Vinyl Me Please Classics

Possibly unpopular opinion but I really dislike how they're repressing old stuff.
I really like that they’re doing it! I was so happy to see how happy so much people were with the Blossom Dearie and Handsome Boy Modelling School represses, especially as I love spinning them two records! 👌

I think VMP doing represses is awesome! I’m definitely for them doing represses! ✅

I’m so happy they are doing John Lee Hooker! That Classics ROTM was released 3 years ago, and so much people want it, so I think it’s absolutely perfect they’re depressing it! They sold out of all the other Classics ROTM’s they represses last year; Alice Coltrane, Archie Shepp & Max Roach! 😄

Is it just a value/collecting rationale that turns you off to it? I think it is disingenuous of VMP to act as though these are limited and drive up FOMO upon the initial release but beyond that I think it is usually better that music be available to more fans when possible. Collectability is fluid.

It's 100% going back on what was advertised as a limited item. Sorry @NathanRicaud but I don't think a company should sell something as limited then say oh well it's popular never mind we'll make more. Imagine if Mondo did that? If someone wants the album bad enough they can always buy it on the secondary market.

An example would be the VMP War on Drugs. Instead of buying the black pressing I used that $20 as the starting point. Then when I wanted to impulse buy an album I used that money and added it to the savings. In a few weeks I bought it for the secondary prices.

I don't expect or want VMP to press more. It's advertised as limited. It should be kept as such.

That’s true! I guess VMP do push the idea that it’s limited, but not really. That’s more store exclusives that get advertised as being more limited. If it was store exclusives getting repressed, it would be a totally different case in my opinion. Records of the Month are very celebrated, and maybe that can come across as being limited. It’s a VMP exclusive, yes, but VMP don’t promote the Classics or Essentials etc as being limited to 20,000 copies or 4,000 copies etc.

Records of the Month are a big thing! It’s usually something VMP exclusively press and has extra background information etc on why it was picked.

Store exclusives on the other hand are nowhere as big as a ‘Record of the Month’. They aren’t archived or searchable upon the VMP store tabs etc

VMP repressing ROTM’s is a great thing! If it was store exclusives, then I would understand the frustration.

I get this whole stance but I also really do not. Why are we getting triggered at other people’s happiness? Like yeah, they ended up pressing some more copies for members only. Like idk about you but I collect music to listen to it and enjoy it, not to geek out over it’s lack of availability and resale value. This to me I can never not see as anything more than a weird form of collectors greed, it made me so happy to see all the forum members here that originally missed out on Blossom Dearie finally nab it AND save some cash!

I say put numbers on every single copy they sell of an initial print-run. Then, don't number the represses. That should serve both the people that want a collectible item, and the people that just want a good pressing of the music. If the value goes down because of the represses I'm okay with that. In fact, I prefer that. Haha.

I feel like some of the issue might have been VMP’s statements in the early days of those tracks as being limited. I looked for those representations last night but with the forum no longer existing, I didn’t turn anything like that up. But I remember this topic coming up before when multiple people got mad when Archie Shepp got a repress. I also remember statements that the RHH (or classic) track was going to be limited to 5000 and never increased, really stoking the FOMO.

So, it seems like what happened is VMP advertised new tracks as limited editions, then later abandoned that business model, THEN went back and repressed the earlier records released under that old business model.

I can see why people are unhappy with that. I think it would have been better received had they done something slightly different with later represses, like color them or something.

There's almost always some kind of repress/reissue and even in relatively large numbers, the high quality ones retain value unless it is an album nobody wants. Just look at the Beatles mono reissues. Can't even imagine how many of those were pressed.

Worrying about pressing quantity (especially when it is unlisted as in this case) is just setting yourself up to be disappointed. If that is in your top reasons to buy something you are going to be disappointed in the vinyl world relatively frequently. Comes off a lot more selfish than just being happy more people have access to a good pressing (or any pressing). But, if that's not what you're in it for, all power to you and good luck.

With all the QC issues in vinyl pressings nowadays, I vastly prefer everything to be more widely available. I have multiple super limited vinyl pressings that have various defects, but I have no way of ever getting a better copy unless I want to roll the dice on the secondary market.

As someone that is in this hobby for the love of the music and the vinyl listening experience, I detest limited runs.

I have a general question.
I am currently signed up in the Essentials group. If next month I swap out the Buena Vista album for the Classics title, does that mean I am now a Classic member? Thus, come September I would need to swap back to Essentials to get the Spiritualized album?

Storf was very clear at the time that Classics records were going to be pressed once, and that was it. I was just a Crate member, and they initially only allowed Essentials subscribers to get Classics by adding it as a second sub, so I had to track down the first half-dozen or so records on Discogs/eBay, and then a few more when they belatedly added remaining copies to the store.

I don't begrudge those who missed out and want the records now, and I'm also completely unsurprised that VMP said one thing and is now doing another.

The thing was that originally the Classics track was listed as limited. That's my issue. It's fine if they're not limited moving forward but they shouldn't change previously sold things. It's the princaple of the matter for me.

Touched on it above. I'm not triggered at other people's happiness. It's a great album. I'm happy for those that get to buy it. I'm unhappy that VMP advertised something as limited, charged a premium because of it, and now are saying well it's popular so lets make more (and probably charge an even higher premium). It's not collectors greed it's wanting a company to stand by their word.
