As a radio dj I go in for the Dutch pronunciation and as I go to make the second syllable my brain freezes and kinda stutters the way that antilock brakes work?

Duh Shtyle
DUH as in, "Oh, duh, that was stupid." SHTYLE as in the word STYLE, but the H gives it a shh...sound, so shhh, and then the tyle part. It means "The Style". Wow, takes me back to Art History 101 at the University of Chaminade in the early 80's. Go Silverswords!

Pretty standard in Germanic languages when you get s+t, it gives you shhtuh.

Edit: I think this is wrong for Dutch, sorry.

I'm not sure Dutch is the same way, tho.

I think they use sch for SHH sounds.

I will certainly plead ignorance in Dutch, just know it is technically "Germanic." Would love to hear from a native.

That's a lot of research! I saw a Dutch person post that the Google translate version is correct and it is much closer to the English pronunciation of "style" without the shhhh sound, so I'll go with that until I hear different

Yeah. I think more people were Germanizing it rather than Americanizing it with adding the SHH sound.

Thats the wiki article about the art movement after which it’s named. It seems like de steel is roughly the phonetic pronunciation but I’ll obviously bow down to any Dutch members if they shout up!

Nah, it was weird to me, too. Icky Thump released in 2007 and '08 was their last year of touring (I think). By 2009 Jack had announced they were done.

The White Stripes last full shows were 2007. (I bought a poster at the Yukon stop of the Canadian tour.) They also played We are Going to Be Friends on the final Conan show in 2009.

I believe it was 2011 when White announced they had split up. But the point still stands. No way they were the biggest rock band in 2008-09!

I see a few copies of De Stijl on eBay as presale items. How does this follow guidelines?
