Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Announcing the next 3 is to lock people in for 3 records when they probably only want 1 (Songs for the Deaf). It's 100% a FOMO tactic, but also a business tactic so I can't fault them for that. They want to let people know about SftD early to help with demand (and shift blame from them for missing out on said item) but also want to rope customers in for 3-month subs.

Where did he say that? I feel like I've heard mention of it, and I don't doubt at all that he said it (given how effing rude and clueless he was about the forum), but I just don't recall actually seeing it.

That’s a good question. It’s one of those things that I read and can’t remember where I read it, it’s been that long ago...

I’ll try and find where that came from!

It's also the type of thing that no CEO wants to be heard saying (lest it haunt them eternally) but by virtue of their position is supposed to demonstrate at all times. Like, of course he has a fiduciary responsibility not to waste the company's resources on unprofitable projects. Of course you're supposed to reassure your investors and your employees that you're not just goofing around, because as a businessman you're focusing on the business and not letting frivolous distractions get in the way. But man oh man are there better contexts and wordings to express it.

Edit: which is to say that I think there are things to criticize Matt & co. for, but this one is low-hanging fruit, in my view.

Within reason. What it fails to realise, and what has cause a lot of all of our problems with VMP, is that there can be parts of your business that make you no direct money and may even lose you money but their overall contribution to the wider company makes that worthwhile.

I wasn’t a fan of The Soft Bulletin when I first heard it (which was a day or two ago), mostly because of Wayne Coyne’s voice, but it’s been growing on me the more I’ve listened to it.

I’ve never heard Songs For the Deaf either. I should probably fix that within the next month.

I already have a copy of the Rhino remaster of INLAMTWILY but the details about this pressing so far (AAA, purple & white vinyl, lyric booklet) are making it too good to pass up! I’m excited for these next 3 months!

It is?

Edit: Indeed it is, according to Discogs. I have this copy and there are no CB etchings in the wax though. It does sound quite nice.

I would guess he didn't cut the laquer then unless the Discogs credits are wrong, it looks like Masterdisk cut the lacquer. That's the problem with these wooly terms for mastering. To give a proper picture there are really three descriptors that are used interchangeably by many:

1: "Mastering for vinyl" which is the work of preparing the record from the source to the target format, in this case ripping and EQing the DAT.
2: cutting an actual lacquer or direct-metal-mastering a disc
3: Signal path ie from a digital file, direct from tape etc.

For all we know this VMP pressing could be cut by RKS from files prepared by Bellman. Who know though, as VMP seems to not get the difference between 1-3.

Right, I guess that's what I'm saying. Depending on who the audience for that statement is, and the context in which it's stated the "(within reason)" at the end of Fiedler's thought is plausibly implied. It's only when it gets lifted from its original context and repeated in new ones that what was perhaps understood by the initial audience can no longer be read in by future ones.

Maybe that's more benefit of the doubt than he deserves, I don't know.

No and that’s fair enough. Maybe you’re being more mature than I am in giving him the benefit of the doubt whereas I’m still just angry at the “what would you do with more time” guy and give him no benefit.

I would say this might be the strongest three month run they've ever had. Hard to argue that all three are true "essentials."

Im not knocking them for any of their Essential releases it all very subjective.
But for me this is the poorest year they have had. I only truly love Van Morrison, some id just be hapy to own and roughly half i just dont want.
They may have more power a d reach now but i dont think that has been reflected in picks exciting me.

Of course they do the only Aretha album I have an original Mono of! Might be hard to resist since it will likely be quieter though.
It does suck because there is already a great version of this put out by Rhino.

Sounds like someone needs to A/B the Aretha's and report their findings.

Looking forward to A/B-ing Soft Bulletin and Clouds Taste Metallic with my copies from the Heady Nuggs box set. [I know some people got bad pressings in their boxes, but mine play well.]

The more time question was directed at @gouis who had said something about giving us more time between announcing and forum shutdown. The more time thing was not a well-thought out question but I don’t think he referred to money at all. And it’s weird that it’s morphed to that.

Are those two statements directly connected? I knew the origin of the 'more time' comment; I just always assumed the other thing was a separate quote that I had missed from an interview or something.
The more time and the money comment were not connected. At all.

@Joe Mac wasn't the money comment in an article about Matt and their VC injection?

I like the lips, and I don't mind the color but I'm excited enough for the album.
QOTSA is impressive, and I'm so glad they are turning to Pallas for that pressing.
Aretha is great and I love that it's an AAA remaster.

VMP does a lot of things that annoy me, but as long as these the albums all come out with decent quality than I'm happy.

That sounds about right! I can’t find the source though and that making me doubt myself...

It’s definitely got nothing to do with the more time though. That more time comment just makes me less likely to view other comments by him in a favourable light.

For me it was the “What would you do with more time anyway” comment that really spelled out the ethos of VMP. There were so many better more respectful ways to transfer control of the forum into the hands of the the members who valued the forum than to pull the plug with basically no notice.

The way some people around here came together to get this new forum rolling under the worst conditions was pretty awesome.

So while I have still reluctantly continued on a month by month with ‘classics’ and I may do a rare occasional other exclusive like maybe QOTSA; VMP is now one of the many 21st century EvilCorps that I am forced to buy from when they have the best or only option. Life is sometimes a compromise.

FWIW every new VMP announcement is now filtered with “what other better versions are available and what other vinyl titles might I rather own instead”.

It’s really the feeling I get when I drop the needle down on any VMP release. Loosely translated into “I wish another company would have pressed this instead”.

I'm glad I hadn't been a member long enough to have had any problems or anger when the forum shut down, because I just resubbed with no regrets.
You can resent them and still resub. I am about to do it. Give it time, they will/attempt to fuck ya over at some point. I don’t even mind them all that much now that I understand what they are as a business. It was disappointing at first (because of how they started off) but I don’t expect much now and understand I will sometimes have to give them hell to get to provide the services I am paying for.
