Upcoming/Recent Shows

My Chemical Romance ~ LA Forum October 14th.

Drove up to LA last Friday to see MCR with my daughter and her best friend as a birthday present for them. First time seeing MCR for all of us. This was night 3 of a 5 night stand and the Forum, which holds ~17,000 people. Excellent show and crowd, and so much fun to experience it through the kids fandom.

After trying for a while to get some commitment out my friend and / or wife to come to gigs with me, I’m going to start going to gigs on my own.

I’ve solo’d dinner, cinema etc, but gigs have always been a bit more of a communal affair. But, I’d rather gig solo than keep missing out.

Anyway, I’m off to see Future Islands mid November, Slow Readers Club in March, and potentially I might go and see Sports Team on Sunday night. I’m looking forward to getting back out to see live music as I’ve not been to a gig since Sleaford Mods last November.
Unless I can get my wife (never) or daughter (depends on her schedule) to go to a show with me, I go solo. It's a good time.

I got a ticket for a late show to see Kendra Morris/GA-20/Monophonics at the 9:30 club last night. Doors opened at 10pm. I think Broken Social Scene had played an early show already that night.

I missed the first bit of Kendra Morris but caught a good 3-4 of her songs. She has great energy and was really belting out the vocals. Unfortunately there weren’t that many people in the crowd yet so there wasn’t a ton of rapturous excitement from the audience for her to feed off of, but she seemed to be having a blast working the “crowd” anyway. After sitting through so many openers who are clearly very nervous or new to performing, I was pretty blown away by how solid of a performer she was and how great her whole band sounded. I hope she continues to gain more exposure and can play bigger stages in the future because it would be really fun to see her performing with an even bigger crowd. She was hanging out in the audience after her set and seemed to be having a lot of fun meeting people. Kudos to @AndySlash for picking her album as his AOTM and introducing me to her!

GA- 20 did a quick soundcheck (maybe 20 mins?) and then launched into their set. I’d streamed their music but never really got into their sound. It was definitely a different story live. Just felt like they had a lot more energy and precision. The songs seemed to gain more steam and chug along with real momentum. They also seemed to be really having fun, but when they would solo, they didn’t get as much crowd reaction as they’re probably used to (DC crowds are really good at just talking over the music and being oblivious to what’s going on onstage). They sounded really good, though.

Monophonics came on at some point after midnight. I’d never seen them live before so wasn’t sure what to expect and the two openers had both been so good that I was a little unsure of whether they’d be able to keep everyone from heading home in time to catch the last Metro train (which closes at 1am these days). But wow, they took all the momentum and energy from the openers and really ran with it. Every song was jam-packed with groovy tension that got the crowd moving. The horns and backup singers and drums and guitarists were all stars - it felt like a supergroup. Kelly’s vocals were incredible. It’s baffling that each of these bands doesn’t have a higher profile but hopefully they’ll continue to gain fans and book bigger venues.

My phone is pretty old, but here are some pics anyway:

First off jealous. I would have gone to a stop for this show if it had come around here despite my reservations about shows currently (I'm immunocompromised and have a 1 year old at home).... anyhow, what you described about GA-20's show is exactly how I would describe their music in general at this point. I dug the first album but I don't think I would have picked it up if not for my insane addiction to @Plaid Room / Colemine releases. The Hound Dog Taylor album was more like it and I absolutely love Crackdown.

Hey @Plaid Room / Colemine sorry I couldn't make the record show at Motorco, if you guys want to do a Colemine Revue there, I'll show up though!

Ichiko Aoba (青葉市子) is a Japanese artist who found her way to my ear in late 2020, when Windswept Adan made the rounds late in the year and impacting a few best-of lists. She visited Portland last night as part of her first ever tour in North America. Her performance showcased her divine vocal prowess, and her otherworldly classical guitar talent. Smitten by her, truly. I will be thinking about last night's concert for years to come.

I got to the venue about 40min before doors to ensure a nice seat...and I was the first one there! After entering, I got a seat directly in front of the lone chair on the stage where Aoba would sit in for the entirety of the show. Very minimal stage equipment/instruments.

I got seated for about half an hour before deciding to check out merch, which had $40 signed copies of Windswept Adan, some T-shirts (of XL sizes and above only), story booklets of Windswept Adan, and signed posters. I had brought my own Windswept Adan jacket from home hoping to get it signed. Upon overhearing that someone asked a merch attendant if Aoba would be signing merch after the show, he was told that she did at some stops and not at others. I panicked upon hearing this and decided to buy a signed copy (which was at dangerously low stock) at the table, as well as a poster. Headed back to my seat to await the show.

