Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Time for a bit of a moan im afraid.

So I have been working through the VMP Blue Note releases from a few years ago (Johnny Griffin - Blowin Session, Donald Byrd - Stepping Into Tomorrow, Eddie Gale - Getto Music, Charlie Rouse - Bossa Nova Bacchanal) and they are just superb. Really thick jackets with solid print (some are gatefold with crisp photos). Nice sounding presses at 45rpm. Decent vinyl with unique colours used (if thats your thing). Nice MOFI style inners. Overall superb quality and consistency.

Now today I have opened up the first of the new Prestige series from VMP (Eric Dolphy - Out There & Sonny Rollins - Saxophone Colossus). Admittedly I haven't listened to them yet, but unfortunately I find that the first thing I have to do nowadays is open them all up and check for warps. When compared with the Blue Notes the Prestiges (so far) have pretty standard jackets, with standard print quality, certainly nothing special. The records themselves seem good, the colours are more subtle than the Blue Notes (which I personally prefer). What I find annoying is the lack of consistency. The inner sleeve for the Eric Dolphy was a cheap paper inner (not lined) whilst the Sonny Rollins is a good MOFI style inner. The Eric Dolphy also came with the VMP hype sticker on the front (stating the title, colour, and 'Limited to 500') which I personally like to keep, but the Sonny Rollins doesnt have any sticker. So all in all the Blue Notes were certainly better quality-wise (ignoring audio, I will have to comment on that another time).

In all honesty I'm being overly picky here for sure, I just can't understand why they would adopt a certain level of finish for one record in the series over another. We have seen that they are able to produce a solid series as the Blue Note was top notch.

I 100% agree, and totally get your frustrations with their lack of consistency. While I am not one to make excuses for VMP, they (well, Storf as he's the only staff who communicates anymore) were fairly upfront that these were very different things. The BNs were true exclusives that VMP had remastered, while the Prestige titles are just colour variants of already existing remasters. The pricing reflects that, with the Prestige titles going for $27, while the BNs were $32 (and that was before VMP starting overpricing their records).

The different sleeves between Out There and Saxophone Colossus likely stems from them being pressed at different plants (Rainbo vs. RTI). The missing hype sticker on Saxophone Colossus is...probably poor communication between VMP and wherever they were packaged.

Both Yusef Lateef and The Hustler will be swaptions next week, right?

As always, I'll believe when I see them in Swaps, but I would think yes, along with other titles that are suppose to ship in October: Brittany Howard, Fania All-Stars, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, John Coltrane, The Halloween records, the Luaka Bop comp, et al.

Now, whether they actually ship on time or not, who the hell knows...

Actually if youre thinking of getting dolly you might want to act now, storf says there's only 4 of them left with a few of the country bundles

Definitely gonna grab Gorillaz in swaps and sell my black one to my sister. Gotta get them colored shits, ya know?

Storf says Tidal will be hitting swaps soon, so a repress must be in order. Might grab that when the time comes.

Are flaming lips exclusives confirmed or just speculation?

I foolishly signed back up to get Sampa, JPEG, and Danny... one of those didn’t drop and I ended up ordering Sampa from her Bandcamp. I’m on the fence about cancelling again or swapping Da Brat for Demon Days or the Soft Bulletin. An Embryonic sclusie would get me to hold off cancelling again until the next meh month

I have the clear and agree. I thought there was gonna be 2 LP with the stereo and mono mixes?

There is no other release that’s just 2LP on the market. They’d have had a proper exclusive if they’d got that. The special edition is 2LP and 2 SACD with both a mono and a stereo disc of each and a bonus 7” of the Honky Tonk Women single. I ordered that one over here...
