The Strokes "Is This It" (2001, Rough Trade)

I remember that I bought this on a Sunday, it was set to drop on the Tuesday so it was a nice surprise! It stayed on my turntable for like 6 straight months this really could have been my "Groundhog Day" record, still LOVE it!!

Day 6: RIP King Tubby

Another one that I am surprised hasn't been played today...

Day 7 - solo

Vincent Ahehehinnou - Best Woman

Vincent Ahehehinnou was the Afrobeat singer for Orchestre Poly-Rythmo and responsible for many of their greatest songs. However, this is his finest hour. So good and funky. It came after he was kicked out of Poly-Rythmo by the band's producer in pretty stressful circumstances. Fabulous reissue on Analog Africa as originals always go for silly money.

Day 7 - Goin’ Solo
Spin an album from artist that split from their band and released a killer Solo record
Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue

Easily the best solo Beach Boys Album. Everyone who knows about The Beach Boys knows the tormented genius of Brian Wilson but Dennis the “black sheep” middle child had some demons of his own. He is responsible for some of The Beach Boys best Post-Pet Sounds songs. His solo music continued down that same brilliant path and was his creative outlet during a time when The Beach Boys had devolved from innovators to merely a nostalgia act.

Idk how I don't own this one as it's one of my favorites!

Yeah, I found a copy at Half Priced Books it’s really clean. They wanted wayyy too much for it (I think it was originally listed for $40) but it was one of those “40% off any one item” sales so it was much more reasonable at $24. They did a RSD release of Bambu a few years back that is pretty great too. I think it is super affordable currently on the discogs.

On a semi-related note: here is a 1980 Good Morning America Interview with the Beach Boys where Dennis is clearly still super fucked up from whatever he was doing the night before. It’s both cringeworthy watching the other Beach Boys try to pretend it’s not happening and kind of a rock star move staying up partying instead of going to sleep when ya gotta be on a morning show at like 4:00 AM...

I have the Bambu release. I think I was going to buy the MOV pressing at one point, but than decided to wait it out and find an original copy. Just haven't come across one since, but at least now I can remember to look out again.

Jerry made this solo masterpiece, playing all the instruments besides the drums, in the early seventies. About half of these songs would find their way into the Dead’s setlists in the years following.

“All I know is something like a bird within her sang!”
