. I think BluOS is great for streaming and I believe you can set it up to a hard drive as a music server if you want but I don’t know about hard drive capabilities in an actual node.
There's no HD in a Node.
But it works great with windows as long as the BS app is loaded on the PC/laptop.
They talk across the home network here.
Just sync some settings that are a little tedious to figure out.🤓

I think @Kris seems to want to avoid needing to have a PC or Laptop on 24/7.

@Kris these are the input options in addition to the internal drive.

These are the streaming services it supports within the app:

The app looks like this. Can choose those sort options from the side bar and view by artist looks like this.

All in all it’s a bit clunky and I think they have stopped updating the app for it since the Aries mini isn’t in production anymore

It's clunky but it's functional.

Yeah, I have this setup already. I miss having the files on the device. Computers are noisy.
I've heard this before but I personally don't experience any noise. The PC is on the other side of the house so it would have to be transported through the LAN. It just doesn't happen unless it's such a minor sound that my ears are not picking up.

Or are you taking about having both devices in the same room?

Yes, across the room so it's right behind my head. It's noisy. It's also the annoyance of having to have it on all day. It's a distraction from work.

@Kris

Not sure how you feel about used gear, but if you're interested in the Aries Mini, Echo Audio is a very reputable used and new gear dealer...

No issue with used at all. There was one floating around for $250. I want to get rid of my extra cd player first.

Looks great and that rack is awesome...who made it?
Thanks. It's an Atacama Evoque 60-40 SE. They only do the SE2 now with the curved sides, but as I'm already a customer they will still make new shelves for me on the older design when needed, which is great as I was able to buy two more at the end of the year.

So far so good. It's warming up and will have a decent listen over the weekend. The main thing is it now opens up possibilities on changing the Node to a better streaming transport in the future.

The small footprint is very handy.

Absolutely my plan in a couple of years is to separate out the DAC and preamp so the small footprint is an absolute must and if it can improve how my streaming and CDs sound then we’re onto a real winner!
