The Funhouse - The Punks are all right

I'm not even sure this is exactly the right place to talk about it, but I don't really get all the love for the Replacements. I've listened to their first album a couple of times now and I am a little more than 3/4 the way through the new deluxe Tim (Let it Bleed) thing and it's... okay.

I’m really not a fan of Sorry Ma but everything else is great to amazing for me. Let It Be is generally considered their defining album. If you don’t like that, you might like the later, more alt rock focused album of PTMM. If you don’t like either of those then they’re not for you! My wife can’t stand how they sound. Thinks they sound like a drunk bar band (not entirely wrong).
Yeah, Let it Be, Tim, Pleased to Meet Me are the main 3. If you don't like those then... it's okay. I also feel like it's helpful to get into The Replacements at a time in your life when the lyrics can resonate a little more. They were a huge band during college for me, but I don't think they'd have the same effect if I listened to them now.

I love pretty much everything they've done but I'm not the biggest fan of All Shook Down. Sorry Ma is awesome, so sloppy but fast. They were trying to sound like Husker Du a little bit since they were around at the same time in Minnesota. Slowly but surely The Replacements turn into an Alt Rock band. The transition from album to album is great to see because of Paul Westerberg's songwriting. They had "If Only You Were Lonely" as a throwaway/b-side from the first album which shows how good Paul was from early on. They would never stay Punk for too long with tunes like that.

I had a chance to buy Tim from a friend, I listened to it through and only like a few songs.
However, I do love Let It Be and Pleased to Meet Me.

Side story: after their show in Allentown (we were in attendance), Paul & Tommy came to our apartment for an after-party.
I had to kick Tommy out of my bedroom, he was snogging with a lady friend of mine. Paul taught my roommate some guitar tunings. I don't remember much else.

Here's a low-fi recording from that night:

On track 14, the "Freebird" bit was prompted by my drunk friends yelling Free Bird! as we were wont to do at punk shows.

The taper, "teddy ballgame," is a friend of mine and we are still in touch.

Tim was one of the those “what could have been” albums. It was so uninspiring sounding and just felt like such a let down, like Candy Apple Grey. “See, this is what happens with you go major label!!” I like the new version a lot but still sits behind Let It Be and Pleased to Meet Me.

I always felt that if Tim had "Can't Hardly Wait" either the electric or actual version, which they were playing/recording around the same time instead of "Lay it Down Clown" AND "Nowhere is My Home" which is another outtake that never made the album, instead of "Dose of Thunder" it would be my favorite album of all time and The Replacements magnum opus. Those two tracks, which aren't outright horrible, but clearly the weak points bring it down a little bit IMO.

They announced a ton of them and more to come in 2024. I saw them in Tacoma (2x) in July and it was stellar. Got to meet 3/4 of them and a bunch of other awesome stories. Where do you live?
That's awesome! I had a friend that hit one of those Tacoma shows, and said it was a blast. I'm in the greater Boston area. I will wait patiently for something in the North East.

Someone’s been purchasing more punk:

Why just one copy???

Jk this is completely unnecessary and reason number 1034 why Im always broke 😂

edit: ones a fairly worn reissue from 78 that I grabbed rom a flea market many years ago. I needed a better sounding copy so I picked up up the 2011 reissue which sounds fantastic. Recently bought the mono version out of curiosity and also because I really enjoy listening to the Ramones. So in some ways it was all very necessary.

You are not alone! You cannot have enough Ramones, especially variants of the first album. I like the mono one Rhino just put out. I just grabbed a new copy of Mondo Bizarro on vinyl from Europe.
I am that person- suspect you may be too--the RSD Ramones releases are targeted for.

Hoping for a reissue of Acid Eaters. Saw one in the wild a few years ago and didn’t grab it. Bad move.
