Florence & The Machine / Wet Leg ~ SDSU Open Air Theater 10/12

Really enjoyed Wet Legs opening set. Thought they had great stage presence and were surprisingly comfortable in front of a large crowd. Would definitely see them again.

This was my 5th time seeing Florence & The Machine, and her voice never fails to give me the chills. She's matured into a very engaging performer - inhabiting the songs she's singing, and also being very giving with the audience. She did some of the things that I've seen her do before, coming out and singing in the audience, and running around the crowd - but as she noted it definitely had additional significance in a post-covid world, reminding us of the musicians, stagehands, venue employees, etc. that were at a standstill for a few years. Good reminder of the healing power of music and shared experiences.

Afternoon radio session with Langhorne Slim today, who is one of the most thoughtful, honest, and engaging musicians to come through the studio in recent memory. Got my record signed and chatted about how Panic Attack was released at such a relevant time in my life. Great stuff!!

After trying for a while to get some commitment out my friend and / or wife to come to gigs with me, I’m going to start going to gigs on my own.

I’ve solo’d dinner, cinema etc, but gigs have always been a bit more of a communal affair. But, I’d rather gig solo than keep missing out.

Anyway, I’m off to see Future Islands mid November, Slow Readers Club in March, and potentially I might go and see Sports Team on Sunday night. I’m looking forward to getting back out to see live music as I’ve not been to a gig since Sleaford Mods last November.

I've come to prefer solo gigs, honestly.

New Order / Pet Shop Boys -Unity Tour, Chase Center, San Francisco

I'm a huge fan of both bands but had only seen NO once and never seen PSB. This was a fantastic double bill featuring two 80's legendary acts! New Order rocked a little harder than expected and Pet Shop Boys really blew me away with their theatrics.

I'm probably half and half on going to shows solo or with friends. Learned awhile ago that if it's important to me, I just need to go - and if others aren't into it, it's probably best that they don't go :)

I did the same earlier this year. Hard to get my buddies out during the week most of the time, but after the last couple years of no shows I decided it didn't matter; I was going to every show I was interested in that I could. It's a real treat. Seeing King Buffalo solo this evening, can't wait.

That said, I saw Maiden with my six oldest buddies last night in Hamilton, first time we were all together in ages, and had a blast. Our third time seeing 'em for four of us, first time for three. Still fun as hell, great band.

Thanks for the re-assurance chaps - good to see there are other solo gig goers enjoying the experience.

I've booked to see Sports Team on Sunday night, so I'm looking forward to that. Kids to bed, jump in the car, 40 min drive, run to the door, hopefully catch the opener...

I don't mind going solo to gigs at all. Usually, you can find people to talk to, so you don't feel alone at all!

Normally, the husband comes with me, but we have two aging dogs, and he was awesome enough to stay home and care for them while I went on my mini tour following The National.

On a totally unrelated note... we were in Hamilton to see Pearl Jam in early Sept, and since we had seats rather than GA, we were able to enjoy a few beverages at our hotel bar pre show. The bartender there was amazing, and I recall he mentioned that he was seeing Maiden there in a few weeks. Had a great chat with him about music. It's funny how sometimes these convos can transport you back in time.

Glad you had fun!

I got a ticket for a late show to see Kendra Morris/GA-20/Monophonics at the 9:30 club last night. Doors opened at 10pm. I think Broken Social Scene had played an early show already that night.

I missed the first bit of Kendra Morris but caught a good 3-4 of her songs. She has great energy and was really belting out the vocals. Unfortunately there weren’t that many people in the crowd yet so there wasn’t a ton of rapturous excitement from the audience for her to feed off of, but she seemed to be having a blast working the “crowd” anyway. After sitting through so many openers who are clearly very nervous or new to performing, I was pretty blown away by how solid of a performer she was and how great her whole band sounded. I hope she continues to gain more exposure and can play bigger stages in the future because it would be really fun to see her performing with an even bigger crowd. She was hanging out in the audience after her set and seemed to be having a lot of fun meeting people. Kudos to @AndySlash for picking her album as his AOTM and introducing me to her!

