The Good Ol' Grateful Thread

There are so many of these Grateful Dead/Jerry Garcia boxsets bouncing around these days, I cannot imagine they are selling all that well. My local shop has been heavily discounting them to try to sell them. Plaidroom also had a big sale on a Garcia boxset not too long ago. Wondering if the market is finally saturated for live Dead shows on vinyl.

Not gonna lie, I wish I had the money to buy them all, but then I'd also be struggling with shelf space (and time to even listen/absorb them all).

all the old deadheads listen to CDs now and not vinyl!

i'm not the biggest dead fan but have grown to like them a lot over the last 2 years or so...and even I go for streaming over the vinyl I have for live shows now when I want to listen.

Ive been trying to stick to the original live releases. Live Dead,One from the vault, skull and roses, Europe 72, etc. They are more manageable. I have DP 19, one of the fillmore 69 shows and the JGB set and i barely listen to them because of how big they are. .

yea--those are the ones I listen to the most out of the live Dead I have on vinyl too. Those 4/5/6+ box sets don't get much time on the turntable from me.

I probably listen to more Dead shows than the average person, and I can't imagine listening to these things and having to flip a record every couple songs. Everything about it breaks up what I enjoy about listening to Dead shows. The only recent releases that I've picked up and spun a bunch are the Fillmore 80 2LP from RSD a few years back and the Weir/Wolf Bros live album. Those are both pretty perfect 2lp sets.

Same.

I'll add I listen to these two the most:

didn't realize the real gone price on the latest dick's picks vinyl is $100 off list price...

I'm expecting this to sit around $175 or even lower in the spring. I got the last one for $109 shipped and the RG "sale" price was like $135. This one has an even larger quantity. It's a very oversaturated market.

Picked up this bad boy yesterday…

That's a beautiful thing.

Live taping is a vanishing art. I still go out and record shows and the vast majority of the time, I'm the only taper there.

In days of yore, this book was published every 3 months or so. It's basically print Discogs but only catalogued bootleg LPs. Was pretty indispensable at record shows back in the day when boots were plentiful.

At one point I kind of pictured they'd keep this iteration going on, just continuing to rotate players in but at some point it does just become a (very good) cover band if they aren't putting new music out.

That being said, I was at Levi Stadium for the Fare Thee Well shows, and will def catch a show or two next year for the last go round of this iteration.

I'm hoping Bob goes on tour with Billy Strings. I'd love to see that combo after how good the videos were.

Seeing Billy for the first time next weekend at Ohana fest. Really looking forward to it.

I was thinking about all the iterations of the Dead Side Projects that we've gotten over the years, and how lucky we've been to have so much even after Jerry passed.

I've no doubt that the music will continue on once Dead & Co. have retired that banner and the remaining members who are able to tour have picked up another.

I’m pretty sure that was widely discussed as the vision. Maybe it was in an interview with Bob, but I think we’ll see John, Oteil, Jeff, etc. continue to play Dead tunes in some iteration.

I think it is the drummers who are probably done as to performing regular tour schedules. Weir will never stop so long as his health allows him and the rest are so ingrained in the Dead subculture at this point that I can’t see them leaving the money on the table to do something else.
