The Return of The Mixtape - the September 2024 Spin Challenge!

Day 26 – The romantic mix
Play something romantic or play something by one of the bands from the “new romantics” movement of the 80’s.

Talk Talk - It’s My Life (song: Dum Dum Girl)
Talk Talk was lumped in with the New Romantics when they first started, often playing with Duran Duran. With this album they started to break away from that mould.

Day 27 – Your friend, your psychiatrist, your solace
Play a record you turn to when you need music to be your friend.

Joy Division - Substance (Transmission)
While I don’t listen to Joy Division as much any more, in my youth this cassette was a constant companion for me. Just hearing the intro to Transmission still gives me a thrill.

Day 27 – Your friend, your psychiatrist, your solace
“The mixtapes we made for ourselves were musical mirrors. The sadness, anger, or frustration you might be feeling at a given time could be encapsulated in the song selection. You made mixtapes that corresponded to emotional states, and they'd be available to pop into the deck when each feeling needed reinforcing or soothing. The mixtape was your friend, your psychiatrist, and your solace.”, David Byrne in How Music Works (2014).

Nathaniel Rateliff - And it's Still Alright
When I need a warm hug of a lyricist, I turn to Nate often.

Day 28 – Home Taping Is Killing Music
Famous music industry campaign from Britain – there were similar ones everywhere – to raise concerns that blank cassettes are killing album sales. Even though time has shown they were not. In came a man named Lord Sugar, who’s company released an affordable twin deck, with an advert including the cheeky bold disclaimer “This machine should only be used to copy material you have generated yourself” – the upshot being to make people aware that you could dub tapes at home. So people did and the campaign fizzled out… but I have to say their tape and crossbones logo is pretty awesome.
Play something that references pirates or bones, or that includes some sort of warning

The Decemberists - Mariner's Revenge Song

Woohoo, caught up!

Adele - 25
Song - All I Ask

I already played the album that I go to when I need a friend nowadays (Rumours) so I had to go back in time for this one. In 2015 when this album came out I was at my lowest and (at the time) darkest period of my life. This album was just the crutch I needed at that time. Experiencing my first heartbreak, feeling lost, isolated, confused and nostalgic, this album came out and made me feel seen in a way music never had before. This was the exact album I needed to hear when I was 19 in 2015 and I’ll never not feel appreciative to Adele for putting it out at the perfect time.

Day 29 – The personalized mixtape
Sometimes a record is so perfect for you, it sounds like it was actually made just for you. Play something that feels like that to you.

Strum & Thrum (song: 28th Day - Pages Turn)
A great compilation of obscure-ish American 80s college rock from a few years ago. While I was only familiar with about 50% of the bands, it still was such a nostalgia kick. This was supposed to be the first of a multi volume set, like a college/jangle rock Nuggets, but that idea seems to have died with the pandemic.

Day 24 – Scotch tape and the record/play-only tabs

Pearl Jam – Vitalogy
1000008964.jpg

This was a tricky prompt for me and I know there are obvious answers escaping me. In the case of this album even the weird shit I know a lot of other folks don't like us stuff I enjoy. I know "Bugs" hits wrong for some but that's actually what's going on my mixtape. "Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me" being right at the end kinda works (and I kinda like it!) I think "Pry, To" is my least favourite of the bunch, and I don't hate it.

Charles Mingus – Mingus Ah Um
1000008966.jpg

A few years back, my wife surprised me one evening with an excursion on a hot tub boat. The boat had a Bluetooth speaker and this is what I wound up putting on and it has been "our" album ever since. She even got a little emotional when I put it on a few minutes ago. "Self-Portrait In Three Colors" will be representing this album on the mixtape.

Day 29: The Personalized Mixtape

Aretha Franklin
- I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You

IMG_9028.jpeg

I love almost everything about this album; Aretha’s vocals, the tone of her piano, the sound of the horns, the backing vocals, the drums, just every little bit! The only song that slightly falters is “Don’t Let Me Lose This Dream”, an 8/10 in a sea of 9s & 10s.

Day 25 – The Boom Box
Like the cassette itself, the boom box originated from Philips in the 1960’s. They became ubiquitous during the 80’s. Since they gained popularity among urban communities, some Americans coined the term “ghetto blaster” to describe them, mainly as an unfortunate backlash against hip-hop culture. Like many during the 80’s, I owned a boombox. In fact, mine even had a phono input, so I would plug my cheapo turntable into it when it was in my room (that’s how I first recorded vinyl to tape in fact).
Play something that might be good to breakdance to. Make Phil Wizard and Ray Gun proud.

DJ Shadow - The Private Press

Track - "Right Thing/GDMFSOB"

Tears For Fears - Songs From the Big Chair

20240929_143142.jpg

Perhaps not the ideal record from this era, but I associate "new romantics" with the sophistipop genre, which 80s-era Tears For Fears absolutely fits.

Day 27 – Your friend, your psychiatrist, your solace
Play a record you turn to when you need music to be your friend.

Grouper - A I A: Alien Observer (signed)

20240929_151504.jpg

One of my top50 all time.
When it comes to leaning on music as a friend, there are only three people (all women) who can provide that comfort: Julia Holter, Liz Harris (Grouper), and Ichiko Aoba (青葉市子). I have seen all live and all rank high on my favorite concerts I have experienced. With A I A: Alien Observer in particular, it is akin to the feeling of knowing that someone out there shares your doubts, struggles, and failures, while floating through a musical sanctuary within a vast cosmos of lo-fi synthesizers, chimes, and vocals. The feeling of knowing that someone in the world cares about you no matter what you are going through.

Various Artists "Soul Slabs Vol. 2"
(2019 Colemine Records)
Right around the turn of the century, like late 90's until about 2005, I was really into the new soul and funk that was emerging. I couldn't get enough of music from the likes of Soul Fire Records, the Poets of Rhythm, Daptone, Timmion Records, Lee Fields, Antibalas and of course Sharon Jones. I collected a ton of original funk 45's as well in that period. I would return to it from time to time, but I had lost touch with the scene over the next 15 years or so. Then I picked-up this compilation during RSD 2019. This new funk and soul was so good. And there was so much of it from so many different artists, all from a single label I was not too familiar with at that point. This was like someone had collected a bunch of funk 45's just for me, and all new to me! For the mix, I'm going with the brilliant cover of Roy Ayers' "Aragon" from the Coffy soundtrack by The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble.
