Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Hey man. I’m like the least nerdy engineer. I just play in dirt and make it look like engineering.
LOL, I was just bustin’s yer chops. My Roommate in college and best friend is a mechanical engineer and would always refer to his engineering buds from school as “the enginerds” I always found the portmanteau to be quite clever.

Oh yeah sorry I knew that. Not trying to be confrontational. I still just find it funny when people paint engineers with a broad brush as nerds and I’m just standing in some mud like “yur gonna need to dry this mud out of you want to build your house here”.

It’s an automated reply but one I hadn’t seen before. So I guess stuff is still getting held back if you also include a pre-order and I guess they have to manually free them up if you don’t want to wait for them to ship.

I still haven’t gotten anything to ship yet but hopefully I’ll start seeing movement in the next few days. I’m most worried about Pet Sounds as that sold out in the time I had been waiting for my copy to go out.

I'm just checking out some VMP exclusives and I see that the Hanni El Khatib "Flight" is on Red Glow in the dark vinyl. What are your experiences with Glow in the dark vinyl? Do they sound worse, is it similar to picture vinyl?

Nooooope. Way too much trouble. I enjoy partaking from time to time, I'm not a full-on stoner. Gives me flashbacks to my college buddies though. I don't know if there's a more annoying group of pot heads than engineering students.
Can confirm.
Mechanical, materials, electrical, computer. It was polytechnic university.
Started in electrical engineering but ran for the hills, the hills being theoretical math. Toking up with math people was always fun.
MacGyver pothead.

Has no one in here seen Half Baked??
There was one semester where all we watched was Half Baked. That was the semester that we convinced the RA to let us throw a kegger in the dorm. Good times.

Really hope the Los Amigos Invisibles exclusive hangs around for another two weeks as I’d really like to pick it up then! I’ve been splurging so much on vinyl I didn’t realise how much left I have in my bank account 🤪

Listened to the Los Amigos Invisibles “Arepa 3000” and it is such a fun listen! It’s very funky, old-school and nostalgic but still left field and quirky! I really dig it! 👌

Did you end up getting this record, @NathanRicaud? I'm just listening to it online and it sounds pretty good to me.

I have one Glow in the Dark record and it sounds pretty bad. It’s crackly throughout and the space between songs sounds like a fireplace. It’s the Black Pumas release from Newbury. I’m keeping because I like the gimmick and they put a cool little glow in the dark paint on the cover, too, but if you’re looking for sound quality, it might not be the best.

I have Rozi Plains “What A Boost” on glow in the dark vinyl and it sounds like shit unfortunately. So much surface noise

the only glow in the dark I have is the most recent Andrew Bird, which I haven't listened to in a long while, but I thought it sounded totally fine. maybe it's simply passable sounding when I was expecting it to sound much worse which made me think it sounds good.

I’d stay away from glow in the dark unless you’re just buying it as a collectors album...the few I have purchased in the past had lots of noise.

Lots of delays from VMP...

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - Just Coolin'

  • Shipping month changed from May to September
Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes - What Kinda Music

  • Expected ship date is currently TBD
Whitney Houston - Whitney Houston (Box Set)

  • Shipping month changed from May to July
Courtney Marie Andrews - Old Flowers

  • The street date has been moved from May 6th to July 24th. We expect this to ship in August.
David Gray - White Ladder

  • Expected to ship in May
NNAMDÏ - BRAT

  • The street date has been pushed, exact date TBD but estimating it will be within the June-July timeframe.

Makes it even funnier that they are sending some proceeds from Whitney to charity since it won't even ship until July now...
Weird, I didn't get the email about Art Blakey being delayed, but I did get the email about Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes being delayed....

Yes it is. FOMO itself is fine, how you choose to institute it are very different and can easily cross a line between acceptable and shady. They choose to institute FOMO with lies and deception, that’s not cool. The sad thing is, they don’t need to utilize those geurilla tactics, the product will sell with honesty the same as without.

The running theme here definitely seems to be more about deceit than just FOMO in general. Lying in order to create the fear that you'll miss something instead of just allowing the popularity of the product to do that work for you. In that sense, FOMO isn't the issue, honesty is. Do you think that's fair to say?

This all day. VMP flat out lies.

Every single month now, VMP labels all of its new ROTMs in its store as “sold out,” regardless of how many copies are available and will show up a few weeks later for sale in the store and/or swaps. The only reason for saying something is “sold out” for these brand new releases is to create a false impression that the demand has swallowed up the supply. There is zero truth in the statement that those releases have “sold out.” The ONLY way anyone would have been able to secure one of those “sold out” new ROTMs would be to be a member for that track when they were announced during the swap window for the month. And then they are labelled as “sold out” for the rest of the month. Then, the next month, when those records show up in the store, the impression for a new customer would be “oh damn, they must have found a few extra copies of this ‘sold out’ record so I better jump on this now!”

They say the anthologies are “sold out” instead of saying that they are no longer available due to the self-imposed purchasing window.

They also artificially manipulate available stock so that things “sell out” and then show up later as “swap exclusives” that only members will have access to.

When they hold back copies for replacements, they don’t tell people that they’re holding back copies for replacements. They don’t say that they’ll release them once they’ve ensured that everyone who has purchased a record has received it (without any issues that require a replacement). They just say there are no copies left of the record - which, again, is not true.

There is most definitely a way of doing business that doesn’t require you to lie to your customers. But VMP has discovered that lying helps them manipulate people into buying things they might have waited on.
