The Funhouse - The Punks are all right

The Undertones in the generator thread for Tuesday!

So that scream record is great. i don´t know if that´s still punk because it´s got rock, reggae, campfre songs, but wow, what a return

I must admit I look forward to reading the P4K Sunday reviews. They are often not well written and try way to hard to rewrite musical history, but are great for reminding of interesting albums that I probably haven't listened to in years, the Au Pairs being one of them.

I mean it’s always interesting if nothing else.

I do really like this album though!

um... is Pere Ubu what happens when punks take Quaaludes?
First get some stoner reggae dudes, give them some dub albums and just…too much hash.

Next, give them some art school but not too much. You want them understanding dada but not like, writing papers about it.

One of them has to be really smart and one has to be both impatient and short tempered

Give them enough newspapers and coffee to make them political

Do this in a thatcher economy, congrats you have Pere ubu (in a Reagan economy you get Bad Brains unless you skip the hash/reggae step, in which case you get Dead Kennedys)

I finally got around to reading this. It’s actually pretty good and gave me a lot of perspective on the album.

I really like the album, too by the way. Fairly certain the anthology I have been listening to will top my listens this week. The first half of that is this album.

Highest recommendation for anyone wanting the missing link between The Stooges and Discharge (?!): Blast - Dammned Flame/Hope 7" (not to be confused with BL'AST from SST etc)

This got a reissue about ten years ago, and goes for a decent amount of money. Really wild to hear something like this was recorded in 1972.

General Speech has a limited amount of copies, I'd jump on it sooner than later. This rules

Distro description:

Legendary Belgian 7” from 1973. Bursting out of the post-hippie era with a style no one had heard yet. Some collectors have said this sounds like accidental hardcore, and the drums do bear a similarity to Discharge, but really this is just awesome, fast, and totally unique proto punk channeling the raw sounds of the Stooges and the filthiest rock that slipped through the cracks of the psychedelic 60s. This was reissued about a decade ago, with even those reissues fetching high prices, this issue is very welcome, and comes with an expanded insert of photos and liner notes. Highly Recommended!

Cool. Glad you gave a shout out to BL'AST as well

This randomly saw a vinyl release earlier this year. Weirdo lo-fi fun.

I bought a copy from somewhere else but this one popped up first and had a little blurb about the album:

Another instant buy and highest recommendation I can give. A live LP from Japanese hardcore legends THE COMES. A bit pricey but worth every penny. Normally I wouldn't say a live record is a great entry way for any band, but this is. Though below video is from their legendary record NO SIDE. Not sure who might be distroing this in Europe/UK

The Comes - Ballroom of The Living Dead LP

US Distro: Comes, The ‎- Ballroom Of The Living Dead NEW LP
Japan: BALLROOM OF THE LIVING DEAD(LP+BOOKLET)/COMES|PUNK|ディスクユニオン・オンラインショップ|diskunion.net

(Write up is translated, not sure if it was provided by the label, or BASE record shop in Tokyo, who are also distro-ing)

"The COMES" was one of the representative bands of Japan's HARDCORE PUNK in the early 1980s.The vocal style of "CHITOSE", the first female vocalist in Japan for a HARDCORE PUNK band, and the hasty and aggressive sound made a strong impact from the beginning. Now, 40 years later, he has gained followers all over the world and truly gained worldwide recognition.

The first stage of the group was completed after a little less than two years of activity, from their live debut on June 16, 1982 to their live performance on March 24, 1984. After that, the second season started after a member change. This work features valuable live recordings from the first period, as well as interviews with MINORU (bass) and MATSUMURA (drums) members, including the history from the formation of The COMES to the end of the first period! Many mostly unpublished photos provided by related parties!

The definitive release of The COMES , which includes a flyer and a booklet containing the live chronology in an A4 size, 36-40 page booklet ! ! In the first place, the reason for the release was that Mr. DADDY-O-NOV, who hosted EMOTIONAL MARKET at Shinjuku JAM in the early 1980s, owned the live recordings, so he thought it would be better to release them to the world rather than keeping them dormant.

The idea originated from this. After many twists and turns, the sound source was not released, but the label name was changed to "EMOTIONAL MARKET" and two separately discovered live sound sources were released! The first one was a live performance at Shinjuku LOFT on September 22, 1982. I'm sure many people will be struck by this date and location, and this live will be held as Disinfection GIG Vol.6 HARDCORE 2DAY, and it's the recording date of The COMES sound source of the album "OUTSIDER" released by DOGMA RECORDS! "OUTSIDER" only included 3 songs, but this time the entire live performance is recorded from the same day masters owned by the members! You can directly feel the excitement of the historic live performance!

The second one is the sound source from Fussa CHICKEN SHACK on March 2, 1983, which even live tape traders may not know about! ! The flyer for this day states that the band GAUZE will be performing, but for some reason they were unable to perform and The COMES appeared instead. The concert from that day has been left in the hands of the planners, and this is the first time it has been released! A powerful live performance that builds on the momentum of the NO SIDE recording several months ago! Many songs not included in "NO SIDE" were played at the two live performances, and together with the booklet, this is an extremely rare release!

@Lee Newman - I apologize for not being in here since the start. I'd consider punk to possibly be my #1 favorite genre, next to reggae and funk.

That list has some of my favorites on it, but also has a lot of albums I won't ever really listen to. For me as a 37 year old, I grew up listening to what I'd consider Warped Tour Punk / 90's. Punk "non-apologists" will dismiss most music that didn't take place before 1989, and that's cool, but that's not my story.

I'd love to share a list of my favorite punk/pop punk/punkcallitwhateveryouneedtotosleepatnight with you whenever you're looking for more!
