Vinyl Me Please Classics

Could be Truck Turner by Isaac Hayes for January. Then a Stax/Volt for February and Motown for March. But no idea what Motown album fits the clues.
Isaac Hayes wouldn’t surprise me at all. Maybe they can bundle the movie in too! Haha! Seems like a weird choice and it’s a double LP soundtrack... I’d have to think hard about picking it up if it’s that album.

If it is Stax/Volt for February, we have two candidates: Frederick Knight's I've Been Lonely for So Long and the self-titled album by The MG's.

(I forgot the solo artist clue. If it is Hayes for January, it is likely Frederick Knight for February.)

Kind of surprised that there are no women candidates for any of the three. It’s not a huge deal but kind of disappointing. There hasn’t been an album in classics by a woman since Patrice Rushen. Surely there are a great number of fantastic soul albums by women they could have picked. Maybe I’m wrong though.

I agree... surely we need an Etta James, Merry Clayton...

Someone guessed Truck Turner on Twitter, and his response was "No Cigar, my friend", which makes me think it's the Tough Guys Soundtrack. So...

January: Isaac Hayes - Tough Guys
February: Frederick Knight - I've Been Lonely for So Long
March: Something on Motown or Hi Records or Goldwax or?

For March, one possibility is Diana Ross - Diana Ross. Which isn't her 2nd or 3rd album, BUT it is her 2nd self-titled album, AND she had a soundtrack album called Diana! that could be considered her 3rd self-titled album? Idk, at this point I'm grasping at straws.

Tough Guys would be on brand I guess.

The first self-titled album by Dee Dee Bridgewater (1976, Atlantic) is her 2nd, and it is a soul/funk album even though she is a jazz singer. The 2nd or 3rd clue is a problem, but maybe Storf is pointing out that she sang the title track of Roy Ayers' Coffy soundtrack.

My 'Tough Guys' guess on Twitter got a like instead of a 'nope' so I'd be surprised if it doesn't turn out to be that. To be honest, I'd be reasonably happy with it, some really nice stuff on there including big hip hop samples like the Geto Boys. Given a Ryan Smith AAA mastering, I think it could get regular spins.

Yaaaas, I would be happy to welcome more Isaac Hayes to my vinyl collection! I love his music in general; it's so damn sexy! I'm gonna spin some Isaac Hayes' Hot Buttered Soul later tonight; I'm craving some sensual, luxurious, nasty, yearning, smooth music! 🤤

Hi Nathan. I just have this a listen... surely we can get a better Isaac pick than this. It sounds half-baked? Like studio off-cuts.

Wait a minute, this Tough Guys soundtrack is only instrumentals...

I don’t hear any Isaac Hayes vocals on there...😭😭😭

Instrumentals are great though. I would much rather however receive an Isaac Hayes ROTM that contains his vocals on there, as I love his smooth, sexy, deep voice!

I’ll be a bit disappointed if Tough Guys is indeed the January Classics ROTM...

The Memphis Symphony Orchestra plays on both Tough Guys and the Albert King album mentioned above. I think we got this one.

For March, Leon Ware's Musical Massage (1976, Gordy) is a strong candidate. The connection to Marvin Gaye's I Want You (co-written and co-produced by Ware) could explain the 2nd not 3rd clue.
