The Return of the Challenge Thread - December 2019

Day 22: What's in the box?

One of my absolute favourite things released this decade was this massive 10-disc, 59-song Grateful Dead tribute comp curated by the Dessner brothers of the National. I probably listened to it more than anything else in the four years or so since it came out. It also spawned my exploration into the actual Dead, who have become one of my favourite bands. I don't have time for the whole thing tonight, but I'll play at least one disc. Here, side A is the entirety of "Terrapin Station" led by a couple of the Grizzly Bear guys.

Day 22 - box

The Beatles - Revolver

Certainly my favourite boxset and possibly my favourite vinyl thing full stop, the Beatles mono boxset is something I probably don't play enough. Spinning this and reminding myself how amazing it sounds is enough to make it one of my new year resolutions to listen to more Beatles! This is my favourite Beatles album as, for me, it's got everything from a bit of early innocence to the later knowingness, and above all just fantastic tunes. (Hope it's ok but I "pre-listened" to all the rest of my records as I'm away from my turntable).

Oof! Ya beat me too it. Obviously a great box and it was nice to get it out and look through the extras a bit regardless. Thankfully I have a few backups.

dave matthews band - dmb live 25

“y’all been really, really good to us, so thank you.”. those are the first words heard on this release, and they are quite fitting. this is a vinyl-only compilation of live tracks, all deep/rare/fan favorites (so no ants marching, crash into me, and other popular songs fans already have twenty live versions of), that was released through the fan club. for longtime dmb fans, and especially vinyl listeners, this is probably the coolest release they’ve ever done.

pretty nice collection of artists here. favorite track on here is nanci griffith’s simple and sweet - if not sappy - take on ‘the giving tree’.

who wouldn’t want to listen to a song like that with their kids?
