Vinyl Me Please Classics

Maybe we will get Mahavishnu Orchestra for the jazz fusion ROTM! 👀🙏😱
That’d be pretty sweet. I could also see something like Cannonball Adderley’s “Phenix.” Not terribly popular when it came out in 1975 but a great record and hasn’t been repressed since it’s 1975 release. Would also be on-par with VMPs Classics trend recently since Rolling Stone Jazz Review gave it one star lol

If we’re getting a “string of jazz releases that are very dissimilar” I’m hoping we’ll get a big band album and something along the lines of 70s jazz fusion.

The first thing that popped into my head is the 1:00 Lab Band from '75. Lyle Mays was featured as composer and performer on that.
On the one hand, it's college jazz. On the other, it's the only Grammy-nominated college jazz band I can think of.

The magazine article on why they chose this album is one of the laziest most uninspired pieces of writing I’ve read from a professional journalist maybe ever.
Hoping they don’t pick a great free jazz or fusion album. I’m not going to resubscribe at these prices, but I am bummed I’m not getting Rollins or GFK
I think one of the problems for Storf is that he is supposed to to at least 3 jobs that were full time jobs if you do them with the necessary care and effort: 1. Editorial director and writer for the website and magazine including the rotm articles ; 2. Curating classics and the classic booklets 3. Anthologies and the extra content.
It's probably hard for him to step down and focus for ego as well as these are obviously all dream jobs for him. But if they would not just do these things as cheap as possible leadership would actually step in and divide those jobs. Storf is no Amanda Petrusich but i bet he would get better things out with more care and editing

The only person that can handle that many Dream Jobs is Buckaroo Bonzai and that ain't Storf...he should pick a lane and focus on doing that one well, then let VMP hire people with actual experience and acumen to run the others.

Yeah, this is the impression I get - VMP is either unwilling or can't afford to hire more people, so he's overloaded. Pretty standard for companies to stretch employees thin when finances aren't great, people quit or are laid off, or whatever the case may be.

It really was, I emailed to make sure it wasn't an accident and they said it was sent on purpose. They transferred their data or something and my original order had gone missing. Really cool of them to send it, I prefer it to the record I actually bought!

Hope this is good, I just ordered a copy along with 2 albums from the J Jazz series of a guy on Discogs. Apparently he has links with BBE, although not free, seemed to be pretty cheap. Worked out at about £70 in total.

I should really listen to more albums before I buy them :)

The Everything You Need to Know About... article is a rough read, but I totally agree with Storf that Freedom Suite is "semi-overlooked when compared to his other albums". To steal some of @NathanRicaud 's hyperbole: This album is a 10/10!!🎷
Absolutely agreed and great enough to
Make me forget about how much money I’m spending for it and Fishscale. 🤦‍♂️

After spending a lot of money on RSD, I decided to drop this track for the first time since its inception. Part of the thinking was that I would probably be able to buy Freedom Suite at almost the same cost a few weeks later ($34 instead of $33), even though I am sure VMP will figure this out soon and either raise the prices of the individual offerings or print fewer copies to manipulate FOMO.

We will see how this works out for them.. their gamble may pay off, $23 was a bargain for some of their titles..

Yes, a lot of my Classics titles I would have easily spent $33 on. There's been too few recently, but I think this Sonny Rollins will be worth it.

Though this ensures that I won't be a Classics completion, since there's no way I'd spend $33 on the titles I'm missing.

You hit on the weird part about the price increase. They are sitting on a ton of dead inventory. I think those sales they have once in a while help clear things out, but aside from that I think many will be in the same boat as you. Some of those albums weren't even worth the $23 to swap to, no way in hell am I dropping $33 on most of them.

The cynical part of me says the next 'sale' will have them selling a lot of those same records for the 'low low price of $28!'.

First time spinning the Bar-Kays tonight. Regardless of the music itself, you have to give it to them for putting out a fantastic pressing, the sound is incredible. I never listened to the other Bar-Kays release and this is the first time I am hearing them, but I actually really enjoyed it. It wont be my most spun classics, but it will definitely get played.