GA- 20 did a quick soundcheck (maybe 20 mins?) and then launched into their set. I’d streamed their music but never really got into their sound. It was definitely a different story live. Just felt like they had a lot more energy and precision. The songs seemed to gain more steam and chug along with real momentum. They also seemed to be really having fun, but when they would solo, they didn’t get as much crowd reaction as they’re probably used to (DC crowds are really good at just talking over the music and being oblivious to what’s going on onstage). They sounded really good, though.

Monophonics came on at some point after midnight. I’d never seen them live before so wasn’t sure what to expect and the two openers had both been so good that I was a little unsure of whether they’d be able to keep everyone from heading home in time to catch the last Metro train (which closes at 1am these days). But wow, they took all the momentum and energy from the openers and really ran with it. Every song was jam-packed with groovy tension that got the crowd moving. The horns and backup singers and drums and guitarists were all stars - it felt like a supergroup. Kelly’s vocals were incredible. It’s baffling that each of these bands doesn’t have a higher profile but hopefully they’ll continue to gain fans and book bigger venues.

My phone is pretty old, but here are some pics anyway:

Went to Portland to see the second night of Japanese hardcore punk quartet Otoboke Beaver (おとぼけビーバー) last night. Had a great time, as I had hoped, but incurred a few scrapes and bruises from the ubiquitous moshing.

Hell Baby

One of the most interesting aspects about this tour was that Otoboke Beaver had a different opener on every date of the tour (including both stops in Portland). The day before featured a band by the name Yellow Room, but Sunday's show featured this post-hardcore punk group from Seattle.
Fairly enjoyable. All of the songs sounded identical to one another and I couldn't make out the vocalist's lyrics whatsoever lol. Drummer was on point, a common observation I've made with many artists/bands I've seen this year; opener or headliner.

Otoboke Beaver (おとぼけビーバー)

These gals brought the 🔥 from start to finish. 22 song setlist, spanning ~75min! Almost all of the songs performed were a mixture from 2019's excellent Itekoma Hits [いてこまヒッツ] and this year's SUPER CHAMPON [スパーチャンポン]. The group requested the crowd to not record videos for reposting to YouTube, so there's no footage from me in this post or on my channel.

Lead vocalist Accorinrin [あっこりんりん], guitarist Yoyoyoshie [よよよしえ], bassist Hiro-Chan [ひろちゃん], and drummer Kahokiss [かほキッス] all brought eccentricity, energy, humor, and no shortage of crowd interaction through references to Portland attractions they have visited (why does everyone love Voodoo Doughnuts? they are incredibly overrated) and call-and-response sections of songs.

They started off with "Yakitori" from the new record; fun track. Moshing begun almost immediately afterward (and for the majority of the show), from the moment the electric "Don't Light my Fire" started. Thankfully was able to stay upright with being in front of the gate and a larger dude supporting me from behind. Yoyoyoshie even jumped into crowd to crowdsurf midway through the set for ~30 seconds! She also did this right as she returned back to the stage for an encore.

Their tour manager took a group photo just before the encore. I'm visible; perhaps you can make out where I am?

Post-show

Right after the brief encore, I was worried that there might have been a potential scuffle. Three people in arms length of me were in a shouting match with one another, with some completely unnecessary epithets thrown around. It lasted for a few minutes, and I was glad it didn't escalate to a fist fight or worse.
After the crowd mostly cleared out ten minutes later, I waited around for all (or any) of the band members to show up. During a brief convo with someone else, Hirochan came out and gave a few of us some high fives. Accorinrin also stepped back to the stage and I asked her if she could sign my Itekoma Hits I tucked away safely underneath the stage...to which she just smiled and politely declined. Heartbroken at first, but it was understandable.
Prior to coming to Sunday's show, I learned from Instagram that they sold out their tour shirt on the Portland show the night before. I headed to the merch table to see if they had any Polaroids they had signed for this night, but learned that they sold out of those too! Pretty bummed about it, but hoping they return to Portland eventually. It was a very enjoyable night overall.

Sports Team (supported by Fat Dog) at Rock City in Nottingham

My first solo gig, and one I thoroughly enjoyed! Without having to worry about anyone else, I was able to get stuck into the heart of the crowd and jump around like I was 15 again. Very fun. Sweaty. Rewarding.

The band were great, raucous and energetic and the frontman - Alex Rice - had great stage presence.
