Vinyl Me Please Classics

musically, super cool...tons of breaks and other cool sounds, but this is very typical of Cadet records...they just don't sound great.

VMP gets credit here and I'm sure Ryan did his best, but this just is not a great record SQ wise.
Yeah it’s not really up to par SQ wise when compared some of the other AAA classics. But it still sounds really good and this is likely the best it will ever sound.

agree, this is probably as good as it gets, but IMO it doesn't sound good, it sounds like it was recorded in a tunnel with reverb... if you're into Dorothy ashby but aren't looking to spend tons, there is a more than decent sounding Japanese issue of Hip Harp from the mid 90's

There are definitely a couple of tracks that sound less than good. I appreciate the recommendation!

Just received mine as well @Mather , loving it so far. This is one of the most modern sounding old records I’ve ever listened to, almost feels like you’re about get dropped into a hip hop record in the early moments of track one, and just when you think you know where the records going to take you she tries out some other different idea. Such an impressive piece of music. image.jpg

It took me a minute but I recognized where I heard that opening intro from before:

Nonsense! I’m pretty sure I shared this photo when I first joined, this was my first rig from when I first started collecting 4 years ago. ATLP 60 with Bluetooth plugged into a JBL Charge 3. It’s what made me fall in love with this hobby!BD7D206D-4D5B-4240-871B-DE2A45014150.jpeg

love love love that record and i had forgotten all about it -- it was just something i downloaded whenever it came out, at least 10 or 12 years ago, and the computer i was using then just bit it and i never replaced my downloaded copy because i had forgotten the name of the group, thank you for posting this!

Does anyone else’s Dorothy Ashby sound like hot garbage during Wax and Wane. Wondering if it’s the recording or worth getting a replacement for

I don't have my copy yet, so can't confirm, but I have seen a lot of folks talk about the recording not being so great and a couple of tracks not sounding awesome. But pretty much across the board I've seen it attributed to the recording, not the remastering/pressing.

Define "hot garbage"? I'm not home right now but there was definitely a track on the first side that had some discoloration and markings on it, I only got a couple light pops as a result but I think that might have been that track. Perhaps it's a widespread thing and much worse on some other copies.

it's the recording...spend some time with the Cadet catalog and you'll notice a pattern.
but after a wet clean, the vinyl was silent on my copy.

Yeah I saw that as well so when I heard it I attributed it to the recording but damn, sounds like she’s singing in a subway tunnel for a couple passes lol. I’ll try and take a vid later

Probably my most listened to album of 2007. It was criminally slept on.

yeah, been saying that since I received mine. the whole recording is a mess, the whole AAA thing is a waste here as I'd love the record to sound better and I don't care what they have to do make it sound better (plangent process, DSP, whatever.

the music is so dope, it deserves better

Oh thaaaat, yeah that's just the recording. I don't think there's really much to be done about it. Except for a couple tracks mine sounds better than I expected considering the source.
