Vinyl Me Please Classics

Not exactly the most difficult album to track down
True! I just wanted Ohio Players’ “Honey” to receive the VMP Classics treatment! However, I would be just as happy for Earth, Wind & Fire’s “Spirit” to receive the Classics treatment as it’s a spectacular album! 🌍🌎💨💨🔥🔥

I’m looking really forward to the 3rd clue, as there’s still many possibilities as to what the Classics ROTM could be! 🙇‍♂️

There are 169 original copies of Spirit for sale on Discogs, median sold price is $4.50. There are 142 original copies of Gratitude for sale on Discogs, median sold price $5.93. Just saying.
The real question is what is the quality of the vinyl and sleeve

How much is the price of A VG/VG+ copy, since that seems like the minimum quality if you are buying used

People don't buy a bunch of bad condition used copies on Discogs usually, so I find that the median price is generally representative of a fair price on a solid VG+/VG+ copy. There are some NM ones for under $10 as well. You can usually get a better deal on eBay if you are willing to wait.

doesn't this argument about the discogs price happen EVERY time there is a VMP release

it feels like its not even about the prices and more just "VMP bad so a reissue is bad"

I don't remember it happening for De La Soul or Queens of the Stone Age. Probably won't happen for Spiritualized. Obviously, they can't all be white whales but some of the recent picks are confusingly unnecessary.

It's just when they pick, or when popular guesses point to them picking, bargain bin albums. I have two copies of Gratitude that I didn't pay for. Every record store has plenty more, if they haven't turned them away. It's not a bad album, but for people who are cool with buying used or don't feel the need for an audiophile editon over their original, they would rather VMP chose something else. For purely selfish reasons of course!

not everyone wants a first pressing of an album especially when its hard finding a first pressing from the original country of origin for a good price and it can be very difficult, especially when its a more independent or smaller label stuff (i tried it for yoko ono, captain beefheart, peter brotzman, and glenn branca and all of them were way more expensive than just getting a good reissue)

what would you rather have.. not every single release can be a super rare white whale

You're right, but on the flip side, none of the releases have to be bargain bin staples either!

The thing about bargain albums is that if I really wanted it, I'd already have picked it up for cheap, (or in this case, unwittingly picked up two) so it's hard for me to get excited about it when it is one I haven't cared enough about to pick up.

This one isn't hard to find a good first pressing of. That's why I posted the discogs stats. You are also right that not everyone wants used. There's a big market in the audiophile world of remastering dad-rock albums that you can get for cheap. I don't have a problem with that, just isn't for me.

If it ends up being EWF and anyone is happy about that, I'll be happy for them! I can still say I wish it was something else though.

i think the reason they do bargain bin albums is because they need to make money to get to those grails, the rights to spiritualized or buena vista or phrenology were probably very expensive and they have to recoup the cost with slightly less expensive products that they can claim have the first reissue in a long time and get it done knowing it will sell solidly...

i am also very tsundere about this because i dunno if i'll like the hip hop ROTM and need something to swap BVSC for

also you never answered the question of what would YOU have wanted for a classics ROTM

I was super happy for Sahara, Aretha, and Otis this year, so don't get the impression that I always feel this way about their picks.

I could list a ton of things that I want good reissues of that I want for Classics.

Off the top of my head, for 70s funk, a top tier P-Funk album, Curtis Mayfield, The Meters. That Black Heat album seems like it would be great, I hadn't heard of it. Any afrobeat or afro funk would be awesome, but unlikely.

I just discovered I missed the Lee Moses reissue a few years back and should get it.

If you're talking about the Lee Moses "How Much Longer Must I Wait?" Plaid Room reissue, it's still available on the Colemine records site: LEE MOSES - How Much Longer Must I Wait? [Red/Cream Swirl Vinyl]

I got the Grant Green Sunday Mornin' on there too, even though it shows as sold out on the Plaid Room site.

I was actually referring to the Time and Place reissue, but I'll have to check that out, thanks.

Anyone have that Time and Place reissue? Looks like a Golden cut and RTI press.

I have the 2019 Plaid Room exclusive as well. It sounds pretty good but I don’t think it was all recorded super well. I don’t think this one was pressed at RTI like the 2016 but I’m not sure.
