Vinyl Me Please Essentials

I saw Black Moon mentioned and I somehow have never heard this name, and I'm generally pretty familiar with a good amount of classic hip hop. What am I missing here?

All said Marauders is my all time fav Tribe album, and up there for my top hip hop albums overall, so I'd be ecstatic to get a good pressing.
You don’t know the album Enta Da Stage!?!?!? 😲😱👀

It’s a classic hip-hop underground album that’s very well known I’d say! The production on the album is exceptional; it’s jazzy yet gritty and has a New York, nocturnal, mellow production that’s colourful! The group chanting had so much swag and attitude; it added so much character, especially against the beatbox and base-heavy production! People always think of A Tribe Called Quest, Digable Planets, The Roofs and Guru as jazz rap, but Enta Da Stage is a very jazz rap album too! Enta Da Stage is just such a masterpiece!!!

I really hope Enta Da Stage is the Essentials ROTM! That, or Midnight Marauders is what I really hope gets the Essentials treatment! They both really need a quality reissue!

I prefer Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) more than Midnight Marauders or Enta Da Stage! Enter The Wu-Tang is one of my favourite hip-hop albums ever!!!
I agree, the only reason I didn't mention 36 Chambers is that I've already got the deluxe box set and the limited MOV pressing of 36 Chambers and honestly, I don't really think a remaster is going to do anything to improve the sound on that one. It's dirty and grimy and uses a zillion low quality samples and sounds like it was recorded in someones basement, but like, that's what it's supposed to sound like. I wouldn't be mad if they gave it a shot. But at this point personally I'd prefer MM or EDS.

I'd take Freestyle Fellowship over anything else mentioned for the 1993 choice but I know that's not going to happen...
Ooooooooooooh yes!!! I mentioned and recommended a few times in the VMP forum for Freestyle Fellowship’s Innercity Griots to be pressed! It was a hip-hop album I always really wanted VMP to do and it’s one of my favourite jazz rap records ever! It’s funky, colourful and very lively! Love the simplicity yet how versatile the album is! Fingers crossed it gets the R&HH ROTM treatment one day!

I know very well the Essentials ROTM won’t be Innercity Griots too, because the album isn’t ‘popular’ enough! But I know the album could be a R&HH ROTM one day!

Exactly how I feel! I have the Music On Vinyl pressing as well for it as while it sounds good, I don’t know if VMP will really improve much upon even a standard pressing as the album’s sound is dirty and contains low quality sampling! Definitely has that basement, claustrophobic sound too! But also, I would be happy if VMP gave it a shot like you said! I’d just much prefer for Enta Da Stage or Midnight Marauders to get the VMP treatment because the available pressings for them just aren’t good and are also compressed!

Oh I know it's not happening but 1993 was a fantastic year for Hip Hop and that album is always one I'll ride for! I'd be all over it if it was a RHH release!

I'm trying to temper my expectations seeing as they're doing a record from 1993 and *might* also be doing one from 1990 and 1996... This is truely my personal sweet spot so trying to not overthink it!

Has 19 Naughty III been mentioned, that seems very much like a VMP record to me?
I’m sorry to sound arrogant, but that album is too mediocre and irrelevant to become an Essentials ROTM! For a R&HH ROTM, it’s possible, but not for an Essentials ROTM! I would genuinely be embarrassed for VMP if 19 Naughty III was an Essentials ROTM! 🙊

Ok, so @BjorgenFjorgen it's probably easiest if I do this instead of @Mather since he actually wants a copy and there's no guarantee he can get two if it sells out fast. I'll keep the Mars Volta and it'll be yours (for the US$33 cost of whatever add-on I'll make for myself). We can talk about it again later (I guess mid-July sometime), but I can also check it for defects and sort that out if anything comes up before flipping it to you.
Turbo, that's so kind of you to offer, thank you! That sounds like it would work great. If on the 26th or whenever of this month when Volta is officially announced I can hop in on a single-month plan, that might still make the most sense, but I really appreciate this.

If you end up signing-up, let me know within the day or two so I make a swap. Otherwise, you're covered.

tbh i dunno if im going to keep a copy of mars volta so I will relisten and If i don't want it (since i am interested in midnight marauders and maybe karen dalton could be a grower)... I'll give it to you for the cost of an add on.... you might not even need that because i have store credit that i can hopefully turn into membership credit and have it cost me only 27 bucks..

For the September essentials pick (Hip-Hop '93), i've decided my money is on Enter the Wu-Tang. I think VMP has been developing a relationship with Wu-Tang for 2 years now (Tical & Fishscale) and they have been working up to this. I'm betting on a 2xLP version that sounds better than previous releases (fewer songs per side, hopefully no inner groove distortion...), but still retains the grimey production of the original.

Don't get me wrong, i'd love Midnight Marauders, but i'd prefer this.

I own both but already both but these are two of my all-time favorites albums. I know 2xLP version of Midnight Marauders would sound significantly better as the 1LP very quiet and is lacking in the low end. I would assume a 2xLP of either would be an improvement.

So yeah I am in either way. If it ends up being anything other than either of these albums I would be supremely disappointed.
