The Super Thread - All Things Marvel/DC/Etc

but I do want more than flashing lights for entertainment.
Me too, but that is not what I expect from MCU. I just come in with an baseline expectations of flashing lights. If a MCU movie rises above that at all, gives me anything more, it’s a top tier MCU film. I enjoyed this more than Dr. Strange and is easily my 2nd favorite Thor movie. I enjoyed this as much as I enjoyed Loki or and slightly less than WandaVision. It might not be amazing but it didn’t bore me either.

I mean I'm pretty open to whatever with Marvel, it's popcorn fare. But this one was a straight up comedy and I only laughed once. So that's not doing it for me personally.
I’ve been told I have the sense of humor of a 12 year old so maybe that’s the difference because I thought it was funny… in the way that MCU is funny. I wasn’t busting up laughing at Ragnarok or Guardians of The Galaxy or Spider-Man or Ant-Man either but like with all of those there a few moments each film that made me chuckle. A Fat Russell Crowe as Zeus telling Thor if he didn’t stop pursuing the God Butcher he was gonna be excluded from the Orgy, was comedic gold!

I liked RC, liked the screaming goats. But on the whole it just felt to me like it was trying WAY too hard to be funny, most of the jokes just didn't land with me. Which generally is not like Taika, he's usually a bit more... subtle with his writing. But he's got like a zillion things on the go so I'd imagine his focus was... split.

We want very different things out of the MCU.
So I want to clarify what this means, coming after a post complaining the movie lacked depth and character development. Are you saying you don't want these things from the MCU? Or that we shouldn't expect them?

I'm asking genuinely. If I'm misinterpreting your words, I apologize, but I have to say this is all starting to sound a bit bleak to me. I don't think I have overly high standards for the movies I watch, and much like you've said, if a film is entertaining, I'll usually give it a pass. But why are we acting like people shouldn't have high standards for the MCU? There's been almost 30 of these things (as well as several shows) and they are far and above some of the most popular and acclaimed media being produced right now, all with the benefit of Disney's mountains of money. This was a $250 million movie, and for that kind of money, I think it's okay to feel like the line should be raised a little higher than the bare minimum.

I am saying I don’t expect these things from MCU movies. If I get them it’s a pleasant surprise and if you go in expecting these things you’re probably going to be disappointed. The MCU is the McDonalds of entertainment. It’s fine, but it’s mostly empty calories. If I go in to a McDonald’s expecting Noma, heck if I go in expecting Olive Garden; You’re probably going to be disappointed. That doesn’t mean a Big Mac Extra Value Meal can’t be good it just means it is what it is.

Disney is a giant entertainment monolith, they don’t owe consumers anything, they owe their shareholders profits. As a comic book fan I am happy that Super Heroes and Star Wars have proven profitable and they can pump money into these franchises which allows them to be spectacles that I can watch when I have some free time but my expectation is that they are not going to be terrible and for the most part they meet, and every once in a while raises above that standard.

If the MCU ended tomorrow I would be fine. If they made truly excellent films that would be great but if they continue to make not terrible movies and show I can put on the TV while I fold laundry I a cool with that too. If I want Superhero stories that gives me goosebumps I can pull one of the amazing collections off my bookshelf.

Yeah, I can't give them this same pass, sorry. It's fine that you personally feel this way. Your own viewing experience is really all that matters, because no one else can or should tell you how to watch or enjoy something. But as someone who was growing up during the 2010s, this idea that these movies should automatically be viewed with low expectations just feels like a massive moving of the goalposts to me. Have people forgotten what a big deal, both commercially AND critically, movies like Iron Man, The Avengers and Civil War were? How Endgame nearly became the highest grossing film ever made? That Black Panther was nominated for Best Picture?? Sure, not all of these things are necessarily markers of quality, but I know for a fact a lot of people considered the MCU to be way, way above the standard you're describing in your post, because I have hard time believing that audiences would have sat through ten years and 30 movies worth of film otherwise.

I feel the need to make it clear I've never told anyone they shouldn't enjoy an MCU project. People like what they like and I would never want to make someone feel bad for the mere act of liking a piece of media. I can only speak to my own feelings and experiences. My main issue isn't with people liking the movies, but with people acting like any criticism of them is invalid. I'm the kind of person who loves to discuss the media I watch and too often now it seems that people no longer want to have those discussions when it comes to Marvel. I've talked before about how they are simultaneously the most popular movies being made but people act like you should just ignore them if you don't enjoy them. That logic baffles me; how can you know if you'll like a movie before you've actually seen it?

I still consider myself a fan of the MCU, largely off the goodwill they built up over a decade of mostly solid, entertaining blockbuster movies. I don't expect high art from the MCU, but I do expect a certain level of consistent quality that to me several of the recent projects haven't met. I don't want to come off like a hater because a lot of my negative emotions towards the newer output do come from a place of love. There are so many MCU movies that I genuinely enjoy, and whenever I was praising those films, no one ever tried to tell me I was taking them too seriously then. It was only when I started to be negative and vocalize that I felt there has been decline in quality that people started to respond that I just expect too much. Do I?? Or do I just feel like these characters deserve better movies?

I think this is probably the delineation. I personally don’t think there has been a drop off in quality Iron Man and/or the Black Panther to what has recently been released. I think you likely find those movies to be better and more important than I do. I rarely rewatch MCU movies usually I just move on to whatever it next. There is no need to revisit them because the world keeps moving forward.

I love Marvel movies.

IMO, the last two (Strange and Thor) were the embodiment of all the unfair criticisms that snobs and bros have thrown at MCU in the past. They also feel like they share too much DNA with pre-MCU superhero movies that had bogus storylines, handled characters poorly, featured cartoonishly bad special effects, utilized stunt casting as a draw, etc.

Because I am watching movies at home now I miss all the media and criticism cycles, so, forgive me if this is already covered but has there been some shakeup behind the scenes with the MCU? Is there a realignment of resources or some definitive shift in how they’re producing the last few films?

I would say the biggest difference is churn. We used to get one or two new projects every year, now there are multiple projects constantly going throughout the year. The biggest changes in quality IMO has to do with the graphic effects side where all these series and movies are destroying these independent non-union effects house creators by grinding them to the nub.

And I think the side projects have an impact on viewability. I remember when the Disney + series started rolling out they said that while they would inform the movies, they wouldn't be 'necessary' viewing. I can't imagine Dr. Strange and the Multiverse of Madness making much sense as far as Wanda's character arc without having viewed Wandavision.

All hail the Murphyverse.

Holy shit!

I read Batman: White Knight back in 2019 and remember loving it but hadn't read any of Murphy's stuff since. I re-read White Knight earlier this week and just now finished Curse of the White Knight. Absolutely phenomenal nerdout. Unfuckwitable. Some of the damn finest Bat that ever manned.
