Vinyl Me Please Anthology

tbh this is probably a good thing for VMP in general...

they need something like this to flop

its sad it had to be something about the women of motown

but they had to know that their pricing stuff isn't actually gonna work (especially when they are planning on ending sales in a week and a half)
I hear you! But I don’t want this to flop so they continue doing VMP Anthologies! But at the same time, I don’t want prices to increase more because VMP know they can still sellout with high prices.

But yeah, I just hope pricing isn’t too high on the next VMP Anthology.

However, I’m cutting down on standard new vinyl releases in general. Like I’m not even getting Sampa The Great for example. I’m just going to choose quality over quantity. I know the records in this Motown box will bring much more joy when I spin them compared to most of the new vinyl releases I buy.

I’ll have to ‘really’ like the new release/artist for when they release their new album on vinyl. E.g - Danny Brown, JPEGMAFIA & FKA Twigs

I just need to stop spending so much on vinyl. I can’t really afford it with the lifestyle I want. But I’m OK dramatically cutting back on vinyl spending. I’m literally spending at least a couple hundreds each week though 😂

Now that so much people love vinyl, so much good shit is coming out (Blue Note Tone Poet/Blue Note 80, VMP Exclusives, Fatbeats exclusives, Light In The Attic etc).

Nothing was going to sell as fast as Blue Note. I have no doubt VMP misjudged the desire for people to want to spend $300+ on Motown records. But to act like Blue Note's sell out was going to happen or be realistic for every Anthology is a bit misguided. Blue Note has a ridiculous fan base that will shell out $200 on 2 LP sets with extras. Motown doesn't have that fervor or we'd see a lot more Motown represses than we do.

That’s why the pricing on this is just confusing.

Particularly since the customer feedback from that set was not the universal acclaim that would drive a heightened price.

Mmmmmmmmm! You’ve literally hit the nail on the head!

Like LMAO at VMP acting like this Anthology could sell out as quickly as the Blue Note Anthology, especially with those prices....

yeah but compared to blue note being 3 hours

its been still going for double the length and is gonna cost 350 dollars when midnight hits (i dunno the time zone though)

IMO it's taking longer to sell because a) it's more expensive b) Motown is not quite the insta buy that Blue Note is and c) a lot of people were put off by how the first Anthology played out.

That still doesn't mean it won't sell out and I don't think VMP cares if it takes hours or days or weeks.

I'm not buying it as it's too rich for my blood but I would love to own this otherwise.

I dunno... after tonight it's going way up in price. I think if they still have 300+ anthologies to move that it doesn't sell out. Anything under 300 at this point VMP will stoke the flames and get them sold.

I'd expect a post on their twitter tomorrow sometime hyping up the FOMO on the remaining copies, especially if it's under 300 remaining. From a FOMO perspective, I'd imagine being under 300 would be a super sweet spot for them. 400 is nearly half remaining so most people won't bite on that. 300 can indicate as low as 201 copies remaining, meaning you could assume nearly 70-80% of the stock is sold. FOMO intensifies.

1. The first LP by a solo woman in Motown History:
Mary Wells - Bye Bye Baby / I Don't Want To Take A Chance

2. An LP recorded in a single night to capitalize on the title track racing up the charts:
The Marvelletes – Please Mr. Postman?

3. The first mega smash LP at Motown, it was on the charts for more than a year.
Is the Supremes- Where Did Our Love Go

4. Was the only solo LP the artist ever got to make.
Tammi Terrell - Irrisistable

5. Features a Stevie Wonder co-writer covering the Beatles using a talkbox.
Syreeta - Syreeta

6. By one of the stars of the '20 Feet from Stardom' documentary, a backup singer whose solo LPs are hidden gems.
Tata Vega – Full Speed Ahead or Totally Tata or Try All My Love or Givin’ All My Love

7. Completely self-written and self-produced, a rarity for Motown.
Teena Marie- It Must Be Magic

8. Written after a period of writer's block, it's her most underrated LP.
Erykah Badu - Worldwide Underground

What do I win?

Sorry team, but I think I messed one of my guesses up as none of them are 2LPs. I'm pretty confident on most of them, although less certain about 6 - 8...maybe the Badu album is New Amerykah Pt. 1 instead of Worldwide Underground? Technically, WU was an EP, not an LP, and New Amerykah Pt. 1 also came after her writer's block, but I thought it was pretty well regarded. Any help?

