12 pages. Saddle stapled. Sloppy writing. This is a damn joke. As much as we paid for this, they couldn't have actually done a hardbound pressing? I've gotten hardbackbooks from Numero for $60 sets.
I've stopped tagging them anytime I play a VMP album. I have no desire to give them free publicity and wouldn't recommend them to anyone. My own little mini "fuck you" to them.Nah! I just don’t get why everyone still gives a fuck. We’ve left the past behind and moved onto a brighter future yet for some reason want to reminisce nostalgically about the guy back home who repeatedly punched people in the face for no reason...
Also I’m not for giving them any more free advertising/fomo build up space than we give any other club!
lol they seriously saddle stitched it? poetry chapbooks by tiny indie presses look like that and usually cost $4... I don't know why I'm surprised. I expected something decent and glossy but is that just regular cardstock? Just got my records today so I haven't seen the book yet.
I honestly expected more. Never again, VMPThe booklet is pretty shitty. I've caught about 10 typos in it so far. I don't know anything about the picture history so I won't comment on that. But compared to some of the other books I have from high end box sets (anything Numero/the Bowie boxes) it's definitely a mediocre/sub mediocre presentation.
Yup, you could do this exact same printing on Lulu for cheap. Regular cardstock.
Reading through the last couple pages has me worried. Were they sending out replacement Schizophrenia albums to everyone automatically? Or did I need to request one? I thought it was the former, but I haven't received a replacement yet.
If it's like their previous efforts they likely just scanned an earlier press or CD release without fixing any of the pertinent info.Reading through the last couple pages has me worried. Also, were these last two albums also remastered by Kevin Grey? Because the Bobby Hutcherson on lists someone else on the back (assuming whomever originally mastered it. I'm back at work and can't check it right now).
Audio quality is top notch. We actually knew which ones were mono and stereo (that was never given incorrectly) but the label on Horace was wrong (stereo instead of mono) and the cover for Lou is the mono instead of the stereo. Yeah, everything outside of the actual music has had several issues. They said they had multiple people look at it but my guess is most people at VMP are overworked because they keep adding projects but not staff so how closely did/could they examine it.I haven't really posted on here because I missed the chance to sign up. In all honestly I was super excited for the announcement of this, especially considering that im a huge Blue Note fan. I was on holiday abroad during the time of release and added an alarm to sign up but unfortunately it took about 5 hours from the release time for me to acquire internet, at which point it was sold out. I was really, really gutted for a long time actually and even asked VMP to add me to a waiting list in case someone dropped out.
This thread has served as a way of me looking in and, in a harsh kind of way, has kind of made me feel less annoyed that I missed out. At times like this its worth taking note that people are more likely to comment when they have issues over praises, but even still it seems to have been a pretty poor execution from VMP. Again, from an outsiders perspective (correct me if im wrong) it seems to be that the main issues have been the presentation/package over the audio quality, and that a real shame as things like low quality source images, and incorrect mono/stereo claims should NEVER have happened as its such an easy thing to check. I work in a field where designs are sent to clients and every drawing that gets released HAS to be checked by someone else before we can send it out. When it comes to releasing a presentation, each individual page will have been updated, checked, and signed off by the design team off approx 3-4 people at least 2-3 times in total. And this is without any of us having any training in 'graphic design', its just using common sense. So as far as im concerned VMP should have picked up on these easy wins (the reason im focusing on this is because things like the printing of low quality source images and incorrect info has been a reoccurring VMP issue - e.g. Blossom Dearie, UGK, etc).
Anyway, this wasn't meant to be a rant when I first started, I just find it incredibly annoying that such a fantastic concept has been executed so poorly, and genuinely feel for you guys that have been experiencing these blunders.
I wish I could say I'm surprised but their editorial operation has been a joke as long as I've known about them. For all your sakes, though, I was hoping that for their premium product, at least, they would put some more effort in.The booklet is pretty shitty. I've caught about 10 typos in it so far. So now that the booklets have arrived and the verdict on the entire set is out, what do y’all say we send them a copy of the Dylan box that I paid <$150 as a gift with a note saying something along the lines of “This is what competence looks like.”
A couple people have had shipping damage to the outer box, and one person had a duplicate record, but those are the only issues I've seen.I thought there were people sending these back too?
There were a couple of shipping damages and I think one wrong record in the box, but the box itself is high quality, faithfully reproduced jackets, has a nice book, etc. in other words, it was put together by folks who actually cared about the end product.I thought there were people sending these back too?
I have Grammarly on my computer (the free version) seems a program like that (paid option) would go a long way for them. I have basically given up on reading most of their stuff.I wish I could say I'm surprised but their editorial operation has been a joke as long as I've known about them. around your marrow."
I mean, I'm pretty sure they have a copy editor on staff. I'm just...not sure what s/he does.I have Grammarly on my computer (the free version) seems a program like that (paid option) would go a long way for them. I have basically given up on reading most of their stuff.
