Vinyl Me Please Anthology

I bit. It is honestly more than I'd like to spend, per album. But the reviews on the last box (I missed out due to real-world work obligations) were excellent from a sound standpoint. And complete boxes in good condition are selling for near issue price. I think that women were an important part of what made Motown what it was and that it's a story worth telling.

I don't usually pay much attention to VMP's editorial bent -- it's tiresome -- but when they nail a Classics release (which they do often), it's a keeper. I guess we'll see what happens here.

Wish me luck! ;)
The sound quality on the Blue Note Anthology was excellent so I doubt you will be disappointed from a sound perspective. Everything else about the BN Anthology was disappointing though. So ultimately I’m still glad I got the first Anthology but it definitely missed the mark on most things and was by no means a bargain.

Someone on reddit had a great point (!!!) that the Bob Dylan in Mono box set is also AAA pressed at RTI and is half the price of this proposed set.
Yep. 8 albums, all sound amazing and the packaging is WAY higher quality than what the BN Anthology 1 was. I will say though, that I think the Dylan in Mono box started out at $300 and has only recently dipped all the way down to $140 which seems to be the new price. Maybe we'll see the BN Anthology 2 on amazon for $140 in a few months??

Nope. No way. That price is absolutely a bluff.
It's going to be really interesting to see if the price actually goes up or not. I think if it does, this thing might not sell out at all, in which case I wonder what they do with the other box sets if they are saying it's only on sale for a certain window? Do we see it pop up at Bespoke Post? Or on Amazon or on sale on UTurn's site like other "sold out" ROTMs have?

I bet you know what’s in the Dylan set, too

I would say not too many boxes have that value, but it’s clear proof you can make a profit doing so, provided you own the recordings. If anything this begs the question of why UMG’s Motown mono box is $150/5 when Sony charges $140/9.... (counting BoB as a 2X).

Sadly, box sets are more often a ripoff IMO, especially when licensing is involved. One precedent for this Anthology one might be the AP Doors Box. $400 / 6 Albums, 12 discs total, somehow costs $70 more than buying individually to get a lame looking box.

Box sets justify costs typically for three reasons:
1) featuring albums you can only get in that box
2) having enough extras and exclusives to make the box set price worth it
3) making it cheaper than if you were to buy all those albums separately.

VMP is selling people on 1 and 2 (and FOMO), yet last round, the extras and exclusives added zero value to the box and we have seen from a lot of VMP releases that these records eventually get re-released elsewhere.

Totally, all three tactics VMP is using are a turn-off to me.

To clarify on point 1, did any of the albums in the Blue Note box get reissued outside of the box with the KPG stampers?

I'm thinking it doesn't...and yeah if it doesn't sell out, then what? Offer it for even more of a discount? I'm really interested to see what happens. If it never sells out I'd keep an eye on bespoke post...

I'm torn about this selling out. On the one hand, I want them to keep doing anthologies so I want this to be successful enough to make them keep going. On the other, I want them to price it more reasonably in the future. Also apparently I'm fine with buying unreasonably priced things so there's that...

Not yet and this is the reason why I got the first box. I REALLY wanted that Shorter album and liked the other choices and really grew to like the Ambrose Akinmusire album which is only available on vinyl through the Anthology for now. We were told that no Tone Poet or BN80th pressings were imminent of any of the records that VMP selected. If you tried to buy all AAA pressings of the BN anthology choices, I don't think you could do so anywhere near the price we paid for it. But audiophile jazz/BN records are another beast in itself price-wise. I thought the BN was relatively fairly priced when you compare what you would have to pay to get these as either early copies or even the AP pressings of the records. For this new box, I don't think I would ever spend $38 or whatever the price is on a Badu record that can be purchased for $12 on discogs brand new right now...and I love Erykah Badu.

Montara did get a repress already on Elemental which is not a grey market label and officially licenses BN catalogue but not a KVG remaster. I could be wrong but as far as VMP is concerned, I think the only records that haven't gotten a wider release later on out of older ROTMs so far are Fiona and Biggie with the samples but I could have sworn Biggie was getting a repress somewhere else...

I don't think that not selling out for their second edition is reason to close shop on Anthology. Reason to reassess, of course. I assure you that a business that requires a sell our of their product to make a profit is not a model for success. They probably start making a profit at a certain amount of product sold the rest is just icing on the cake.
