Vinyl Me Please (store, exclusives, swaps, etc)

Who’s better? And I mean that genuinely. I’m looking for other options, too.

I’ve tried N&G’s albums, but I’ve enjoyed VMP’s selections much more in the last year.
I’ve looked for other records clubs and right now I’d say VMP is the best one out there. I enjoy a good percentage of their selections and still find plenty I could swap for I don’t like all 3 . With their recent blunders I think they could be in a bit of trouble if they had a bit of competition,
As far as curating my own collection, yes I also have hundreds of records that I just bought at stores , swap meets , eBay etc as well. I would assume most people on here don’t use VMP as their sole means of buying records, but some of my favorites have come from them.

The best option is this if you like curation and surprises.

Befriend someone on here. Send them records whenever you think you have something they would like. Put actual care into talking with them and seeing what they like. And they do the same.

No monthly commitment. You do it because you both want to.

Sometimes you get a package with something you are expecting, sometimes a nice little surprise. But the surprise is due to them really wanting to surprise you rather than posting some other sap’s record. This is the best thing that our community can offer.

Otherwise pick your own.

Better still do both. Win-win.
I don’t know I would feel so awkward if somebody spent that much time and attention sending me a record and I hated it. Do I pretend to like it so I don’t hurt their feelings? Or do I be honest and say thanks for the effort but I genuinely can’t stand this record you thought I would like and risk hurting their feelings. It seems like too much pressure . What if they hate the album I send, them go to to the forums saying what garbage taste I have?

@Rahawk2 I’m in the same boat. I have far too much relationship anxiety to have a personal curation thing going on right now. But to the folks that can sustain that, that does seem amazing.

VMP used to be 80% of my monthly purchases; it’s now more like 40%. It’s partially the ghosting and more frequent damaged goods, but it’s just the natural progression of collectors right? You get to know the quality labels; you accrue 10-15 artists of stuff you like and decide to dive deeper into their catalogue by yourself. I’d honestly still recommend VMP to someone’s who starting up a collection. Just warn them of the potential issues.

I'm staring at a stack of VMP exclusive purchases that I'm trying to decide if I keep them or put them in the PIF thread as they just don't get enough play. Since the forum closing, I definitely bought less from them. I think that's more because the FOMO hype machine is gone. A lot of these possible PIFs were Throwback Thursday purchases and exclusives they teased that I foolishly purchased. I've bought less music in the past year in general. But I still enjoy the monthly selections, especially Classics. Anthology is probably my favorite thing VMP does. The Blue Note one led me to spend more on Blue Note records and build up that collection which I listen to a lot more than VMP records. I wish VMP could get their shit together so everyone could enjoy them but so far, outside of a few issues, I've had good experiences and minimal issues. If I was having issues to the point of it being more aggreviation than enjoyment, I'd drop my subs and not look back.

What I’m talking about is informal. I send records to another user on here and vice versa with regularity. We do it when suits and don’t have any pressure attached as it is just two people trading (although by now we don’t keep count or even know what we trade for). We do it because it is a) fun b) stress free and c) because we want to. If it wasn’t any of those 3 things we wouldn’t bother. There is no impetus to do this as it just came about naturally but it has been very rewarding beyond the music aspect.

Lol I get anxiety picking a song for the jukebox. I can’t imagine sending and receiving albums from strangers .

I have an old friend who isn't a member that I do that with. We obviously know each other, but I've gotten some great stuff.

PIF them or sell them! I have been getting rid of stuff that I don't listen to as much anymore to make room for stuff I will listen to more and it's nice to do a cleanse every once in awhile.

Shit, my order page says I have two copies Phrenology and one Mr. Hands coming and it is supposed to say one Phrenology and one Aretha.
Mine only shows my main track (Aretha). Neither add-on for Phrenology and El-P are showing at all.

I mean, it's a goddam train wreck. The idea that what they've done over the last few months is there to eliminate problems doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

I have to wonder if it's a good thing or a bad thing that so many are being affected by this problem. Will it make it easier to address or more difficult?

The fact that there are people actively downvoting the reddit post and anyone confirming that they are experiencing issues boggles the mind.

Hopefully, this gets sorted.

Anybody get their membership completely fucked this month? Might want to check your account and make sure they didn't switch it on you. I don't know... maybe they've canceled your EL-P record and replaced it with N.E.R.D. or something.

Even if it was correct yesterday... it might be worth a look.

UPDATE:

I mean yes, of course this happened to me. All three were fine yesterday, now today I'm apparently getting Bitte Orca, Aretha and nothing for RHH... I expected it. Somehow I knew I'd end up with a copy of Bitte Orca despite how hard I've tried NOT to end up with a copy of Bitte Orca. Much like last month when I ordered zero copies of Mr Hands and still received two copies of Mr Hands.

I'd rather PIF them. I cleaned out some stuff last March so it's getting close to the time to do it again. It's a good reminder of how much money I waste because I give in to the FOMO demon. I've tried to be better and really only get records I like.

As someone that consistently missed a lot of the throwback Thursday drops, I can't help but be curious about what's in that stack.

I hear ya. My buddy just got a turntable so I pulled a fat stack of records to give over to him to start his collection. It was nice to give some stuff away especially as I am struggling for shelf space haha.

Middle Kids EP, Knox Fortune, Jay Som, Big Smoke. Some of those might've come up on a sale VMP did. The others were new releases from the last couple of years like Barrie, Moaning, Twin Sister. Things I probably shouldn't have bought and hasn't really stayed with me. I was going to relisten to them in the next week or so to see if I still want to keep them.

And literally as I'm typing this, all my tracks now show as blank and pending, and Roots has now appeared in my orders, still missing RHH. Account shows that RHH should have been charged on the 2nd which was my first indication that it was gunna be fucked, since all those tracks are supposed to be charged on the 1st. And Roots shows as being added today, which makes me think someone is trying to fix this, since I'm not sure how that track could have been added today when I'm already showing a copy of the accursed Bitte Orca in my orders for Essentials.
