Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

So I finally removed 2 of the subs and just have essentials for now. I want to change that to classics but it says classics and rhh are sold out.

Have to admit it feels a little refreshing as others have mentioned. Now if I could just get myself to cancel my main and be done with it completely.

I mean, yes and no. Yes in the fact that a few scenes are blatant ripoffs of Lam's work. But no in the sense that it is pretty much a hallmark in all Tarantino films that he "borrows" heavily from other films and calls it "paying homage". I think if I took the stand that his appropriation of scenes and plot lines knocks points off, I'd pretty much have to discredit most of his films (Kill Bill via Lady Snowblood, etc etc.).

But I do love these discussions you start up @Dead C. They are always interesting and engaging. Do any of the Tarantino's other works lose points with you because of this? Sincerely curious.

I haven't watched a new Tarantino film in years, mostly because it drives my brother nuts and he knows that I have no other reason for it. Django, Hateful 8, Inglorious Basterds... I haven't seen any of them. I like Reservoir Dogs. I remember watching a show on PBS in the 90s that referenced it around the time of Pulp Fiction getting Sundance hype. It also showed Aronofsky and how, when he submitted Pi, it was rejected from the festival the first time around, but got in the following year. I twas documenting the indie film scene and got me interested in it.

I have nothing against Reservoir Dogs and I own it, but that's mostly because I believe that the dialogue is really the heart of what makes it great. The Lady Snowblood / Kill Bill thing is, however, a bit different to me, since it was pulling from a film that came out in 1973, unlike City On Fire which was from 1987. With Reservoir Dogs, he stole from what was basically a current film, at the time, and my guess is that it was while he was still working at a video store. I believe that he also denied seeing it at first, even if he later admitted to loving it. The shot for shot stuff is a little much. The fact that it was his first movie and he built a name off of it, makes it even trickier. Kill Bill was an undeniable tribute and the sheer fact that he cast Gordon Liu wins me over, not to mention the RZA soundtrack and Shogun Assassin clip - Liquid Swords is one of my all time favorite albums. There was no attempt to mask that at all. She was even wearing the Game Of Death Bruce Lee getup. I definitely don't hate Reservoir Dogs by any stretch -- if I don't watch it now, it's because I watched it so much in the past -- but my comment was more in regards to the rankings that people are giving his films and considering what affects the criteria they're going by. For me, personally, it might lose some points against something that I feel is more original and fully his vision.
