Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Didn't he jack it in because he thought VMP was moving away from the community centric model. Pretty sure I can remember him posting something to the effect of how he didnt want to go with them in the direction they're taking. But yeah. That was the turning point when it became less club and more sprawling goatfuck

He got sacked for having different opinions on the direction of the company. He didn't want to leave and was gutted for a good while. VMP was his baby.

I've actually developed a great relationship with my local during this pandemic and look forward to spending even more there in the future! They actually just reopened this week so I'm looking forward to maybe actually going inside instead of doing curbside pickups! Having this weight lifted off my chest not having to deal with all the issues that come with being a member of VMP is really going to make record collecting fun again! Just need to start listening more than buying, the backlog is getting out of hand!

Here's what my e-mail shows:

@Skalap I think I saw earlier you were wondering about international "bridge" discounts. Looks like this is it. So pretty much the same as the original prices for us, but likely just a one time deal then it goes up. So assuming they don't go out of business within a year (certainly possible) the best deal is the year rate which is pretty close to where it's always been.

We're all laughing at them being crap and probably going bust soon (myself included) but there are some good people working there and it'll be sad if they lose their jobs, doubly so in the current economic climate.

I totally agree. I wrote my first message here a few days ago to defend Storf because I think people give him a lot of shit and act like he's the one making all the decisions. (Despite the magazine articles, I wonder how much say he really has in the curation.) Now I'm here trashing a company that I think deserves to go under. I don't know Storf--maybe he is a jerk--but even still, it's hard not to feel bad for him and for Paulie. I'm sure they're underpaid but were happy to work in the industry and for a company they thought was pretty awesome. Now they must see the writing on the wall. Morale there cannot be good, and I feel bad for those kids.

hows record shopping post-covid? I haven't stepped in one since sometimes last year. Are shops now offering their catalogs online? Are stores near you open with distancing?

I've only been out once to my local that was closing, so it probably isn't a great reference. They were busier than they usually were pre-covid, but probably due to the 33% off everything.

I folded last month and fell for the $21 discount on renewal, even though I had promised myself I wouldn't endure the hassle with them after the shit show last fall. Well, after this 3 month run I'm out forever. Glad I'll (hopefully) get BVSC and Spiritualized at that discounted price, but nothing they possibly can offer can justify $50 plus custom and tax. Been a member since Gorillaz, was a good run up until last year.

The store I went to that was actually open (the others were still doing curbside) only let in 3 people at a time and you had to wear a mask! They had hand sanitizer at the door you had to use upon entry and everyone inside just did their thing and kept their distance. The other shop opened with 30 minute appointments but I haven't gone yet and my favorite store just opened this week! They are similar to the other open store... overall it's kind of weird but I feel right back into the groove and hardly noticed a difference.

Just before covid really kicked in my local started improving his webstore, and most/all vinyl was available online and could order for either in-store pickup or delivery. That I think really helped them survive covid where they were able to still function and from talking to him seems like they were at least able to break even and stay afloat. Contactless/curb-side delivery was allowed during covid (for quite a while), so I've made a few orders using that over the past couple months (a few Tone Poet titles among others, with prices much better than Amazon). Stores are open now (have been for a few weeks) but they are limiting the number of people in the store, masks are required and hand sanitizer is available when walking in. The big thing they're trying to prepare and figure out a strategy for is Record Store Day in August.

Looks like VMP has decided to email everyone regarding the price increase. My sub is up for renewal at the end of October and just got this:
Your membership is currently active under the old price. NO BILLING OR PRICING CHANGES WILL OCCUR FOR YOU NOW, and you'll continue to receive all the benefits of being a member. Once your term comes up for renewal (or cancellation), we will send you an email in the month prior reminding you of this change and extending any potential offers your way.
As usual with them, no committment on any sort of offer for my sub, possiblly nothing by then.

The Record Exchange, Vinyl Acres, and Rock and Roll Graveyard. All three are great in their own way.
Plus, great restaurants downtown, although our go-to is a restaurant called May's. It's a seafood house (literally, a house that looks like it's having a party) where you strap on the all-you-can eat poured onto the table. Then hit Cakes to Die For to get dessert...can't miss it because there's a hearse they park out front. Some nice little shops, a small book store I always try to support, nice pubs, etc. It's a great evening out, revolving around vinyl, of course.
