Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Attica Blues? Actually a lot of the classics. Am I right on this?
Oh yes--Miles is another one too now that I think about it more with Classics (I was a late adopter of Classics which is now my favorite track). Fiona and Biggie were the only two I could remember off the top of my head that are super hard to find original analogue copies of. VMP even repressed Attica Blues themselves and it popped back up in the store. But others, like...Al Green "Call Me" sounds fantastic in the VMP press, but that's also an album you can buy an OG copy for at a lot of record stores for under $10...and Now-Again seems to repress a lot of the "VMP exclusives" down the line.

Not yet and this is the reason why I got the first box. I REALLY wanted that Shorter album and liked the other choices and really grew to like the Ambrose Akinmusire album which is only available on vinyl through the Anthology for now. We were told that no Tone Poet or BN80th pressings were imminent of any of the records that VMP selected. If you tried to buy all AAA pressings of the BN anthology choices, I don't think you could do so anywhere near the price we paid for it. But audiophile jazz/BN records are another beast in itself price-wise. I thought the BN was relatively fairly priced when you compare what you would have to pay to get these as either early copies or even the AP pressings of the records. For this new box, I don't think I would ever spend $38 or whatever the price is on a Badu record that can be purchased for $12 on discogs brand new right now...and I love Erykah Badu.

Montara did get a repress already on Elemental which is not a grey market label and officially licenses BN catalogue but not a KVG remaster. I could be wrong but as far as VMP is concerned, I think the only records that haven't gotten a wider release later on out of older ROTMs so far are Fiona and Biggie with the samples but I could have sworn Biggie was getting a repress somewhere else...

Ah, yeah I totally agree with your reasoning on all of the points. But I guess if you really want good copies of all 8 of these records then the box is the way to go. I really doubt these RKS cuts will be floating around outside of the box, but you never know. IMO, Motown originals largely suck even on the rare occasion you can find silent players, and the 80s reissues are better but still not amazing, especially considering the stereo was preferred on that series, so I would love it if these got separate releases. But yes, for me there aren't enough ringers in the box to go for it, especially since only two of the LPs would be on my "must haves" list.

For VMP that hasn't seen re-release since, I think the exclusivity is really in the cut / mastering. Outside of Demon Days i can't really think of a record that VMP commissioned a quality cut for that the label reused the same exact stampers. That's why I have little to no interest in lots of their DMM GZ crap, anyone could release that easily, and exceed it with minimal investment.

VMP have an interesting choice to make now - do we increase price. Assuming not now sold out, I expect it will go up in price for a short time to justify the early access offer....Then return to normal - let’s face it anyone can get cheaper price so it’s a completely bollox marketing ploy. Which annoys me enough not to consider just for that reason.

Yea all fair points too. I wanna say some of the Now-Again records got a re-release? Or maybe VMP just gave them some copies to sell. But can't entirely remember.

It seems that Now Again give them an exclusivity window with fancy colors. NA is usually black vinyl. I wounder how much money and resources go into deciding on a color?

I’m pretty sure Mesfin and Wells Fargo have never been released in any form other than VMP

Not a ton haha. VMP's in-house designer seems to make most of the color choices and I can't imagine it's very hard to look at an album cover and say "this one should be green" haha.

Serious question: did people like Mesfin? I thought it sounded like mediocre music played in a fishbowl...

I did, but I'm used to African music that isn't recorded or kept in the best condition.
I thought Wells Fargo was less listenable (out of tune vocals). I still like it though.
