Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

@NathanRicaud's response to Dukey is something which resonates with me and my VMP purchases. I've mentioned it before, but the average cost of a record here in the UK is around the £20-£25 mark (as an example, the latest 2lp standard pressing of Nubya Garcia's album is £26, the coloured pressing being more). You then have postage on top of that (I rarely see any postage thats less than £4).

So looking at VMP, even with the add-on increasing to 33usd its around the average price of a record here in the UK (but with free postage). You obviously have the exclusivity aspect of it, plus the booklet (with Classics), and in some cases an AAA pressing. I honestly think that's worth 33usd/£25 if its a title that I want (like the Sonny Rollins for example). To put it into further context, a Tone Poet typically costs £33 (44usd) plus postage over here. Really isn't a cheap hobby :ROFLMAO:

Rubbish isn't it. Although I'd say it's not on account of VMP being particularly good here but the rest of the general UK market being shite.

As a fellow UK collector, I agree. The price increase still keeps it just below UK prices. If anything the pre-rise prices were ridiculously cheap! Still sad to be paying more, but it still works out a little cheaper and they’ll be exclusive presses for the most part.

Very much my stance as well. Before the hike it was cheap, and even better when they used to sell non-exclusive records and equipment. For the longest time I have been waiting for them to abolish the free international shipping, so this price hike is something I kind of expected at some point.

Lol Obviously no offense intended. Im talking strictly in terms of financial and family responsibilities getting heavier with age (for most), making unrestricted and non-budgeted travel a bit more difficult.

As I've gotten older my love of going out to bars, parties, concerts (anything really) has lessened significantly but I love traveling even more.

I have travelled way more as a "grown up" than I did in my early 20s. Yes, I have more responsibilities (kids, wife, career, mortgage, etc), but I also have more income now, vs. then when I was working a lower wage job and paying for university, rent, food and nights out.

And budgeting isn't a bad thing. I find it makes me spend "smarter". Last summer me, my wife, and 2 kids spent 6 weeks travelling in France in way better accommodations, and eating at way nicer restaurants, than when I spent a summer in Europe at 24. Plus it was awesome showing stuff to my kids. I learned so much seeing things through their point of view.

TL-DR: Travel throughout your life. You gain different perspectives, depending on where you're at in life.

Traveling when you're young is fun because you are immortal and have unlimited energy and you can do whatever the fuck you want with no repercussions.

Traveling when you're older is fun because you can afford to stay somewhere that's not terrifying, you can afford to eat the real good food, and you (hopefully) are mature enough to avoid making some of the mistakes you made when you were young and had your whole life in front of you, before you had your soul sucked out and all your dreams dashed.

Of course, travel throughout your life. Im in my mid-30s and I love traveling and I finally make the salary to go all out when I do (to an extent). And mine and my wifes favorite part of traveling is enjoying the food, which I couldnt afford to the extent I do until now.

But I don't have kids. Alot of people want that in life and that's awesome for you that you can afford to bring you and your family overseas and have a great time. Most people I know with them can't. And the ones who do it certainly restricts them from the nightlife and dining out at restaurants, especially the really expensive ones.
Overall It depends what you enjoy when you travel, and the experience could be very different in your 20s or your 30s.
Im not necessarily saying, someone won't enjoy traveling when he gets older. That's ridiculous. Just that I see no reason to not also do it in your 20s when you can because it's very different and you won't get that time back. You certainly won't regret it and you never know what the future is going to bring.

Agree 100%, I'm pretty much in the same boat.

Now about prices in the UK... I'm a UK collector, but originally from Italy and let me tell you vinyl in Italy is even more expensive. We don't have significant pressing plants so almost everything is an "import" so there are taxes to pay on top of the cost of the record. That Nubya Garcia you mentioned, £25 right? In Italy it's €40. I sent an "indie" variant to a friend down there, and I spent less money overall. Something super popular like say, Pink Floyd's The Wall - the recent remaster? €49. Absolutely mental. If I were in Italy my collection would be worth twice as much! 😅

For me the 32 $ for an add on is not the problem. Its the 50$ for the main sub that makes resubbing for stuff that interests me unfeasible. And i do not want to commit to more than 3 months

I’ll be honest with you I don’t agree, $33 is a lot for the types of records they often press. Added to the fact that they’re often single LPs, I don’t agree with @Selaws and the other uk member, I rarely pay over €25 for a single LP, it’s usually a double before I’m hitting the €30ish that is $33. Added to the fact that the 47% rise is steep and $50-52 to sub, nah, there is little value for me.

I think Freddie Gibbs Piñata might be in the Swaptions! It’s just appeared in store but is listed as “Waitlist Me, Please”! I missed out on Piñata so I’m really hoping I can grab it in the Swaptions if it does end up being there! 🤞👀👨‍💻💨🚨

The exchange rate is in favour right now so I guess as an international from the UK or Europe locking in for a year is like 35€ a record. I still believe with this as a budget you can get far better records this side of the Atlantic. On the flip side I took a look again at all 3 tracks from the last 12 months from those 36 records I would say I'd think twice about paying 35€ for any of those had I seen them elsewhere at that price.

The longest term I've ever done with VMP is 3 months and that's because I don't trust their curation to be consistent enough to match my tastes. At the new price we are looking at 42€ a record which I simply wouldn't be able to justify given the side subs are also more expensive now, their exclusives are only "exclusive variants" also available at most other retailers AND open to non-members.

I've personally never paid more than 27€ shipped for a tone poet (or more than 15€ for a BN80 shipped ), so if you're willing to wait there's always a way to get them for less. Using the same logic I'm willing to wait until VMP offers their inventory clear out sales and the 3 months for the price of 2 offers to get their records of the month. I simply don't buy into their FOMO or hype and as the last 12 months suggest, I'm hardly losing any sleep over not having those records in my collection.

For reference: I have White Stripes, Blakey, Mr. Hands and Flaming Lips from the last 12 months.

Breh, you played yourself the exact same way last month w/ the Whitney box. Stop torturing yourself! It won't be there! Sleep in!
