Vinyl Me Please Classics

I think most of the songs on the album sound pretty good, but yeah Wax and Wane sounds bad. It's not your copy, it just be like that. Overall I love this album though.

Cadet was a second rate label that did not do great recording. So...it is what it is, and sounds fantastic given the recording.

Funny how people clamored for this record for ages, then VMP respond to that by doing a top job on it, and still some people complain - I guess who either weren't aware of Cadet's recording history, or who think miracles can happen.

We have this record now in sound that vastly exceeds originals. Be happy!

This is the first Cadet record I own and given VMPs history of botching pressings I think it makes sense to gather clarification around audible distortion yada yada yada, this has immediately become one of my favorite albums in the collection, so not complaining as much as being thorough to ensure I got what I paid for

I'm certainly not complaining that VMP reissued the record, I think their curation is pretty admirable and their access is verging on incredible - I'm just stating the fact that it sounds bad. Its a rad record, but and this is the key point, there are many, many people out there (discogs, SHF, etc) who are saying this is a good sounding record. and it is not. full stop.

there is a vicious cycle of FOMO, mutual admiration societies and allowances for defects that are seemingly used to justify discogs values for what are expensive records and it just kinda bugs me.

Completely agree. Like I said, Cadet was a second tier label at best - a budget label. Dorothy Ashby found a home there, and let's be honest - she would not have on a bigger label. I don't expect a Cadet recording to be excellent, and anyone who says this recording is a masterpiece of the recording art is just dumb. But...the VMP sounds way better than an original, and a superb job was done taking a sonic turd and making it into something that sounds, well...not bad. For what it is.

I never believe a word on Discogs. Comments thereare either from flippers (pimping a record up) or the same tired group who seem to have issues with every pressing. SHF is proof that inbreeding is dangerous. Lack of genetic diversity through inbreeding leads to mindless group-think.

I hear ya...and really the only reason to own any Cadet pressings is that there are some very funky sessions, over the years I've gotten rid of nearly all of mine (including an Ashby that looked decent enough but was so noisy it was nearly unplayable)

I think there are many recordings where the respect of a AAA reissue makes sense (TPs just the most recent example) but if through some digital magic they could make this sonic turd sound better, I'm all for it - better sound over marketing any day for me. And its not like Dorothy sounded bad when she was playing the record live - it's the dude who recorded it, the shitty studio they used, the crappy tape its on, etc..

this desire for 'authenticity' and 'whats on the master tape' is bullshit if it still sounds bad.

also I see your rig and I imagine it is quite revealing -

and what I believe is that many people don't realize that the more revealing your rig is the fewer records that truly sound great. It's why audiophiles drool over the same set of records - some of them are great, some less so...

anywho..this is the hard part for me, because my rig is also very revealing, I try to be about the music (the ashby record is a good example) but I struggle because I know how good records can sound.

its a frustrating hobby, but i'm old.

I wouldnt say my rig is revealing, more forgiving actually - my usual cartridge is pretty mellow, although detailed. Very few records on my setup sound really bad. A lot sound spectacular.
I would rather have the Dorothy Ashby over buying another retread of Kind of Blue.
Music is a voyage of discovery. When it becomes a search for ultimate sonics, much as I like great sound, it easily turns into a fetish.

I also get frustrated with the vinyl hobby but I do love it!!! I’m looking forward to falling more in love with the vinyl format and in general, the hobby, in the future!!! 😊📦🤘🥁🎹🪘🎷🎸🎻🕺

I really wish I had some vinyl nerd friends in person! I don’t really want any friends at the moment because I like to focus on the friends I have and my family whilst also having time to myself! Right now, I feel like I’m not balancing my time right and haven’t been spinning much vinyl at all/having time to myself! However, I would always be down to make a close vinyl friend in person because I love this hobby so much and I just know my love for vinyl and sound systems would be elevated!!! 😁😍💥🎼🎯📈

Also, look what just arrived at my parents today and I cannot wait to spin it tonight!!! ♥️

I won't challenge the issues with recording quality. But just to balance out all the Cadet bashing going on, there's a ton of fantastic actual music on the label if your audiophile setups don't melt upon the needle touching such filthy vinyl ;):

Terry Callier - What Color Is Love
Marlena Shaw - The Spice Of Life
Eddie Fisher - Eddie Fisher & The Next One Hundred Years
Dorothy Ashby - Rubaiyat
Dorothy Ashby - Afro-Harping
Dorothy Ashby - Dorothy's Harp
Phil Upchurch - Upchurch
Etta James - Tell Mama
Odell Brown Plays Otis Redding

And if we want to extend to Cadet Concept:
Muddy Waters - Electric Mud
Rotary Connection - S/T
Howlin' Wolf - The Howlin' Wolf Album

I'm probably forgetting a few, but that's the best of it. I'd take crummy pressings of any of the above over a lot of the stuff that actually gets audiophile treatment. And there's a bunch of other good stuff on the label. The Dells, Ramsey Lewis, other albums from artists on the list above. Basically anything Charles Stepney was involved in. Richard Evans too. Also a fun fact: before EW&F, Maurice White was the drummer for Ramsey Lewis on his Cadet albums, and also a session drummer for Chess/Cadet.

I've got a recent reissue of Terry Callier's "What Color Is Love" and it also sounds fantastic. Definitely recommend it.

FWIW, I thought my Rubaiyat sounded great. It's not a real audiophile release due to the recording, but I had no complaints when I listened to it. Granted, it is a not so great recording in terms of quality, but it beats a fair amount of other vinyl pressings I have. It is not on the level of my mofi/APs, but it is not bad by any means.

Is that the MOV pressing? I keep going back and forth on that one. They use digital sources but do a good job, I just find MOV pressings can sound a bit sharp sometimes

No it's not the MOV pressing. It's this one here:

grabbed it on a udiscover sale for about $10.

great list...and I agree, the music can be amazing..that Terry callier record is incredible...and also agree that lots of audiophile stuff is put out there so audiophiles can 'trainspot' the fingers striking the keys or the spittle coming out of Miles' trumpet or some other nonsense...

im just at the place where the discovery is less of it (I have too many records and im old) and I know how incredible records can sound, so I really only want those records that sing on my system

I listened to The Rubàiyàt of Dorothy Ashby last night and I was blown away by the record! It’s absolutely an enchanting, mystical masterpiece! Very happy with the pressing despite the recording quality on the album being low!

I would absolutely love for VMP to make Terry Callier’s “What Color Is Love” a Classics ROTM! I really want that album to get the AAA, remastered by Ryan Smith and pressed at QRP on 180g vinyl treatment!!! Fingers crossed VMP do it soon! “What Color Is Love” is a truly moody, stunning, rich album!
