Vinyl Me Please Essentials

Yeah, to be fair they wrote a whole article about how the percentage of people who actually use download codes don’t make the server space worth it for the labels.

I’m not that excited about Phoenix as a choice, but it is also the exact type of album VMP have been criticized for not doing recently
The way they came at people about it on Twitter was real condescending from what I remember even if the info behind it wasn’t.

Never saw the Twitter posts, but don’t doubt it. I do remember for about 2 years whenever a record was announced there was an inevitable “does it come with a download code?”. Which I think led to the article.

What's interesting to me and I haven't seen anyone mention it yet is that with the lesser amount of printed ROTMs (many recent picks are 'sold out'), it means that your swaptions are now even more limited.. and basically limited to previous ROTMs that nobody wanted (hyperbole, but you get the point) ... doesn't that scare future subscribers off or people thinking about renewing?
It's a concern as well, because the exclusives have been selling out quicker over the past few months as well - though the axing of the forum likely will slow down the sellouts on those items. There was a huge drop in their pressing runs for November/December of last year forward.

I said in the old swaptions thread that I don't see swaps really being tenable going forward, Storf said there are no plans to ax it but it may ax itself through no options which was my point

At least in my opinion, Phoenix is to indie pop what Kings Of Leon is to indie rock, or what Mumford & Sons is to indie folk: uninspired pastiche that's inoffensive and mainstream-oriented to the point that it feels like it must be an intentional decision. Will I mind if Phoenix is playing in an Apple commercial on TV? Not at all. Am I ever gonna be in a mood to give Phoenix a spin? Also not at all

for sure, i havent been a subscriber for a long time but i feel im going to run out of swaptions soon.

Yea I actually PIFed my unopened LNT Floating Points white pressing from the label figuring the VMP would have one since I ended up getting both. Then when I opened the VMP one, didn’t see any download codes.

I just opened mine and you're right there's none in there. I just emailed LateNightTales asking for the digital files. If I don't hear back from them later this week I guess I'll open the white edition they sent me by accident.

Please update if they send you a digital link

Def gonna swap this one. It’s good, but def not interesting enough for me. Just regular indie background kinda music. Maybe good for a spin or two but mine would gather dust.

Instead I’m gonna catch up on any swaptions. TI for sure bc I listened to that one night kinda wasted and realized I needed it. It’s still too long but gonna snag it before it’s gone. Might add classics and pick up another swap too. Gonna catch up on them and then cut down on VMP...maybe 1-2 month instead of my usual 3-8

I mean, couldn't you just pick up a black vinyl copy for half the price? There is certainly no real remaster that it could benefit from.

Eh depends where you are in the world. The OG US was cut at NRP, who usually suck IME, and pressed at United who suck even more. I’ve never bought this album on vinyl for that reason, and a VMP version would likely be better unless they do an in-house cut.

The standard Euro copy was cut at the exchange though, by the same engineer who did the digital master. Hard to get much better than that, a dedicated master by the main engineer.

I’ll guess VMP does something with minimal benefit like 45rpm or half speed, and messes with the art for the hell of it. I’ll be looking carefully and possibly swapping.

I think Phoenix deserves more credit than that. Agree on the other two bands. Middle of the road is the worst place to be, and those two bands are some of the most notable offenders.

Man, it might not be for everyone but I fuck with those early career Kings of Leon albums.

If it is Phoenix, I'm wondering if it'll come with The Wolfgang Diaries as the 2nd LP. To my knowledge, it was only in this limited boxset when the album was first released.

Also apologies if this has already been mentioned.

That would be probably the only thing to justify double the going price.

Honestly I don't think they care about justifying price. It makes sense, but I think they just throw a cool splatter color, say the audio is the highest quality ever, and that THIS IS the definitive version of the album. They run many paid social campaigns to get it in front of non-VMP users and people jump in for this.
