Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

I am intrigued by T-Pain and possibly ONE of the J-Lo exclusives.

I just wish there were more "oh SHIT this is a cool idea" (like the Rowland S. Howlett) or OOP exclusives coming our way. I have a wishlist of about 50 albums I would love to see get pressed or re-pressed, meanwhile it seems there's a pattern of pressing up high-profile stuff.

I dunno, just my $0.02.
I just wish the OOP stuff they’d do was ultimately something I’d actually WANT. T-Pain, J Lo, and Rowland do not interest me at all. Maybe repress Noname or Flight to Brazil since those seem to be highly desirable? Or if no represses of previous records then I guess some represses of Iowa and volume 3 by slipknot. I feel like those would get some numbers because those are highly desirable on discogs. Also would give them the chance to press something fucking metal since they haven’t had anything in that category since like 2018.

VMP doesn’t benefit much from repressing Flight To Brazil or Noname. Can’t stoke FOMO as much if every desirable release they have gets a repress. I also truly doubt they have the rights to repress those again.

it kinda seems like VMP is turning into a mix of Newbury Comics and UO now. Color variants of stuff that’s getting pressed at a bunch of other places (Rowland Howard, Thundercat, Horace Tapscott, etc) and really popular nostalgic exclusives like Mariah, JLo and TPain.

Like, I lost my job just on Monday, but I’m not worrying or am getting mad at the workplace for giving me no warning etc.
You got told on a Monday that your job was ending on that same day? That’s lousy - sorry to hear!

Yeah! Worst part was I was told after my shift to not come back, so I didn’t even have a chance to say bye and I left my Lonely Planet Indonesia book there as I read a bit during my lunch break 😭

I dunno, making a different colored variant might be a good compromise for things like Flight to Brazil. The original pressing will still be unique and have value while us poor sods who missed it get a chance to listen to the sweet tunes.

Why not make a different pressing then? Different colors or different master? Makes the old one still unique and allows people who want it to get it. Idk just my two cents

Because it’s expensive to do a different master and VMP doesn’t own any of the rights to these songs. They likely had a limited window to press these records as exclusives. I get that people want reissues of everything if you didn’t get to snag a copy the first time around but I think it still hurts businesses in the long run as nobody will rush to buy things because they know things will eventually get repressed. And with FOMO being one of VMP’s main sales tactics, their releases holding value (and increasing in value) is an easy way for them to stoke it. They even had a top 10 VMP resale value on discogs article awhile back.

All this combined with how saturated the market is with vinyl now makes it a pretty easy decision IMO for them to not repress things. Look at what Brainfeeder has been doing lately—5+ variants of every new album most of which are way cheaper to get after the fact because nobody buys them with too many options. You can get Flamagra for $8 on amazon. Limited variants that were $40-50 new can be had for $30 now.

I’d love for there to be tons of copies of the more rare albums VMP (and others have done) but there’s an inherent value for these companies not to press 5k+ copies of albums. Scarcity is valuable to these companies. It drives publicity and future demand. Look at Action Bronson and Alchemist who charged like $150 or whatever for the last pressing they did of Bronson’s stuff and it sold out immediately. They make like 100k in a day and don’t have to worry about logistics after that.

I actually prefer for them not to repress. Makes my collection a lot more valuable. And it does instill that FOMO, only because once it's gone it's gone forever. Buy now, instead of later down the road when it might have doubled in value... Multiple variants gives me time to buy, there's no FOMO.

They shouldn’t repress the exclusives, once they’re gone they’re gone. They should, however, keep more of the AoTMs in print because the swaptions are absolute dogshit right now and have been for months on end...

That's actually a great idea. Would you like it to be just essentials or all tracks?

Couldn't agree with ya more...I still have a 1 month sub but at this point, if all three ROTMs are a miss for me, there's pretty much nothing interesting left for me to swap. I also hate that things are marked "sold out" but then pop up magically for $34/$40 after swaps are closed...

I think the whole swaptions thing took a massive hit once they stopped selling standard releases through their store. I kind of like the fact that once the AOTM are sold they dont get a second pressing (and this is coming from someone who has all the Classics apart from 1....so annoying!) but I agree that they should press enough to see it through to the next couple of AOTM swaptions.

They wouldn’t even need to have all of them available all the time. There might be even more value to rotating the ones re-pressed to mix it up a bit. That and unsold exclusives would hugely improve it.

I disagree because I think that none of the AoTMs are even remotely limited editions anymore and so there is no inherent dilution by repressing. If they can’t sort out the swaps they really do need to add the month skip feature now that the 1 month option is dead!

That said my instinct is always firmly against artificial limitations or numbering or any of that sort of thing so maybe that’s just my take!

Which Classics are ya missing out of curiousity?

I'm torn because part of me likes that there are (or were) no represses of their ROTMs. Especially since they now let non-members buy things--it was one of the only benefits to being a member. But at the same time, I think that there's a bit of false scarcity going on with VMP and aftermarket sellers. Nobody knows how many copies they press of each record, but I have to assume it's around the 4K range if not more each month for each track (with RHH being a little less). That's still a lot of copies out there.

It would be nice to have more options for swaps but seems like they hold back from certain albums that are marked sold out for swaps and mysteriously pop up at the store for full non-member price later on.

I also kind of wish that previous ROTMs were available for member pricing in the store and the marked up prices for non-members. There seem to be less and less benefits to being a member these days.

I was so absolutely convinced my wife would really want that T-Pain insta-bought it.

I came home from work and told her how Epiphany was getting its first vinyl pressing and she responded, “Oh, that’s cool. I guess.”

😐

I’m sure you bought it for ‘your wife’ after all and you won’t give it a spin yourself at all 😉

I think the issue now is he’s compromised... whereas before I took his exhorting to buy sexy main stream pop as genuine ..now I just think paid advertising...subjectivity gone ..he’s sold out to the man !

So he should tfr his free life membership to me

I think I should be given freebies so I become compromised... whereas before Everyone took my complaining about poor service and witty put downs of a corporation as genuine ..now I just think paid misinformation, almost like a KGB funding of a pro democracy group... hypernormalisation...subjectivity and dependability gone ..he’s sold out to the man, or has he, who knows anymore? Just buy a sexy copy of J Lo’s album and enjoy a hidden crate digger gem like T-Pain! Buy (or don’t).

No such thing as bad publicity.

Unless you count the last few months.

But again, more free things for me. Preferably money. I give really good impartial five star reviews for money.

I miss the historic posts saved on the old forum sometimes...

There is a reason I really don’t like them and it’s a disillusionment that’s built up over time starting with storf, moving through ever weakening curation, heightening with the whole shitty anthology concept, peaking with the nuking of the forum and ending with their utter inability to do any form of logistics. All this amplified by an utter lack of humility or humanity.

The reason? I really fucking loved my first year with VMP. I loved the records, the product the community, the whole bundle. That’s why I’m so pissed off at them. If I hadn’t cared to begin with I’d be indifferent now.

I was never @NathanRicaud because I’m not like that but I definitely was enthused and I recommended them to so many people back then!

I don’t know if anyone has ever said this before but...

they hurt you Joe. They hurt you bad.