Charlie Martin

Again with another solid opener. Perhaps some of you know of his music on this forum? His name sounds oddly familiar.
Singer/songwriter artist with a bit of twang. Enjoyable, and will add him to my backlog.

Ichiko Aoba (青葉市子)

She drew everyone's eyes from the moment she stepped onto the stage. Her traditional clothing, graceful and polite speech in a room so quiet that you could hear a pin drop, and her classical guitar were transfixing. By the time she finished the second song in the setlist (the extravagant "Pilgrimage"), I completely forgot that there were people next to me in a packed, seated venue.

She played 12 songs, mostly from Windswept Adan but a few from 0 and others as well. Set time went for just under ~70min, including encore.

In between songs, she occasionally used her humming as a vehicle to create a short story, much like how the Katakana alphabet can be used to mimic sound effects. In one incredibly cute instance, she used her humming to create the onomatopoeic sound to a small insect landing on her mic stand, using her right index+middle fingers to symbolize the insect itself, oscillated her pitch in tandem with moving her fingers along the stand up to the microphone, then up to the element, and then a quick sharp gobble as her fingers landed on the microphone element. 😍

Not only was this a top10 show for the year, it's one of my top10 all time. I have no doubt in my mind. I was so moved and captivated by what I had the honor to have witnessed and hear.

This song, "機械仕掛乃宇宙" from Aoba's excellent 0 features so many twists and turns, and changing time signatures to go along with a heartfelt vocal performance. This song is actually over 12min long, but I only captured the last 8min of it.

This one titled "太陽さん" as well, a quick and delightful closer before the encore:

Post-Show

After stretching and chatting briefly with the nearby people in the front, I waited around in the main stage area if others were thinking about the same. I ended up heading down to merch area and had a chat with a pair of gentlemen while waiting in line for ~5min, which I entered the conversation after hearing one of them mentioning MP as a record store that he liked. Small world!
After I got near to the front of the merch table, Aoba appeared just a minute later. She was signing booklets and records that some people brought from home. I asked her in Japanese to request in signing mine that I brought with me, which has a slightly different signature to the one I bought at the table (it has the same fish and name scribble, but also with "18 Oct 2022" symbolizing the concert day 🤗). Also got a photo with her! ❤️ I thanked her for the beautiful concert and wished her well for the rest of tour, hoping that she makes a return to Portland someday.
With the second signed Windswept Adan, I'll figure out what to do with it eventually. NO, this does not count towards my no-buy month, which I have honored. ;)
I'm still smitten.

EDIT: Corrected Ichiko's first name; used incorrect kanji in bolded subheader.
EDIT 2: Found the song title for the closer in the second video, "太陽さん." It can be interpreted as "Mr./Mrs. Sun" like giving the sun personification. Very appropriate given the cheeriness of the music.

Solo gigs...they make so much sense, so why do I repeatedly buy two tickets to shows and then try to drag a half-interested friend along?

Anyway, this seems as good as anywhere: what do you all use for ear protection for shows. I have a pair of eargasm plugs that I've used for the last few years, but don't love them. The fit doesn't feel great (they probe deep in the ear) and, no matter what they tell me, the sound is just muffled. But I've always just accepted that as the necessary tradeoff. So, do you just use the foam ones? I saw a review for a company called Loop recently and was wondering if those were any better.

Foam earplugs, I resign myself that I'm going to lose some fidelity in order to save what's left of my hearing.
I go to a lot of metal concerts, and honestly you can hear the nuances and intricacies a lot better when wearing earplugs. Plus you'll have less of headache at the end of the night.

Caveat being you can hear yourself sing along and that may or may not be a good thing depending on your arrogance.

Yup just foam is fine. I have bought fancier ones from the drug store before but they fit uncomfortably in my ears and some sound still seeps through. Foam is the way to go. A box of like 30 at the supermarket or drug store shouldn't be more than $10. Sometimes I lose them during or after a show, leave them in my car or just misplace them. I don't really care since I have many more to go through.

I've been using an older version of these plugs for years and love them. Cancels out a lot of the surrounding crowd noises and doesn't impact the concert fidelity too much. In fact, during shows with crappy mixes I have a better time picking out individual instruments with then in compared to with them out.

Saw W.I.T.C.H. on Tuesday night in a tiny club. Ho-lee-shith.

What an incredible band. This was one of those shows that not only delivered great music but repaired and reinvigorated my soul. I'm a better person for having been there.

If you know what's good for you, go see W.I.T.C.H. play live and buy their music and merchandise.

Here's a really crappy picture...
