The National

Y'all think we would get a 10 year anniversary set of Trouble Will Find Me? That way I can hold off on the box...
I’m gonna say no... the High Violet 10th anniversary was a whole big thing cause it was a bigger release. Like it felt like an established big deal National record. Unfortunately TWFM never got that kind of recognition. It’s a damn shame cause that is sneakily one of their best albums. I’d die for a 10th anniversary complete with live stuff or b-sides, but I am not at all optimistic of that happening.

The press lead-up was wild. The combination of it being hyped by Pfork with those artsy black and white videos, the late night performances, and the BIG sound on the album hit me different than any National album before or after...and not in what I'd describe as a good different. Lol.

I thought it was really boring after 1 listen. I'm on listen 4 and it's growing on me A LOT. It sounds like if The National made an album that sounded like their s/t album today. I like it.

Also regarding the album cover, I wonder if Matt is a fan of Tim Darcy

My signed copy of Serpentine Prison arrived today from Shake It Records. I received a sealed indie exclusive sea blue copy as well as a separate signed sleeve. And they packed it like a tank, would gladly order from them again.

Oh damn! Jealous. I haven't gotten mine yet and I even accidentally upgraded shipping to priority I think...Last I saw, I got an email saying they were delayed.

It's a really solid fall record. New Fleet Foxes, the Matty B and Volcano Choir have been the 3 albums on repeat for me the past week.

So Matt did a duet with Sharon Jones on Booker T. Jones' 2011 album The Road From Memphis, and I feel like you can hear a lot of that same sound in this album. Obviously, Booker is in the mix here, so it stands to reason, it's just a little dissonant to me since I don't generally associate Matt with that sound at all. It's an odd partnership. I like it, I think... but it's odd. Makes me wonder just how much of a driving force Matt is for the National's sound, if the first thing he does once he decides to make a solo album is go seek out a collaborator to dig deeper into a style that he tinkered with one time a decade ago.
I don't see it as that weird a collaboration to be honest. I think he WANTED something different than working with the Dessner bros because then it's not really a solo album...it's just another National record. Based on the Dessner bros output though, I'm guessing they have a lot of influence on the sound of the National. I also don't see it as entirely off-brand from Matty B. Still very much sounds like what I expected from a Berninger album to me (maybe a little more laid back than expected but I also didn't expect it to have any really heavy tracks).

I was shocked - ordered Friday, got shipping notice within an hour and arrived Monday in SF from Ohio.
