The February 2024 Record Challenge Thread - Silver Screen Edition Part Deux

Thursday February 8th
Meet the Parents

Gaylord Focker - "Jack, I don't know what we're talking about"

I remember being surprised at how much I liked this at first viewing.

Play an album that is in a different language than your own

I've spun this countless times...it just flows so nicely.

Radio DJ - "Here's something new. A local Erie band's got a new record out. Just won the Mercyhurst talent show a few weeks ago. THis is Erie's own OOOOneders!"

It's definitely a special feeling when you hear your own music on the radio for the first time.

Play a debut

Play something that has a lot of different pressings

I'm first in with this one?

Honestly that was the first i thought about as well but then remembered some of the Records originally released in the 60s and 70s have had hundreds of pressings over the years, albeit not in fancy colours

Punch Drunk Love

Play something that stirs up emotion /
Play anything this movie brings to mind

Mondo released Jon Brion's score last year, but I didn't pick it up. Not a huge fan of the movie. But I do love his score for another
Paul Thomas Anderson movie. This combines the songs from Aimee Mann on one LP and his score into 2 separate LP's. The quality of the pressing is another discussion altogether (it's a Rainbo / David Cheppa cut combo...and has a lot of surface noise)

The movie definitely can stir some emotion, too.

Aimee Mann / Jon Brion – Magnolia - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
Mondo – MOND-028, 2018

Cut by David Cheppa
Pressed at Rainbo

Cory Hanson - Western Cum

Punch Drunk Love

Barry - "I Sometimes cry a lot..."

Although the last song they played on 7/9/95 was Box of Rain, the second to last song had lyrics by Robert Hunter, and was the last one Jerry sang lead on.

When the last rose of summer pricks my fingers
And the hot sun chills me to the bone
When I can't hear the song for the singer
And I can't tell my pillow from a stone

I will walk alone by the black muddy river
And sing me a song of my own
I will walk alone by the black muddy river
Sing me a song of my own

Have A Nice Life - deathconsciousness

This one has like a million different variants. I bought one a couple years ago to figure out why it’s got such a huge fandom but I still don’t get it. It’s a very meh record to me

HA! Yeah. I hadn’t ever heard of this one until I got more involved in the vinyl community and it seemed like a record that was very highly regarded and I remember downloading it and thinking the same thing.

It came with this book that I’ve never read, but I’ve seen people insist that the various projects from one of these guys are apparently enhanced significantly by the attached literature. I don’t have time for that

Jon Brion - Meaningless

IMG_6806.jpeg

Jon Brion has created some fantastic soundtracks (including Punch Drunk Love) but surprisingly has only released one record as a solo artist. His unique production style really clicks with me, similar to Blake Mills. Can’t go wrong with anything they’re involved in

Fiona Apple - When The Pawn…
View attachment 194915

Fiona and PT Anderson used to be in a relationship; they also both have an affinity towards Jon Brion, who produced this Fiona Apple album and also scored a few of Anderson’s films.

My brain read that as PT Barnum and without pause I thought, yeah she probably did claim to date a ghost or something.

Whoops, missed this one:

Fountains of Wayne - Out-Of-State Plates

IMG_6807.jpeg

I quickly think of Adam Schlesinger’s (of Fountains of Wayne) titular track when this movie is mentioned. Mike Viola, another power pop legend, was lead vocals on the song but I don’t have any of his stuff.
