The Official Needles and Grooves 1001 Album Generator Project (aka Preachin’ about the Preachers if today’s selection sucks)

I don't know that any of these were recorded in concert. I think they are Live takes, but not in front of an audience. Live Rust would be the live album associated with this album/tour.
Maybe I was just drawing my own conclusion with the album cover and reading that the songs were recorded "live". The Wikiepedia says they were recorded during the Rust Never Sleeps Tour and overdubbed in the studio. I guess I assumed that meant recorded in concert.

So I'm a little rusty (pun intended) on my Neil Young history. Is Rust Never Sleeps considered an "album" or a "live album"? I usually see it in rankings of his albums but it seems like most of the tracks we were recorded in concert?

I think with Neil the live/studio boundaries are bit more blurred than with other artists. Most of his live albums are considered part of canon in ways other artists don’t and lots of stuff is a mix or is recorded live with studio overdubs and will have tracks that aren’t necessarily on solely studio albums that are essential. Rust Never Sleeps would be the traditional album of originals to Live Rusts more full live show set but that doesn’t stop there being live elements to the album.

PJ Harvey - Rid of Me

Allmusic review

I realized I never came back to this one and had only gotten halfway through it back when it was up for the group. This is the sound I was expecting from PJ Harvey when I got Let England Shake in my personal project. I really love this album a lot, as I suspected I might. And it wound up being the perfect listen on the drive home from an utterly shite day at work! 4/5

Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Rust Never Sleeps

Allmusic Review:

Neil Young albums are also available on Amazon and, of course, through the Neil Young Archives.

Here's a youtube if you have none of those:

The vinyl is pretty great as well :p

RIYL:

5/5

This is a Top 5 Neil Young album.
Actually, this is a Top 3 Neil Young album.
Hell, this might even be a Top 1 Neil Young album.

I'd have a hard time ranking them and like Neil, himself, the ranking might be temperamental and shifty. I think most days I would say Harvest of Everyone Knows This is Nowhere would be at the top. This would be in the discussion for top ten.

Harvest for me is a lot like Songs in the Key of Life. I recognize that it may well be his "best" album, or damn near, but it's not my favourite. Top 10? Absolutely! Top 5? Probably. Most days, anyway.

Critics all pretty much hate Harvest... well not hate, but it doesn't rank as high critically as it does with fans. As much as I love Neil and I do, it's hard to call any of his albums perfect. Two more that are always in contention for #1 are Time Fades Away and Tonight's the Night...