EDIT: Also, I'm pretty sure #2 could also be Martha & The Vandellas - Heat Wave if it's not The Marvelettes.

i'm in on this. i'm one who doesn't mind not knowing what's in the box ahead of time- after all, i had been paying $300 or whatever for a year membership to vmp not having any clue what i'd be receiving, so that argument really doesn't work for me. i also don't have many motown records (and none by women artists) so i can't help but think there will be a lot to listen to and like here that i'd not been familiar with before. so i'm feeling pretty positive about this.

I sincerely hope that you get your money’s worth but I’m not sure this reasoning makes sense, for two main reasons:

  1. This anthology is 8 albums. You’d receive 12 ROTMs with an annual membership. 12 is 50% more than 8. But the price is nearly the same.
  2. For over a year now, we’ve had the ability to swap every ROTM, so you’re not at all going in blind on the membership if you have a general idea of what’s available for swaps. You have options to choose from with ROTMs, but not with this anthology.

You're not wrong, but the two things are different.

Maybe we will get Worldwide Underground as a 2LP with Hollywood and “Love Of My Life (An Ode To Hip-Hop” (Feat. Common) & “Hollywood” will be bonus tracks!

That would actually be heaven!!!

And I’m hoping for Teena Marie, we get “Irons In The Fire” instead of “It Must Be Magic”, although I’d be very happy with It Must Be Magic!

I’m hoping it’s a 2LP release for Erykah Badu with the bonus tracks! That would just be incredible! 🌟

If not, it will be New Amerykah Pt. One! But like you said, Worldwide Underground is so much more underrated! So I think it will be Worldwide Underground. I’m just so happy it’s going to be a 2LP! 🥰

PS - Worldwide Underground is definitely a studio album and not an EP!

OMG, I’m sooooo excited about this box! So much more keen for it than the Blue Note Anthology box to be honest!

I have a feeling that this will be amazing! I even want to keep the box!

And all this soul is going to really warm the heart up. Screw all the new albums. I need some AAA/high quality pressings of great soul Motown records.

This box is going to be everything!!!!!!!

It’s probably going to be a cool box. I’ve been surprised by the lack of reissues of classic Motown albums. I need more in my collection.

It's really not surprising. As I previously mentioned, I know a lot of Motown fanatics. They are people in my parent's generation for the most part. Here's the scoop, the real hardcore Motown devotees are older Black people, who are definitely not VMP's core audience. You can tell who they are, because despite the significance and importance of Motown, their social media engagement for this set (and everything else) is pretty much dead. Why? Because their core base doesn't use social media. Additionally, they really don't care about reissues. At least not in the audiophile sense. CDs have been fine. Not to mention that all these albums are available to stream.

Also, you ever try to surprise an older Black person? It won't go over well. I say this as a Black man in his 30s. Now, imagine the prospect of telling them that for $345, they will get a mystery box of records and will not know what they are. Oh, and when they get said records, they should ideally leave some of them under wraps for a bit. Look man, old people don't have time for these shenanigans...lol

This was pop music made for mass consumption. It's like wondering where all the top shelf, AAA Backstreet Boys and N'Sync reissues are a decade from now. Is their core base going to pay $345 for it after the early bird discounts?

Still, I think this will eventually sell out. It will just take longer than the Blue Note anthology, and it certainly won't be typical Motown fanatics buying it. All this stuff is not for them. And as wonderful as Motown is, it does not have the collector mindset for ephemera like Blue Note and jazz music to a larger extent. There's also a cultural cachet of coolness with jazz and people will shell out the big bucks for it. It's not there with Motown. Whether some want to admit this is another matter altogether, but it's the reason why some Blue Note original pressings sell for as much as $7,000 (i.e. Hank Mobley 1568).

If VMP wants to replicate the success of the Blue Note anthology, then they should do another jazz label anthology and price it like the Blue Note anthology. Jazz fans are used to buying box sets. Imagine an anthology for Impulse! Records, Strata-East, ESP-Disk, or Black Saint/Soul Note. If they can get the license to do it from any of those labels for an anthology set, that would absolutely FLY off the shelves.

This is all so true! After reading this post, I couldn’t agree with you more! Your analysis is spot on! 🎯
