Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I got the box. I really like all the predicted picks (thanks @TCell)! The only pick I’m a bit ‘meh’ on is the Erykah Badu pick. But then, I’m looking forward to spinning the current pressing I have against this VMP pressing!

Expensive box but I thought why not. The music is right up my alley and I think I’ll absolutely love it! 😇

I’m excited to hear your A-B comparison on that Badu.

I love this and how perfect would a DIY anthology be for Dischord???
i mean it makes sense... people can make their own boxes for it, and put all their records into it.. maybe even write our own liner notes :p

of course this is completely unofficial... in fact im pretty sure the mods wont let us make it official.... but i'd be so down

so should i start the DM? and if so.. who will be part of the compilation process

Hmmm, maybe Beefeater - House Burning Down

Could we do half Discord albums? That way we can have SS Decontrol, Soul Side - Less Deep Inside and the Reptile House 7"
@johnpisme should we do it? i feel like this should be a good spotlight for a developing punk scene. maybe even do what VMP did and do each record by subgenres of punk
Please find whatever subgenre Q & Not U fit in.
I mean, don't get me wrong, I danced harder at Q & Not U shows than ANY other band I have ever seen live... and that description fits....

But "modern?" Those albums are almost... holy shit, 20 years old? Fucking really?
I am all about a N&G Anthology set.
Please include Fire Party in the N&G Dischord Anthology!

Would this actually work? Who's down to help pick albums/organize this?

Am I the only one who thinks it's too bad The Supremes album is buried in this Anthology? IMO, it's one of top Soul albums of all time, and hasn't had a recent reissue, so it seems like it would have made a great Essentials RotM. That way 20k+ subscribers could enjoy it (many for the first time), rather than bury it in an expensive box set that only 1000 folks get to have.

To me, that's a hell of a lot more essential than UFO.

They must be pretty vinyl me not pleased with the numbers so far considering how quickly the first Anthology sold.

If this isn't close to selling out after the early bird discounts, there's no way this sells out at the full price.
tbh this is probably a good thing for VMP in general...

they need something like this to flop

its sad it had to be something about the women of motown

but they had to know that their pricing stuff isn't actually gonna work (especially when they are planning on ending sales in a week and a half)

It’s probably going to be a cool box. I’ve been surprised by the lack of reissues of classic Motown albums. I need more in my collection.

I didn’t sign up for the blue note anthology because there were other, more fundamental jazz albums that were not going to be in that set that I needed and wanted a lot more. I don’t get that vibe from this set.

And yet...I just can’t pull the trigger on this. I think it’s the combination of AAA pricing on top of the “mystery box” aspect. I’ve paid in the $40-55 dollar range for The Doors, Buddy Holly, Dave Brubeck, Bob Dylan, and a handful of other records that are generally considered to be among the best in music history and that I really like. I just don’t have it in me to pay those kinds of prices for 8 unknown albums in one genre.

But more power to those that do!

Yeah, hate that it was the women of Motown that they decided to jack the price up on.

No, you’re not the only one. I think it’s a shame too that Reach Out and Temptations Sing Smokey is buried in the mono box. IMO as much as it’s easy to drag VMP, it’s clear to me that Motown just doesn’t really care. They really should have just done a BN style campaign and released their top 25 albums as singles and been done with it, not two overpriced boxes. That’s why I can’t fault people for getting this, I really think it’s the only way you’re going to get some of these in this quality, and I think the era of cutting records from this period AAA is waning.

mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm! They should have made this the September Essentials ROTM instead of Jim Sullivan. It would have been perfect! Especially as we got a pop/rock album in August Essentials, will be getting an Alternative rock album for October and a rock album for November. A classic soul album in September would’ve have been perfect!!!

Even though I’m getting the box, I would’ve have preferred for everyone to get The Supremes because like you said, it’s one of the best soul albums of all time!!!

I bit. It is honestly more than I'd like to spend, per album. But the reviews on the last box (I missed out due to real-world work obligations) were excellent from a sound standpoint. And complete boxes in good condition are selling for near issue price. I think that women were an important part of what made Motown what it was and that it's a story worth telling.

I don't usually pay much attention to VMP's editorial bent -- it's tiresome -- but when they nail a Classics release (which they do often), it's a keeper. I guess we'll see what happens here.

Wish me luck! ;)

I mean, it's been a few hours...I wouldn't go calling it a flop just yet.
