Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

$26? That’s not $31! What’s going on, are the business analysts on vacation?

Still like $8 more than retail from YT.

Ugh. Well that's unfortunate.

It is, and also a bit strange since YT is a UK label and all the releases I've seen from them were made in Europe, all with dedicated cuts. Wonder if this is a typo, or just shifting plants to produce a dedicated US run. That or the Euro plants are full up.

There's been some odd stuff happening with pressing plants recently. Joel Ross was pressed in Burlington Ontario at Precision Pressing who are an offshoot of GZ and generally suck. But why a US Bluenote artist was pressed in Canada is beyond me. The black version was also pressed there. And the new Verve Vital Vinyl Getz/Gilberto was also pressed at Precision except the orange variant was apparently pressed at GZ and not Precision... unless Discogs is wrong, which it might be. But either way, odd...

For sure the current state is this lol:

I think the only logical explanation is that the better plants are really full up. This probably really effects the newer stuff like FKA Twigs, which let's be honest was probably finished a little after Cellophane dropped. The label then tries to target a streaming release date they can get her to tour around (excited for her to come to my city!) and they can run the hype circus around, but not too much time so that it leaks too early. If they want to drop the record at the same date, they probably hit a wall with the lead times for the plants that actually care about QC, so they're stuck going to the plants who just press them to meet the rush job. I might imagine the hype and leak fear wouldn't effect the Joel Ross situation as much, but I could be wrong and it may well be the same deal.

I mean it still cost $5 to ship so it’s really only a $3 difference, and you’re getting a more limited variant.

I’m all for being hard on VMP when it’s deserved, but these bad faith attacks annoy the piss out of me.

Big Thief’s new record upcharge is crazy but I also believe it’s because 4AD charges more than some other labels, hence the increase. But also odd because UFOF was similar price point from 4AD and VMPs was $3 less than Two Hands.

What storf said:

I'd be surprised if Yusef makes it through the end of next week, Sturgill the end of the month. Decent amount of Angel left.
Translation: we sold a bunch of Yusef the first day, there are ~100 left that will sit around for awhile; Sturgill will make it to swaps but we'd rather you pay $32 than add a track for $23 and swap for it; no one is buying our $33 version of Angel Olsen

I don't really see how this is a defense of VMP. If VMP is shipping it with your box, shipping is free to them as well as you, so they are just pocketing the difference.

I couldn't care less about pressing number. No reason to upcharge 40% for it. If that's worth it to you, that's fine, but it's almost pure profit for them.

So my second Joel Ross is worse than the first copy, I gave up and took the credit. It's the worst package and pressing I've ever gotten from VMP. I advise against getting it if anyone is considering it.
Hey I mean Joe Harley (guy that does Tone Poet) claimed he has a clean black copy so maybe they do exist but both of my VMP copies are so terrible it's not worth continuing the search. Not to mention the cheapest gatefold possible combined with the cheapest sandpaper sleeves possible, I'll take my 33 bucks and get something else.

Some recommendation @Mather ! I hope they put this write up on the cover sticker

Lol, I really don't see how pointing out a price differential is a "bad faith attack", it's just a fact. The shipping defense is valid, but by that logic they should give you discounts for buying multiple items each month, since anyone who has shipped records knows it gets cheaper the more you add.

Do I think $8 is too much? No, I guess it's reasonable considering the shipping and customer service VMP provides is superior than most labels and they have a limited run copy they have to make money off of. I may end up ordering through them if it's an IRP pressing for the standard as it's easier to deal with VMP with pressing faults than most other retailers. That said their pricing up-charges are noticeable to a lot of us that buy a lot of records, and don't really think any increase in price is worthy of praise.

Hate to be that guy, but my Joel Ross is flat and actually sounds fine (*ducks*)
