Vinyl Me Please Anthology

Give it a swerve. It'll be fine. They're just records... A massively, massively underwhelming set of records.
Yeah, I think I’ll have to pass unfortunately! 🥺

I only really care for Maiden Voyage, Future Shock and The Piano and VSOP to be honest!

I’ve got great sounding pressings of Takin’ Off and Headhunters and don’t really care for those last two albums in there.....

I have to be honest that fusion jazz isn't my thing. For me, most of the Herbie stuff I want is available already as Tone Poets and AP pressings.

Honestly, I don't think this is a weak selection at all. I have read his autobiography a couple of times now and this selection is definitely in-line with what he mentions as being impactful albums to him. The only one I didnt expect was 1+1 or the piano, but thats not a bad thing as Herbie and Wayne Shorter go hand in hand.

Takin Off was his debut album.
Maiden Voyage was one which he cites as his best album.
Headhunters is arguably the crowning achievement in his fusion experiments.
Live Under The Night Sky brings together an all star line-up which he had been playing with off and on for years (Wayne Shorter, Tony Williams, Ron Carter, and Freddie Hubbard).
The Piano was one of his most successful Japanese only releases (im unfamiliar with it, this is from wiki).
Future Shock went platinum and the video for Rockit won numerous awards to make it the most successful of the era.
1+1 is a collaboration with his life long friend Wayne Shorter.
River: The Joni Letters won a grammy and he mentions it in his book as being one of his greatest honours.

Quick, someone convince me to not get this!!!!

edit: I do wish one of these was switched out for Mwandishi though. He claims his best ever performance was in that band and they would play the tape over and over again for inspiration until it was lost.

Anybody get the email for this yet? I know grateful dead went up shortly after pre-order time....was hoping not the case here.

And honestly Im cool with the album selection. I only have 4 Herbie albums and Takin off is the only repeat for me. As good as the BN80 sounds Im sure this will be better and Ill sell the older one on discogs.

It can't be miles off what a record cleaning machine would set you back so look at it this way... You're entire collection will get to sound better because you skipped on it.

Yeah the ones I'm really hoping for are Fat Albert Rotunda through Directstep era Herbie. 1969–1975 or so especially. I know we're inevitably gonna get a Blue Note Herbie album and at least one from the 80s and one from the last 20 years or so, but I hope they go heavy on the Fusion-era with Sextant, Mwandishi, Thrust, Head Hunters, etc

Yeah, I wanted them to go heavy on the Fusion-era too, but they didn’t unfortunately! I wish Herbie Hancock didn’t work with VMP in selecting which records should be in this Boxset to be honest.

They uh.... they did not. See above.

So how are y’all feeling now?

I guess there was always going to be some that were missed out though. Personally, I would have prefered Empryean Isles over Maiden Voyage and Mwandishi over The Piano. Im not familiar with 1+1 but it looks to have never been on vinyl before.
And for Takin’ Off to never have been selected as the BlueNote80 pressing for that sounds great! Like do you think there would be even much of a sound quality difference with the Takin’ Off pressing that’s in this Boxset?
